Matthews, one of the oldest members of the Northfield Lodge No. 426 Free and Accepted Masons in Pittsford, died Wednesday, May 27, 1992, at Clifton Springs Hospital. He was 89. Born in Perinton, Mr. Matthews lived in Victor for most of his life. He worked as a carpenter for more than 70 years. He was formerly active in the Bushnell's Basin Volunteer Fire Department and belonged to Northfield Lodge for 65 years. "He was friendly," recalled lodge secretary Raymond Beardsley. "He was a rather shy, retiring man." Since 1988, Mr. Matthews and his wife, E. Margaret , resided in Shortsville. Mr. Matthews is survived by his wife; son Larry and daughter-in-law Shirley Matthews of Webster; sister Lillian M. Snyder of Victor; granddaughters Melanie and Lisa; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Services were held Sunday at the Harloff-Cotton Funeral Home in Victor. Mr. Matthews was buried at White Haven Memorial Park.
