Mooney Gift-Giving Trip Fatal Joseph V. Mooney, 71, a retired veteran employe of The Democrat & Chronicle, took Christmas gifts to his former fellow employes yesterday and the trip ended in his death. Mr. Mooney was injured fatally by an automobile at Clifford Ave, and Baycliff Dr. shortly before 5:30 p.m. Police said he died of a fractured skull. He was on his way home from The Democrat and Chronicle, crossing Clifford Ave., when struck by a car police said was driven by Joseph E. Jankowiak, 48, of 2910 Culver Rd., Irondequoit. Jankowiak was questioned by police and released. When Mr. Mooney was a youth he went to work for Sibley, Lindsay & Curr Company as errand boy. He was an elevator operator when he left there to work at The Democrat and Chronicle in a similar capacity. A few years later he transferred to the newspaper's bindery department. He later became foreman of the department, a post he held for many years before going to The Democrat and Chronicle multigraph department. Eventually he was appointed head of the department. He retired three years ago. Mr. Mooney was a member of St. Philip Neri Church, the Nocturnal Adoration Society, the Holy Name Society, the Knights of St. John, the Catholic Laymen's Retreat League and the Independent Order of Red Men. Surviving are his wife, Susan T., three daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Gardner, Mrs. Charles Oberst, and Miss Elizabeth Mooney; three sons, Raymond, Lawrence and Edward Mooney, and 13 grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted in C. F. Scheuerman Sons Funeral Home, 712 Main St. W., at a time to be announced later.
