The submittor has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. ************************************************************************ SMITH -- Charles B., passed away peacefully on June 8, 1998, following a 3 month long battle with complications of a stroke. Charles was 88 years of age at the time of his death, and is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Thelma J. Smith, and 8 grandchildren. Born in Rochester, NY, Charles came to San Diego as a young boy with his parents in 1922. A family home was constructed in Mission Hills in 1923 where he resided at his death. Charles was a Veteran of WWII, serving in the Pacific Theatre as a Master Sergeant in the US Army Air Corp. After the service he returned to San Diego Gas and Electric Co. where he retired in 1968 with 27 years of service, principly as a Right of Way Representative responsible for acquaring land rights for the companies facilities. Upon retirement Charles switched his past time interests from his ocean-going boat and fishing to RVing, and he and Thelma spent almost 3 decades enjoying travel by motorhome. He will be remembered as a student of the English language, and for his mastery of the spoken and written word. He will be missed by family and friends. Visitation Sat. June 13th 12 Noon to 5 pm Merkley-Mitchell Mortuary . Funeral Service held at 12 Noon Sun. June 14, Mission Hills United Methodist Church , 4044 Lark St., San Diego. In lieu of flowers family suggests contributions to San Diego Hospice.
