A description and history of the New York Marble Cemetery, Inc. and a list

http://www.chesapeake.net/~stovy/nymc/nymcmain.htm.  This 1830 cemetery,
located off of Second Avenue between Second Street and Third Street on lower
Manhattan, has no individual gravestones.  The aboveground rubble walls
surrounding the half-acre vault area hold plaques of Tuckahoe marble
engraved with the names of the early 19th century vault owners (who in some
cases are buried elsewhere) and the vault numbers.  The names of the persons
buried in the vaults are NOT inscribed.  The position of each plaque on the
wall indicates the location of each of the 156 underground vaults.  The
walls are deteriorating and many of the family plaques are fallen, broken,
and missing.  As a rule, the south wall plaques are in better shape than the
north wall ones.  About a dozen stones are in near-perfect condition.  A
survey was taken on 10 December 1998 by Anne W. Brown (awb@chesapeake.net).
It was known in advance what was probably engraved on each plaque, so some
plaques were 'read' that otherwise would have been illegible.  The stones
are listed here in numeric vault order, which is different from their
geographic arrangement. Slashes indicate separate lines of engraving.
Dashes indicate illegible portions of lines.
