Jessie F phoned she was at Plaza with her maid to meet the steamer early Saturday. Saturday Jan. 2, 1909 Paid Ice man $10.00 & milk man $10. Mrs Madden here. Eugene called. Sunday Jan. 3, 1909 Mass at 8. Father Burnett celebrated. Met Miss Isabel Taylor going to St Ignatius – introduced ourselves – she sat with us & said she should leave for Egypt Thursday. She was from Leroy N.Y. We sent our cards to her at the "West Minster: Bon Voyage" &c Fannie called with Frances Nott. Monday Jan. 4, 1909 Called at Lina's. Pianola man here to repair some thing. Expected to go to Alices but felt forlorn & took calomel in the evening. Carrie Delano phoned & Emma Edsall. Tuesday Jan. 5, 1909 I felt ill & stayed in bed until 3:30. Alices cheque came. I phoned Alice. Jessie F. phoned & Fannie too. Wednesday Jan. 6, 1909 Feast of the Epiphany. We did not go to church. Maren had sore throat & we would not leave her. R. called. Tom arranged at Berger's for $50. for me. Thursday Jan. 7, 1909 Very cold. Paid Brown $50.00 on acct. Gussie here. I urged her to dine Sunday & afterwards sent word not to come. Friday Jan. 8, 1909 Fannie went to Mass at 11. Mrs Read called in afternoon, we had tea. Tom (Gov) went with Capt Taylor to hear Admiral Evans lecture. Saturday Jan. 9, 1909 Home all day. Alice & Fannie phoned. Sunday Jan. 10, 1909 Overslept - too late for the Mass. We were very tired & did not wake up until seven oclock. Father Ritchie had 7 & 8 Mass. Mass at 11. I walked home with Lina & stopped to see Eugene, Donald. Aitkins, picture dealer here - would not buy West Point. Tom Jr home all day. Monday Jan. 11, 1909 Mrs Madden here. Fannie & I walked on the Riverside. Tuesday Jan. 12, 1909 Rain. Alice phoned. Fannie & I lunched with her. Fannie P. came too. Jessie F phoned & we called at Plaza to see Augusta & Lina. Jessie gave me pictures of her mother. I gave Leicht $40.00 on acct. Father Burnett called in the evening. Wednesday Jan. 13, 1909 Very cold. Snow. In the afternoon Mrs Ball & Mrs Renault called, we had tea. Tom Jr came in to see them. Thursday Jan. 14, 1909 Maren out. Alices 19th wedding anniversary. Read of Mr Le Gay's death Jan 10th in Paris. Monday Jan. 18, 1909 Very cold. Nienman baker called. I gave him $10.00 on account. Tom Jr dined out. Tuesday Jan. 19, 1909 Alice's cheque came. I phoned her. Mrs Lampher here. Mrs Ames called too & I saw her in the dining room. Wednesday Jan. 20, 1909 Paid Hartman $10.00 on account & Emma Edsall here for lunch. Thursday Jan. 21, 1909 Mrs Lampher here for luncheon, had seen Mrs Christian & heard Dr C. had resigned & would go to Flushing to live. Mr Lampher very ill, she returns Friday to Boston. Tom & Gov dined out & we had light dinner & Maren went to Brooklyn by 7 oclock. Tommy sent us some Japanese cups – tea pot &c &c Friday Jan. 22, 1909 Steinway sent for the old upright piano. We did not go to church – home all day. Phoned Plaza, they go to the Farm Saturday. Alice & Fannie at Lillias for Bridge. I phoned & then decided not to go in. Rain Saturday Jan. 23, 1909 Read of the Republic's accident – in evening paper. Home all day. Tommy home. Mr R. here at 9:30. Great fog. Kate D. phoned from Belmont, she goes Sunday to Aitken to remain until Thursday. Sunday Jan. 24, 1909 Cloudy. Fannie & I went to church at 10:30. Father R. preached. Lina at church & had been at early service. Murray Young walked home with us. Lina went by W.E. Ave. Tom Jr went out before lunch. Tom home all day. Alice phoned. Fannie & I went for a short walk & then to vespers. Sister V Clement & another sister there we walked to cor together. R. here at 9:30. Father R. had 7 & 8 Mass. Conversion of St Paul Monday Jan. 25, 1909 Lovely – warm. Fannie & I went to 10. Mass. Walked home with Lina & spend half an hour there. Bought white grapes for W.S.F. After lunch Fannie & I went to the Plaza - saw Jessie & she gave Fannie a picture of Jessie. Stopped at Alice's. She was starting for dancing school. Mrs Coleman called afterwards. Fannie & I called at Lillia's. Tom Jr home. Wrote C. Chambers about money in wrong envelope. Tuesday Jan. 26, 1909 Lovely. This morning I walked with Fannie to Mrs Burnetts, she left some magazines &c. I went to market – bought bottle hair tonic .75. After lunch we went to Mrs Coleman's & E ? & to vespers – then to Mrs Lyons. Eugene came in with tom while we were out, then had tea. Tom Jr out. Glasses came from Macy's .45. Letter cheque from Alice. Wednesday Jan. 27, 1909 Pleasant Fannie & I went to 7. A.M. Mass. Fr Ritchie celebrated. Paid Maren $20.00 wages 24th Dec to 24th Jan. Went to market & lunched with Lina, then to Riverside & met Fannie & we all walked. Tom came in for tea. Miss Bradley here sent cards to Mrs Sharp. Mrs Booth died. Thursday Jan. 28, 1909 Fannie & I had a walk. Mrs Carson here this afternoon. Steinway's man came to make arrangements about piano. Violet sent flowers. Friday Jan. 29, 1909 Snow. Fannie went to 10. Mass. Violet Ward here this afternoon. Tommy dined out & went to the theatre. Jessie Fanshawe phoned asked me to go there Monday. Tom went out after dinner. Snowing. Saturday Jan. 30, 1909 Stormy. Tom in court. Sunday Jan. 31, 1909 Very cold. Church 11. Walked home with Lina. Tom & Tom Jr dined out. Fannie & I alone. Maren out. Monday Feb. 1, 1909 Very cold. Tom went to court. I phoned Jessie I could not go there. It was so cold & to say Bon Voyage to the girls for me, they sail Wednesday. Phoned to Bakery not to send bread until ordered. Tom sent messenger for $10.00 of his money. Tuesday Feb. 2, 1909 Clear & cold. Tommy did not come home until nine. Alice's cheque & letter, Fannie wrote to her. Sent postal to Pianola co our subscription up Jan 27. After dinner Tom went to Club. Wednesday Feb. 3, 1909 Warmer – snow. I left Tom's umbrella to be repaired & paid .75 ct. Paid telephone bill $3.50 & Cohen for shirt waists powder & handkerchiefs $4:50 Pianola called for music. Subscription up Jan 26, 1909. Tommy gave me $10.00 he borrowed. I phoned Alice. Ben home. Fannie Perkins phoned me & Lina phoned. C. Chambers sent her credit church money ?tion of to me. Wrote Pauline Hamilton. Thursday Feb. 4, 1909 Tommy cooked the chicken great success. Tom home about 8. Friday Feb. 5, 1909 Cloudy. Tom's eye troubled him, he saw Dr Johnson who gave him drops to put in. We did not go to Mass. Alice phoned – all well. We stopped at Linas. Emma came in & I went to join Fannie at the church. R. did not come. Fannie cashed a check at bank $2.50. Tommy's friend Kate D. & Virginia here this afternoon while we were at dinner. She left a blouse for me for model. Saturday Feb. 6, 1909 Windy. Tom's eye much better. He staid in all day until just before dinner. Tom Jr home all day. I wrote R. if he would call I would give him $10. on account. Read Lewis Rand. Lina phoned Donald had position through D Travers, $35 per week. Sunday Feb. 7, 1909 Clear. Cold. Mass at 11. Father R. preached but could not finished & "asked congregation to ex. him, he was not well" & left the pulpit. Mr Young walked home with Fannie. Mrs Tyler with me. Tommy came in after lunch with "Ju Ju" & left about 4. Tom's Birthday Monday Feb. 8, 1909 Clear. Kate Dinsmore phoned she hurt tendon in her leg & was in bed for several days. Eugene gave Tom a box segars – we dined alone. Tom Jr out & not home until late. Mr C here for an envelope - $20.00 leaving a balance $20.00 owing him. Fannie & I expect to go to the 7. Mass to morrow. Mrs Madden here. Dr B?n??? wrote Tom Jr & sent him $20 he owed him. Tuesday Feb. 9, 1909 We overslept & missed the Mass – the clock struck 7. instead of 6:. Alice called me up she was vexed that I had not been there "I would be sorry some day &c Fannie lunched nearly every day with her &c &c" Jessie Fanshawe phoned – she will lunch next week with me. Alices & Fannies check came. I phoned Lina who has been ill. Mr Gebhard phoned Tommy. Snowing hard 9:P.M. Rain early – warmer, cold wave coming Wednesday Feb. 10, 1909 Cashed the cheques $25. & $18.00 Maren paid Leicht $25.00 – leaving a balance of $30.00. Tommy went down town & the Gov with him. Alice phoned. Fannie went to Miss Bradley's. Tommy had pain in sciatic nerve. I wrapped Anti phogeshian (?) on it. Fannie phoned Kate. F.F. Thursday Feb. 11, 1909 Went to Linas in the morning. She had face ache. Dr Lyle there at 4. & Lina phone me he had given her tonic. Father Ritchie called we had tea. Tom home for dinner. Tommy came in the evening – very lame – his leg pained. Fine Friday Feb. 12, 1909 I called Dr Johnson he said Tommy had sciatica – gave him Lithia tablets & two capsules every 3 hours – the pain was greatly relieved. At 2 oclock he came into music room. Mrs Wilson called to say she was going to St Mary's. Tommy much better this evening. Linda called she is staying with Neary Francis. Lina phoned & Fannie Perkins. Saturday Feb. 13, 1909 Clear. Tommy had comfortable night until 4:A.M. I put on Anti ? at 7:30 & he was better & remained in bed all day. Sunday Feb. 14, 1909 Home all day – Tommy came into the parlor & was up all day. Maren out. Monday Feb. 15, 1909 Rained in early morning. I went with Lina to the dentist at 12. She was there nearly two hours. Tommy went out before dinner, came home late. I read aloud to Fannie. Carrie Ward called. Tuesday Feb. 16, 1909 Rain & stormy. Mrs Burnett here this morning. Kate phoned about the new Belnord. I sent her address. Tom went out after lunch. Godfrey the janitor left to day. Alice phoned she has been ill with severe cold. Wednesday Feb. 17, 1909 Lovely. Jessie & Julia Fanshawe here this morning. Julia brought fresh eggs from farm, they had a valise from Will – clothes for Tom. Fannie & I went to Alice's at 2. P.M. found her out & Annie Lawrence there. Afterwards we went to Carrie Delano's we left there at 5:30 & when we arrived Tom was alarmed – we were so late, he phoned all over for us! Paid ice man $5.00. & Fitzheau $15.00. Thursday Feb. 18, 1909 Mrs Burnett called. Friday Feb. 19, 1909 Mass at 10. Fannie went home. I stopped at Lina's to see Schatz & Billy, they had gone to Wmstown. Fannie embroidered. I read. Tom Jr dined out & Tom came home after dinner. Fannie & I went to bed early. Fannie received at 10. Wrote Fannie Perkins & Alice. Saturday Feb. 20, 1909 Lovely day. Very high wind last night. Fannie & I went to the church at 2:30 then home. Tommy in all day. Letter from Julia Munroe. Alice phoned. I wrote & sent her bill for pianola music. Sunday Feb. 21, 1909 Clear. Fannie & I went at 8 oclock Mass. Corporate Communion of the Guild at 11 oclock. Donald met us at the church & we went to Lina's – she was not well & could not go out. Letter from Julia Munroe. Anita called this afternoon. Fannie & I alone for dinner. Monday Feb. 22, 1909 Clear. I wrote Jessie to say I could not lunch there to morrow. I am afraid of the cold & should take calomel. Alice phoned good bye goes with Ben to Cobalt to night. Tom called at Violet's. Carrie came in here. Alice left with Ben at 8:30 for Coburg Mines. She phoned "good bye". Fannie P. phoned she would subscribe for books. Maren went to Brooklyn. Rain Tuesday Feb. 23, 1909 Letter & check $70 from Alice – 2 weeks - $20 for a year's subscription for music for pianola. Mrs Eckerson called in the rain. Tom came in for tea. Tommy dined out. Jessie sent tulips from Thorley. I took calomel & went to bed early. Eugene here this after noon. Ash Wednesday Wednesday Feb. 24, 1909 Pouring rain. I did not get up until noon. Jessie phoned they are going to the country for good Friday. Eolian Co sent 4 rebate rolls music. Fannie Perkins phoned she has a cold. Tom & Tom Jr home for dinner – gave Jr dose castor oil. Thursday Feb. 25, 1909 Cold. Paid Brown's boy $40.00 on account. Fannie went to Mass 10. Tom Jr in bed until noon. Jessie here this morning she had seen Peggy Drum & found her about the same. Jessie brought me corsets. They go to the farm to morrow. Violet sent flowers to Fannie. Jessie sent me lovely tulips last Tuesday & they are still in bloom. Friday Feb. 26, 1909 Fannie went to 10 Mass. We were home all day. Saturday Feb. 27, 1909 Fannie & I went out for a walk, cold & raw. We went to Vespers. Sunday Feb. 28, 1909 No church to day. I was in bed – trouble with my side. Fannie Perkins here in the afternoon. Howard came & she went in there for dinner. Tom Jr came home after dinner. Maren went to Brooklyn. She was very nervous. Miss Sherson phoned over Maren must have a rest, she would come back Monday. Monday March 1, 1909 Maren quite ill this morning – very nervous & crying. Dr Johnson said she had dementia & must go away. I phoned for Miss Iverson who came & took Maren to Brooklyn. Mrs Lampher here. Tommy cooked dinner. Fannie had severe headache. Alice expected to night from Cobalt?. Tom gave Maren $26.00 paid in full. Tuesday March 2, 1909 Showers. Alice phoned this morning. She had a lovely trip. Fannie P. was with her. Jessie came in this afternoon. They are in town over night. Will went to dinner with Mr Fiske. Mrs Madden's son phoned she was out of town until Monday. Nothing from Maren. Fannie & I cooked the dinner. Wednesday March 3, 1909 Pleasant. Alice phoned to know how we were managing without a maid. Fannie Perkins will send me an oil cloth for kitchen. Tommy sold West Point $200 for a certain purpose & we sent it away. Lina's birthday. I called her up. She was miserable. Letter from Will saying they intended move the bodies from Woodlawn to Shrewsbury. Tom took the letter to Express. I wrote Will. Fannie P. phoned & Alice. Thursday March 4, 1909 Small blizzard. Harriet a wash woman here to day. Painter did over kitchen ? & toilet. Letter from Pauline Hamilton. Tom and Tom Jr dined out. Fannie & I had dinner together very simple. Man here to repair pianola. Stormed all day. Friday March 5, 1909 Home all day. Man came for Maren's trunk. Maid from 202 came to do the work. I may take her. Saturday March 6, 1909 Home all day. Notice to call at State Lunacy Dept about Maren. Janitor cleaned rugs, kitchen & maid's room. Tommy went to W.H. on business. Alice phoned & Fannie. Gas range repaired. Fannie posted letter to Father R. Steinway phoned Mr Townsend would call Monday. Gave Tom $18.00 I owed him. Letter & check from Fannie Perkins. Sunday March 7,1909 Home all day. No maid here. Lina telephoned. Monday March 8, 1909 Tom met Pastor & Miss Ivarson at the office of the State Lunacy Dept. They said Maren became violent & was at Flatbush Asylum. They are afraid they will deport her. Maggie from (202) came here with her cousin Nellie whom we have engaged. She will come Tuesday at $20.00. Linda Larned here – goes to Syracuse Thursday. Alice phoned. Will sent bacon &c &c to me. Check from Alice $35.00. Vespers this afternoon. I bought bottle Danderine 80cts. Tuesday March 9, 1909 Pouring. Fannie went to Mass at 10. I wrote Alice about Nellie (maid). Towels and dinner napkins from Alice. I paid Leicht $20. F.F. Wednesday March 10, 1909 Harriet – laundress here this morning but did not stay weather so bad. Phoned Macy about delay in sending sheets & cases. Postal from Tom & letter. Wrote him to day. Alice phoned from Fannie Perkins. Lovely day. Thursday March 11, 1909 1 sheets & cases from Macy's $5.05. Tom has a bad cold & went to bed this afternoon. Fannie in bed. Wrote Tom Jr & sent postal from Europe. Tom has a bad cold & went to bed early this afternoon. Fannie P. phoned she dines with Mrs Crosby in Washington Square. Friday March 12, 1909 Cold & clear. Tom in bed. Cold better. Postal from West Fr (?). Violet Ward came in for tea. Men brought linoleum. Rain Saturday March 13, 1909 Tom much better but in bed. Gave him Solol & phenesetrine. Fannie P. phoned. Lanoleum (sic) down in kitchen. Harriet laundress here. Carpet sweeper delivered. Violet here for 4 oclock tea. Sunday March 14, 1909 Cloudy. Fannie went to 10:30 Litany & Mass. Tom up at breakfast – read in dining room. I gave Nellie $5.00 from T.M.F. Jr's money & she went out this afternoon for two hours. Tom went to bed early in the afternoon. Letter to Tom. Monday March 15, 1909 Cold. Fannie went to Mass at 10.A.M. I went to Segar store for Tom. Harriet here. I went out for errands. Fannie went to Vespers. Tom at dinner with us. I mailed postals & paper from Dr Brown to Tommy. Paid $10. to Clover Dairy. Phoned Lina. Alice phoned me. [Transcriber's note: There was a Brown Co Imperial Segar Factory NY late last century. Therefore, the spelling of cigar as segar seems to be accepted.] Tuesday March 16, 1909 Clear. Mass at 10. After Fannie & I went to Lina's, she expected Schatz & Susan. We were there until 12 oclock. Violet sent me some smoked white fish. Vesper's at 4. Tom quite well – home early. Left striped black & white waist to be dyed black. Alice's check. Wednesday March 17, 1909 Fine day. I went to the Bank. Cashed check paid Brown $20.00. A trunk from Jessie Fanshawe – black dresses & hats. Letter from Tommy. Nellie went out – after 7 her Aunt phoned she was ill & would not be back for several days. Maggie came in & will see her Friday. Thursday March 18, 1909 I went to Kilsey(?) . Sent registered letter to Tommy $25. Eugene here about the Woodlawn papers for W.S.F. Jessie Fanshawe phoned in the morning. I called up Alice. No servant. Fannie & I do the work. Friday March 19, 1909 Schatz phoned for me to send Dr Johnson to Lina who had a dizzy turn & could not go. Lyle Johnson went & ordered a nurse for Lina. Evening Kate D phoned she sails in three weeks. No servant. Saturday March 20, 1909 No servant. Fannie's cold better. Fannie P phoned. Alice has to have linen steamer she had not heard of Lina's illness she phoned Fannie P (?) who had gone to railway station with Schatz. Receipt from Tom Jr for $25.00. No servant. Sunday March 21, 1909 We did not go out to day. Fannie's cold much better, but she thought best to stay in. I wrote Julie Munroe last evening. Tom posted letter. Eugene here. Lina much better, has a nurse. Monday March 22, 1909 Wrote Tom Jr. – enclosed letter. Later wrote again. Letter tonight from Tom – this his 3rd week. Miss Bradley came in about 5:35 & staid until 8 oclock then Fannie & I had pudding. Mary (Maggie's friend) came to say she could not come – perhaps – but would try & phone. Tuesday March 23, 1909 Alice's birthday I phoned & congratulated her. Letter & check 25.00. Paid ice man $5.00 & Brown $20.00. Mary phoned she could not come. I called up employment office & they will notify me. Man nailed linoleum down. Lina better. Wednesday March 24, 1909 Lovely day. Telegram from Tommy – nothing will be published. Fannie P. phoned she has ill with cold in her eyes & quite hoarse. Nellie came this afternoon & is much better. I sent letter to Brass & Hearth about refrigerator pipe. Violet here. New music for pianola. Thursday March 25, 1909 Pouring rain. I wrote Tommy & sent plans of new apartment. Emma Edsall here in Nathatns? auto car. Friday March 26, 1909 Snow clearing. Laundress here. Awnings put up. Paid $1.25. Miss Bradley phoned. Letter to Tommy to night. Tom went early to Club. Saturday March 27, 1909 Fannie saw Lina. Found her better. Carrie D. here at 11 & stayed until nearly 6. Gussie here for tea. Bed early. Wrote Tom Jr. Sunday March 28, 1909 Pleasant. Church at 10:30 & Vespers. Fannie & I went to the Drive before Vespers. Monday March 29, 1909 Cold & raw – after Mass we went to Kelcey's. I tried on my black waist & Fannie had black skirt & jacket fitted. Madame Schiller caller this afternoon. Wrote Tom. Eugene here this evening, Fannie & I alone & we had a nice visit. Anniversary WSF & Jessies wedding Tuesday March 30, 1909 Mass at 10. Father R celebrated we talked with Bertha S? - & afterwards went to ? & then paid Lohrman bought some Easter cards & wrote Jessie – Alice's check cashed. Wednesday March 31, 1909 We received at 7: A.M. F. R. I bought waffle iron & various things. Saw Lillias – gave her Benzorine (?) & little box for her birthday. Vespers at 5 - & in the evening we went – Murray Y – came to door with us. Thursday April 1, 1909 Nellie out. Mass at 10. Afterwards I went to market. Fannie P phoned she was in bed with cold. Letter from Schatz – hopes Lina will keep her nurse another week. Finished "Wild Geese" Stanley Weyman. Friday April 2, 1909 Mass at 10. I went to market. Alice phoned for us to go with her in her car at 3 P.M. We went to Van Cortlandt Park & about twenty miles home & then to Vespers. Mrs Reynault & Mrs Barr & Mr Ames walked to corner, it sprinkled & we hurried home. I phoned Lina, she is better & sat half an hour on Riverside. Tom not home for dinner. Saturday April 3, 1909 Mass at 10. It poured this afternoon. Fannie went to church. Tom dined down town. Fannie & I home alone. Sunday April 4, 1909 Palm Sunday. Mass at 8. Wednesday April 7, 1909 Warm. Could not go out. Alice's cheque & I wrote thanks. Tom paid Nienkaus $14.00 on acct. Mailed 3 letters to Tommy. foreign. Thursday April 8, 1909 Home all day. Calomel.
