Papa & Tom home. Tom mended black tea table. I went to 11 o'clock mass sat in the back of St Ignatius. Mrs Shirley spoke to me. Tom at the Hogans for 7 o'clock tea, the Frank Gould's there. Mrs Renaud called in the evening with "Dewey". Monday January 2 Phoned Mrs Lampher. I wrote Jessie & Billy to come Wed. Uncle Eugene here. Rain & mist. We three dined together. Tuesday January 3 Jessie telephoned just home from Silver Brook Farm. Rained all day. Expected Mrs Lampher from Pelham. Alice L. she would not be up (phoned). Tom & I lunched together. I wrote notes. We three dined together. Wednesday January 4 Lilias gave our order at Armidon market. Alice telephoned she would come if not to slippery for motor. Aunt Lina phoned she would not come till Thursday. Mrs Renaud phoned to ask me to ride in her motor. Did not go. Joe phoned Tom. Uncle Willie phoned. Billy, he & Jessie lunched. Mrs Lampher here. Father Ritchie. Julia Nott. Miss Smalley. Alice Lawrence. Told Julia about Woodlawn. Mrs Hogan & Miss Shackleford. Miss Bradley. We 3 dined together. Jessie brought gown & two waists from Julia White & violet pin, also beautiful black gown of Jessie's. Wrote Julia & thanked her. Thursday January 5 Alice Lawrence phoned she would not be here today. Aunt Lina & Miss Sherman came. Aunt Lina brought jonquils. I walked with them. Tom & I lunched together, he stayed in & wrote. Papa home for tea. Mrs Johnson called. Wrote Jessie about Woodlawn – thanked her for gown, etc. We 3 dined together. Jessie phoned she had arranged every thing for Woodlawn. Uncle Willie spoke to me over the phone. Tom & I together. Wrote Mrs Lyon in answer to her letter for new years eve. Friday January 6 Epiphany. Went to 7 o'clock mass in time for the Litany. Breakfasted with Tom & Papa. Left note for Fr Ritchie about Wednesday Jan 11th. Left jonquils & letter for Mrs Lyons with her maid. Tom in motor with C. Miss Stack phoned she was coming to town Wed or Thursday & would come to the apartment even if we were all out etc. Aunt Lina phone that Peggy Dunn passed away yesterday at 10'clock P.M. & Mary Shanley to day at 3 o'clock this morning. Alice here, Benny home from Canada. Saturday January 7 Jessie phoned she had just come from Peggy's funeral. They go to the Farm today. Mrs Renault called up about her car for Wednesday & sent a box of pink roses. Augusta Childs phoned, I told her I was going out. Posted notes, went to church, & took 4 roses to Mrs Lyon. Her maid said she was better. Went to Vespers. Alice L called me up I was out. T.M.F. Jr's suit dyed well & arrived this afternoon. Miss Bradley talked with me at the door outside. We three dined together. Sunday January 8 Mild Windy Received at 7 o'clock. Went to 11 o'clock mass, waited outside for Aunt Lina & Miss Sherman. Uncle Eugene met her. Alice here in the afternoon. Mrs Renaud took afternoon tea. We three dined together. Anna out. Monday January 9 Very windy Note from Fr Ritchie. He will go in the car with us Wednesday. I wrote Jessie so to the Plaza. The piano is to go this morning at 10 o'clock no. 24068 Wheelock N.Y. The Price of Pilsens selections is in the Pianola – as Mama left it not quite played through she played several rolls & then left this one unfinished. 4 men took piano this morning. Tom & I lunched together. Gertrude Willis phoned her mother was doing well. Alice phone, going to Columbia. Julia Nott phone - she would not be here today. Aunt Fannie not feeling quite as well. Papa home for tea. We three dined together. Mama last played the pianola Friday afternoon Dec 2nd 1910. Tuesday January 10 Clear & cold Julia Nott here. Jessie Julia W. & Billy lunched here. Tom home but did not lunch with us, attended to things for me. Miss Ethel Robinson called. Aunt Lina & Miss Sherman. I went to Savages florist – walked there with Aunt Lina. Alice Lawrence phoned to her mother here. Alice called her up as soon as she arrived. Papa signed paper & took it to Uncle Eugene to sign. We 3 dined alone. Julia Nott asked us all to dine there as soon as we could. Wednesday January 11 Cloudy Left note for Fr. Ritchie telling him we would call for him & asking him to come back with us. He did not. Jessie came for us in their large car about 10.30 & we stopped for Fr Ritchie & arrived at Woodlawn where all was prepared fragrant greens like bits of Christmas trees. Tom placed some pink roses & pink carnations & over the greens Jessie placed crimson roses – carnations & lovely flowers. The prayers were beautiful. We drove home together & we 3 lunched alone. Damp Thursday January 12 Went to see Aunt Lina & Uncle Eugene. Alice telephoned & said she would order cards & envelopes with black edge Papa's & mine. Marie Platt telephoned & arrived at 1:30. Stayed until nearly 4 o'clock. Tom helped me with lunch etc. Papa had late lunch & his tea in drawing room talking to Marie. Anna out from ten in the morning until 10 before 12 P.M. We three dined together. Mrs Dickey called told of her Mother's illness since Oct – Mme Schiller so dear to me. Lovely letter from Miss Fanshawe. Jessie phoned from Uncle Willie's office 620 or so. Papa out this evening. Tom home. Alice phoned 2nd time saying she would not come as I was not alone. Anna at Morristown. Friday January 13 Raining Went to 10 o'clock Mass. Mrs Renault here. Alice phoned. Augusta phoned. Looked through boxes etc for letter. Did not find any. Alice phoned I told her of doylies Grandma embroidered & Mama had in her bureau drawer that I would give them to her. I thought Mama would like her to have them. Papa phoned. He was home for tea. Augusta took tea. We three dined together. Papa received a letter from C.C. Coleman wishing us a Prosperous New Year! Letter to me from the Misses Fanshawe sympathy. Tom out for walk of a few minutes. I read aloud to Papa. Mostly make-believe ordered by Mama from the library! Saturday January 14 Rain. Tom & I lunched together early. I went to Kelsey to have my mourning things done. Alice called & took the doilies. I was out. I asked Fr Burnett to have prayers for Mama Monday the 16th. Fr Ritchie will especially remember her at the 7 o'clock Mass tomorrow the 15th just 4 weeks since she left us! Miss Bradley here for tea. Papa phoned from the club. He lunched with Mr Galoway. Aunt Lina phoned. She had a dizzy turn this morning. Lovely letter early from Jessie. She & Uncle Willie had received Tom's letter & my two letters. Tom sent pen holder to W.S.F. We 3 dined alone. Met Cora had a little chat with her this morning. Alice phoned "so as not to let the day go by". Letter from Mrs Haltram (?) from Cal. 9:30 both Toms in their rooms. Sunday January 15 Clear but gray. Went to 7 o'clock Mass Fr Ritchie remembered Mama. I went to 11 o'clock mass sat back . Tom home & Papa, we 3 were home for lunch. Alice phoned me she felt better her headache gone. Aunt Fannie brighter she said. Cora here for tea, Marie & Polly Platt. Winds strong. We three dined together early to bed. Monday January 16 High winds. Very cold. Father Burnett said a Requiem Mass for Mama in the chapel at 7 o'clock. Mrs Krebs knelt beside me. We three breakfasted together. Alice (sent note) phoned she was going to do an errand for Aunt Fannie who was brighter this morning & could not come up. I answered notes. Set up a frame at Miss Bradley's. Brought home red stole to do, simple. Papa came home had tea etc about 2 o'clock. Tom came home both in their rooms. Tuesday January 17 Clear & cold. Kalendar Augusta brought. Jessie phoned we could not go to Woodlawn in her motor & she had not ordered the large one in time. Cora phoned first asking me to go out with her in her car but I expected to go to Woodlawn. Augusta phoned & came to lunch met Marion here. Alice phoned her car broke down & she would not come. Tom home & talked with Uncle Eugene who called here. I saw Schatz, Miss Evans, Emma at Aunt Lina's this afternoon. Aunt Lina gave me some carnations (red) I took five to Mrs Lyons. The nurse said she was getting on etc. Found Tom home. Papa took tea with Eva Thomson, little Eva played the harp & sang to him very sweetly. We 3 dined alone. Jessie sent me an ancient Hymn to a dying Christian beautiful. Andrea Del Sarto picture. Wednesday January 18 Bright – cold Aunt Lina & Schatz here just after parlor was arranged, & Tom & I had finished lunch. I went home with Aunt Lina & Schatz – walked with Aunt Lina & Miss Sherman on the drive, & brought home magazines arranged black pieces. Tom ill in the evening in bed terrible pain. Papa went out when Tom was feeling better. Thursday January 19 Bright cold Schatz phoned her mother dizzy. I went there. Schatz lunched with me. Cora took me for a drive in her motor. Saw Mrs Ames & Mories. Had tea Arrow Head Inn. Alice came while I was out. Mrs Frank Lawrence & Emily Procter. Cora sent me a lovely primrose in gilt basket. Alice came back & had tea. Mrs Shirley called. We three dined together. Julia Nott called me up while I was at Aunt Lina's in the morning. Friday January 20 Bright Alice sent mourning cards & envelopes telephoned she would not be up. I was packing away things in the store room. Cora & her mother here for tea. We three dined alone. Saturday January 21 Rainy Aunt Fannie's note saying she was better also her enclosure. I wrote & thanked her. Alice phoned & came here about 12 o'clock. She & Tom talked in the dining room. I dressed & saw her. Tom Hamilton here. Miss Stack arrived. Miss Bradley here calling. Miss Stack made the 4th at dinner. Sunday January 22 Snow on the ground. Miss Stack went to late Mass at St Gregory The Great's West 89th St. We 4 home for lunch. Anne's afternoon out. Papa home. Miss S & Tom took a walk. We 4 dined & went to bed early. Aunt Lina phoned in the afternoon. She had not been out. Monday January 23 Bright & cold Alice's letter. Went to the Bank. Wrote Kelsey. Aunt Lina & Miss Sherman here. Aunt Lina phoned later would I go out? I was too busy searching for things for Miss Stack. They were found. Miss Barretto called. Alice came. Mrs Johnson called so sorry I had to miss seeing her. Edith Arnold came later brought a beautiful pink rose & greens. Alice & I were just finishing our talk together in the dining room. Jessie phoned she & Billy would come up for lunch Tuesday. Miss Stack & we three dined together. Tuesday January 24 Bright Alice phoned she would come up this afternoon. Sister Virginia C. phoned she would be here Thursday about 11 o'clock. Jessie & Billy here for lunch. Billy & I talked & Jessie & Tom. Afterwards Miss Stack read The Golden Silence by the Williamsons. Alice phoned some thing about the ignito of her motor she can't come this afternoon. Miss Stack & I walked to 89th St & back. Tom home for tea. We 4 dined together. Wednesday January 25 Clear Miss Stack went home 12 o'clock train. Papa took her to the 42nd St Station. Tom & I changed the music room furniture – arranging the divan in the corner. Tom's idea & he moved it. I wrote to Marie M & sent some cards. Emma Jerome here. Alice phoned. She afterwards sent lovely gift A.M. Papa home for tea. I went to Vespers Conv. St Paul. Julia Nott telephoned sweet of her. I wrote & thanked Alice. We 3 dined together. Papa went to meeting at the Club to vote for govs. Tom read & I sewed. Thursday January 26 Rainy Tom answered Alice L's phone message. I unpacked Tom's divan cover & did up his fox etc skins in the trunk in the store room. Sister Virginia Clement came we had a lovely visit, she saw Tom & thought he looked so well. Tom & I lunched together. Anna's afternoon out. Papa phoned from the Club he would be home about 4. We had tea & laid down on the divan. Alice Lawrence phoned she would not be up. Tom & I had tea together in the music room. We 3 dined together. Patsey wrote Tom she was called on a case (yesterday). Friday January 27 Light Rain Papa went with me to 10 o'clock Mass & afterwards left me at Kelsey's. Joe here. Tom home. Kate & Gertrude Willis called. Tom back & saw them. Eva Thomson phoned sorry she did not speak to Papa over the phone had a cold was resting form 8-5 would we three lunch with her Sunday at 1 o'clock? Jessie Fanshawe phoned. Tom answered all home for tea. We three dined together. I wrote Eva accepting for Sunday. Aunt Lina phoned. She is feeling miserable & ill. Saturday January 28 Bright & windy Packed box with tea gowns & roses etc & was out side waiting for Kate D – at 10:45 waited until 11:30. She phone she was delayed came later we lunched at together at Woodenausten house before four o'clock. St Ignatius Church Found Aunt Carrie Delano waiting to see me, Alice had phoned while I was out came later & met C. Delano. Miss Bradley phoned. Kelsey sent suit & dress. We three dined together also had afternoon tea at home. Papa phoned before 12 about having been to the Office for Woodlawn papers he had signed he left it there at their office. Sunday January 29 Clear I received at 7 o'clock Mass. Mrs Ames walked to this corner with me. Mrs Krebs stopped outside this door & spoke to me. Miss Bradley gave me a gift from Boston. I went to the 11 o'clock Mass & sat back. Papa Tom & I lunched with Eva & Mrs Purdy. Papa & I returned in mad ave [Madison Avenue?] car & subway raining hard. Met Elsie Stone O. & husband? Miss Munroe walked to the church with me this morning. Alice phoned on my return. We missed Donald & Eugene who called. We three for high tea together. Monday January 30 Clear Went to 7 o'clock mass was there just before the canon. A note from Alice enclosure for K. Wrote Alice. Paid Lizzie Kelsey's woman. Packed away Mama's things in the little trunk in Papa's room. Anna helped me. So terribly sad. Alice's 2nd note came she phoned she would not be up as she was going out with Fraulein. Eva here 3.20 brought Victor machine & disks, loans it to us for a month! Also letters for me to read. Joe here. Julia Nott phoned. Miss Bradley was out when I phoned her. Nice letter from Patsey. I answered it. Cora phoned & came & took tea, we three dined together. Tuesday January 31 Bright & cold. Went to see Aunt Lina she was very nervous – walked here with Miss Sherman & me. Tom put in 2 disks for her. Carrie Ward called. Alice called. Saw Tom & he told her I had gone to Aunt Lina & she drove & met us on West End Avenue. Jessie & Billy lunched here. Miss Smalley stopped for tea, also Miss Bradley, Tom took tea with the latter & me. Papa home but had his tea in the dining room. He did not feel like seeing any one. A letter about Miss Munroe. I answered it. We three dined together. Mrs Coleman told me that Mrs Burnett had lost her sister. I wrote her & sent Papa & Tom's card. Wednesday February 1 St Ignatius Day bright & clear. I was in time for matins. Fr Burnett celebrated mass at 7. I received. Cora walked home with me. Needles from Eva Thomson for Victor machine. Finished the red stole for Ward's Island. Ordered alcohol for lamp for tea table. Papa home for tea. I read in the letters Eva left me. We 3 dined together. Arranged a few things in Papa's room in the afternoon. Thursday February 2 Rainy Went to 10 o'clock mass. Wrote Eva thanked her for the letters & needles. Kate Dinsmore stopped in her motor for me & we left the letters at Eva's & lunched with Gertrude Kate & little Kate brought me home. Fr Burnett called Tom & I saw him he hurried away for Vespers. We 3 dined together. Howard came, we had the Victor. Met Fr Ritchie as I was on the steps going to Kate's motor. Friday February 3 Gray day later snow Went to mass at ten Papa walked with me to the church. Alice phoned twice, & sent mutton to try her way of cooking. Julia Nott phoned & came here about 3.30 Agnes had been here. Joe lunched. I phoned Miss Bradley. She did not have anything for me to embroider. Julia Papa & I had tea together. We dined alone Papa Tom & I. Tom out for a while afterwards. Howard here, had the Victor. Letter from Pauline Hamilton. I answered it. She dreamed of Mama being all in white Friday night Dec 9th 1910. Saturday February 4 Rain & clear later Arranged Papa's clothes etc Joe phoned & came in the afternoon. I went to Vespers. Alice phoned earlier she had neuralgia in her head. Tom had tea alone. We three dined together. Sunday February 5 Bright Windy Went to 11 o'clock mass. Fr Burnett read the Litany. I sat in our seat. Miss Hubbard walked partly home with me. We 3 for lunch. Anna's afternoon out. Papa earache laid on the divan & took a nap. Cora phoned & came for tea. Tom & I dined alone. Monday February 6 Gray early snow later Saw Aunt Lina, met Miss Seaenoaks (?) coming away from there. Joe lunched with us. Alice wrote note & I answered & thanked her. Jessie wrote she would not come for me to go to Woodlawn roads in country too bad to bring up large car. They will not lunch here Tuesday. Went to Miss Bradley's brought red stole to make up. Wrote Jessie. Alice phoned. We 3 had tea & dined together. Anna out for extra treat. Tuesday February 7 Snowing Alice phoned she was going to see Aunt Fannie. Tom & I lunched together. I arranged boxes etc in my room. Letter from Marie Mohr. Miss Bradley here for tea. Also Tom. Cora phoned she had ordered a cake for Papa she sent him a funny little gift. We dined alone there. Papa went out afterwards. Tom & I sat in the music room he read & I read aloud to him. Wednesday February 8 Gray Papa's birthday anniversary. Tom & I gave him a tiny cadeau. Tom ordered a nice little dinner. Julia Nott phoned. Aunt Fannie was too nervous to see Alice yesterday. Alice here went to see Aunt Fannie & found her depressed. Alice phoned later after her visit to her. Cora sent Papa an exquisite cake. Aunt Lina phoned, Miss Shepherd was going out would I go & see her? Miss Sheppard phoned me it was hailing. It was too slippery. Joe here. Tom & she took walk & Joe stopped a short time. Tom & I had nearly finished lunch before she came the first time. Papa Tom & I had a most lovely Birthday dinner with Papa. Tom had all the candles lighted as we entered the dining room. Thursday February 9 Gray & bad walking Alice phoned. I arranged silver trifles etc in Tom's rooms having sewed something for Papa. Lunched alone. Tom left very note asking Mrs Johnson to come & see me. She answered she would. Anna out. Wrote Gertrude Willis. Papa, Tom, & I dined together. Friday February 10 Clear Went to 10 o'clock mass. Lunched alone. Went to Aunt Lina's she was much better. Pauline came. Agnes did my hair. Alice phoned. Jessie phoned they were going to the country. Jessie had a bad cold. Mrs Rede called. I could not see her. Cora her mother & Mrs Ames here for tea. C. & Mrs Barr brought jonquils & red carnations. Cora sent me a beautiful vase with gilt ornamentation. We three dined together. I phoned & thanked Cora & she called me up after. Saturday February 11 Bright & clear Papa went to Aunt Lina's. I left a note at St Ignatius. Miss Sherman phoned me Aunt Lina had had a bad night cold in her back. Dr J with her at 7 this morning. I wrote a note to Fr R. & left it. Joe lunched with Tom & me. I went to market & took Aunt Lina her paper. Went in motor with Pauline to 45th St. She returned with me & had tea with Tom & me. Papa had taken his & was lying down in his room. Mrs Krebs called while I was out left a most beautiful prayer for me. We 3 dined together. Pauline Hamilton sent exquisite book murrils (?) I made up the stole partly. Sunday February 12 Clear 4th Sunday 50 cts I went to 7 o'clock Mass Fr Ritchie celebrant. Thanked Mrs Krebs. Mrs Ames walked a way with me. Went to Litany & 11 o'clock. "Do not ? to be seen of ?" Murray & Marie Young bowed to them. Talked with Miss Biedermass & Miss Cotheal. We 3 lunched alone. Monday February 13 Gray sky Tom packed, I sewed & he & I lunched together. Alice phoned in the morning. I found Aunt Lina very ill. Jessie phoned she would be up tomorrow – told her of Tom's expected marriage. Kate Dinsmore called him up. He & I dined alone. Papa home after dinner. We three together in the evening. Cora phoned. I sewed & read after the others were in bed. Augusta phoned but would not come as I was going to Aunt Lina's. Miss Bayne called while I was out. Tuesday February 14 Tom & Josephine Jarvis married Taxi number 7222507 Gray day & snow in the afternoon. We sat with Tom while he had coffee etc. He packed, answered Josephine's phone, secured Taxi & left 7 minutes of 11 o'clock. He waved to me until out of sight. He took note from me to J. & also "Bien te Garde". Tom telephoned me about 4:30 p.m. "C'est finis" etc. Alice's note came. I went to the Bank. Jessie here for a few minutes. Cousin Emma phoned this morning & came for the first time since her operation, she had tea with Papa & me. Anna cleaned Tom's room & I arranged some of his things just after he left. Note from Patsey (& valentine?) I answered it. Nielans? I sent post card to Julia Nott phoned Aunt Fannie had just received Tom's letter – very sweet she was. Cora phoned twice. I could not motor today. Precious Mother taken ill two months ago today. Alice phoned Benny home all today. Wednesday February 15 Clear & cold Phone from Tom. Cora phoned. Alice Lawrence phoned. Papa phoned. Aunt Lina had a more comfortable night. Alice phone second time. Papa home at 3 had lunch. Miss Smalley here for tea. We had some ?. Tom phoned again. Cora phoned me in the evening. Papa & I dined & he laid on the divan in the music room & I read aloud from H Davis "Latitude". I slept next to him in Tom's room. Thursday February 16 Bright & cold. Note from Jessie, she & Billy will not lunch here Friday as they go to the Farm. Papa went out for his ?alol tablets papers etc. he is going to stay home & take care of his cold. Patsey here from 10.20 to 11.30 about. Alice phoned Aunt Fannie had a bad day yesterday, seemed discouraged when she talked over the phone last night. Papa & I lunched he is lying down. Tom came about 2.15 Lilias in for tea, missed seeing Tom. He phoned later. I posted or rather enclosed to Tom Stella H? receipts etc. Cora phoned me. Papa & I dined. Friday February 17 Gray day. Loved message from Aunt Fannie as few lines only "delighted about Tommy." Alice phoned. Kelsey phoned. Augusta phoned. Tom phoned, He & Josephine lunched here left early. Tom phoned late in the afternoon changes of address to 15 East 11th St. Agnes came. Papa was reading aloud to me The vermilion pencil. Augusta came soon after & stayed for tea. Cora phoned 3 times & came for tea as Augusta had left. Papa & I dined, he read more in the book, both went to bed early. Saturday February 18 Rain threatened, windy & damp. Went out – did a few little things. Phoned Lilias, she will market for us today & for tomorrow. Tom arrived on the America Tuesday noon Dec. 20th 1910 & the bird Cock Robin sang two beautiful songs - & again today about 3.5 P.M. he sang a lovely little song. Tom came in soon after three & stayed till 4.12. Lilias had phoned. Papa & I dined. Cora phoned - & brought Dewey. Sunday February 19 Very cold – high wind Went to 11 o'clock mass met Mrs Barr. Spoke with Mrs Shirley. Miss Hunt spoke to me. Uncle Eugene here, Aunt Lina better. Papa & I lunched Tom phoned – He & Josephine came about 2.30 – Cora phoned & met Josephine. Tom arranged the dinner, Anna's day out. Papa out for a while in the afternoon home for his tea. He read & I slept in my room the first time since the 14th as Papa wanted me in Tom's room other nights. Monday February 20 Snow storm readdressed 4 letters to Tom. He phoned. Alice phoned. Papa went out. Letter from F.H. Papa phoned Aunt Lina had a comfortable night & was going to sit up. Letter from Tom. Called up Miss Bradley she is better. Mrs Shirley here spent the afternoon we had the Victor. She met Papa & had tea with him. Received note from Alice. Tuesday February 21 Bright & cold Lilias ordered for me. Wrote Alice & thanked her. Miss Bradley saw me she is better. Alice phoned & Tom while I was out. Read & arranged letters etc. Alice here. Schatz Emma & Papa for tea. Papa & I dined, he went out, I arranged papers etc in his room. Wednesday February 22 Sunny & cold Met Howard with Frances in her carriage. Went to Kelsey's. Tom phoned while I was out & Cora. Sunday February 26 Mild & sunny Papa went to Woodlawn. Home for lunch with me. I went to Litany & 11 o'clock mass. Spoke with Marie & Mr Young. Found Aunt Lina in the parlor – she seemed very weak – but looked better. Tom phoned they would not be up were to dine at Louie's? Anna out after dinner extra evening. Papa read. I went to bed. Monday February 27 Bright lovely day very windy in the afternoon I received in the chapel at 7 o'clock mass. Breakfasted with Papa, went to market etc. Alice note arrive wrote her posted it to her. Gave Mr Bauer Aunt Lina's cruficix [sic] to mend. Found her sitting in the parlor, looking better she had walked a little with Miss Sherman. I lunched about 2 at home – out for a few minutes & then sewed. Papa & I had tea. Cora phoned me while I was out in the morning. Kelsey's girl took my dress to put in order where it had given away. Tuesday February 28. 1911 Arranging the room closet for Josephine. Cora phoned would I go for a spin. No. Went to church. Papa came home early & had his tea & read. I did not take any on my return. Miss Bradley here. Papa & I alone for dinner, he went out. Wednesday March 1 Ash Wednesday very cold Went to 7 o'clock mass in time for end of matins & the distribution of ashes Fr Burnett celebrated. Waited home until after 12. Tom came in the afternoon – did up my accts – showed me Dr L's letter. Papa, Tom, home for tea. Tom went for Josephine. They arrived in Taxi with their things. We 4 dined together. I slept in the music room. Went to Vespers. Tom phoned Dr H Lyle who thought his wound was all right in the afternoon. Thursday March 2 Snow & clear, snow & clear Tom told me what clothes he would not take to Europe. Josephine & I spent the morning with him while he sorted out his things. I dashed out & back. Tom saw Mr T & liked him. We 3 had lunch. Tom went to Dr Johnson who thought the wound was all right. Josephine Tom & I dined together. Tom left in Taxi a quarter before nine. Josephine did not sleep well. I received lovely note from Aunt Fannie & post card of Atlantic City. Friday March 3 Clear afterwards grey Went to 11 o'clock mass. In & out house ordering etc. Saw Weis twice about Tom's dressing gown. Billy Jessie & Julia for lunch met Josephine. She afterwards went for the blue silk for Tom's gown. Aunt Carrie Delano's maid phoned. Would I be home. She came about 3. Agnes did my hair in Tom's room. Papa had tea with me. Cora phoned & brought Dewey in the evening. Josephine Papa & I dined together. Alice phoned me in the afternoon. I called up Aunt Lina. She was better & had had lovely flowers & birthday gifts. Note from Patsey still at the Harriman's (?). I answered asking her to come when convenient to her. Saturday March 4 Snowy & damp Josephine & I spent the morning together. Josephine out twice to see Weis & to buy more blue for Tom. Patsey phoned & came about 3. Papa home for tea with her and me. Alice came so glad she did. I was not able to go & see her, too bad, seemed as if I could do so easily. Josephine & Alice met Patsey, and we talked of Tom etc. Josephine sewed in music room. Papa went out. Mrs Lyon phoned would I come to see her, I did not feel equal to going. Phoned T's - phoned L not in. Sunday March 5 Josephine went to 10 o'clock mass & I stayed in bed until nearly 12. Phoned Alec not in. He called me up before three. Papa Josephine & I lunched together. Lilias called met Josephine. Papa walked with Lilias to see Aunt Lina only stayed a short time. Papa left Lilias at a friend's house. Josephine Papa & I had tea. Tom returned ill had malted milk. I was too ill to finish tea in the dining room with them. Went to bed in Tom's room. I arranged divan in music room for Tom. Anna out. Papa brought plaster for me. Lovely – I was not at all strong, the first morning I dressed since I was ill. Edith phoned she would come or be here at three if she could, or tomorrow if she could. Alice phoned. My arm was too weak to hold receiver longer. Mrs Lampher here, told me of Mrs Wilson's death! I laid on divan – not strong she asked me to Pelham Manor. Saturday March 18 Grey & dreary Tom up 6.20 we four breakfasted together Tom left note for me. Tom & Josephine left 8.15. Carriage with two horses took 2 of J's trunks 2 trunks of Tom's, a bag, a carry all & his hat box! Tom phoned from Kornig Albert – arranged things & laid down. Cora here from 11.30 – 12. She sent box of exquisite red tulips jonquils narcissi & pansies in the afternoon late. I lunched, wrote Fr Ritchie for prayers for those at sea & gave him the note in the church. Spoke to Mrs Shirley Miss Hubbard & Mrs Lyon & Catherine. Papa & I lunched. Herbert came a little after 4 stopped until a quarter of 7. He & papa talked of places in the South, very interesting. Went to ten mass. Spoke to Mrs Burnett. Mrs Lyons walked with me to Bretton Hall where we talked. Alice phoned while I was out wrote to Augusta, Alice & posted note to Jessie. Miss Bradley phoned me. I stayed embroidering with her about 3 hours. Laid down, dressed & took tea with Cora heard exquisite records. Papa home for his tea I left him reading – found him asleep in his room on my return. He tried xrays for my knee found it just as he thought – was disappointed I did not look better. I went to market. Papa home reading before I went to Vespers. To Mrs Lyon's afterwards, little Catherine with her. Bought large envelopes to enclose letters sent to Tom from Ville d'aoray – sent 2 Anna had the whole weighted at Rollers. Rainy as I returned. Papa came to meet me, we dined alone. Augusta phoned about the lunch my coming on Thursday. Thursday March 23 Very cold & high winds Received at 7 mass Fr Ritchie I embroidered. Called Alice Anna did. Augusta came for me in Miss Williard's before Alice could answer the wire "busy". Had a delightful lunch with Augusta & Miss Smalley. Augusta brought me home in a Taxi, beautiful drive, Augusta left shortly Papa appeared. He had tea, read aloud to me. Slept on the divan, I embroidered. Anna out. Papa & I dined & went to bed early. Friday March 24 Very windy Went to ten o'clock Mass, embroidered before & most of the day, after lunch embroidered at Miss Bradley's. Miss Smalley & I had tea together. Papa had more of a lunch in the dining room. Agnes here. Mrs Lampher called Anna explained Agnes was here. Papa & I dined alone. He went out. Miss Bradley phoned twice to know how the work was progressing. Wrote Herbert. Saturday March 25 Bright Feast of the Annunciation went to ten o'clock mass. Miss Hanson walked a bit with me. Went to market. Wrote notes, went to church & to vespers. Wrote & thanked Mrs Kellogg for Tribute to Judge Bartlett she sent me. Only one week today since Tom & Josephine sailed! Had a few words with Fr Burnett after Vespers. Mrs Burnett pretty well. Sunday March 26 Bright & mild Papa out early. I went to Litany & 11 o'clock mass. Mr Young joined me - & I said Bon Voyage to him & sent my love to Marie. They go into Spain motoring & expect to be in Paris by June. The Crothers & Mrs Pollacks' mother spoke to me in the street. Mrs Coleman & Miss Bradley in the church. Herbert telephoned they were going to Boston on the 4 o'clock train & on to Bar Harbor. Went to Vespers & Benediction Fr Ritchie, Mrs Ames & Cora walked to this corner with me, I spoke to Ruth Moran she promised to come to see me. Cora & I had tea. Alice phoned twice She stopped for me in her motor with Aunt Nellie Jerome, we lunched with Alice. They two went to meeting missionary. The motor brought me home. Went to the Bank. Read. Wrote Jessie. Sent card to the Wheelers in S. & the Schwabs. Did little things, & went to Eagen's before 12. Papa & I dined together & afterwards read in the music room. Anna took Tom's clothes many of them on the roof & we put them in his large wicker trunk. Thunder & rain & storm at 5.5 P.M. Miss Smalley walked to the substation with me. Tuesday April 11 Bright Mrs Lyon told me her daughter was to be operated upon at 7 this morning & that she would know at noon. We were at Mass 10 o'clock there. I went to market met Lilias. Alice phoned she would come for me in her motor, we stopped at Palmer's & for Aunt Nellie J. & lunched with Alice. The motor took me to Mrs Lyon's she was resting in her room – told me the operation would not be until tomorrow. Papa home for his tea, I sewed then went to Vespers. We dined alone. I sewed while he was out & after he went to bed. Wednesday April 12 Beautiful, cold & bright I went to ten o'clock mass, saw Mrs Lyon, but did not disturb her. Went to market. Arranged Papa's clothes Went to Mrs Lyon's her maid told me Mrs Boston's operation took place this morning. Papa had finished tea. I had mine, sewed. Went to Vespers. Mrs Jones came home with me. Late in the afternoon a post-card of The Ligual Station at Gibraltar from Tom dated March 29th (Wed) Thursday April 13 Maundy beautiful & bright I was in time for part of Matins & received at the 7 o'clock mass Father Burnett celebrated Father Ritchie served. Met Mrs Lyon, Boston children, & companion. Father Ritchie celebrated the 10 o'clock mass & carried the Blessed Sacrament to the small altar shrine, where lights & lilies were arranged. Good Friday April 14 Clear Letter from Uncle Eugene Schatz's operation successful (on the 12th). 2 letters to me from Tom from Tangier March 31st & April 2nd, also 2 Post-cards Hotel Cecil & Tips de la Kabila de Raisuli Tangier. Papa received a letter & post card of Village aux environs de Tangier also. Papa & I went to the 3 hour service at St Ignatius Father Ritchie conducted it. Papa stayed until one o'clock – lunched at home. Cora brought me home in her car in the pouring rain a little after 3 o'clock. A phone from Alice. Aunt Fannie's note arrived. I went to bed soon after 3 on my return & dined in bed. Papa home early in the evening. The service was beautiful at the 3 hours. Received a most lovely card from Aunt Lina. Mama left us 4 months ago today. May light perpetual shine upon her. Saturday April 15 Wrote to Fr Ritchie & Fr Burnett telling of Schatz's successful operation. Left Easter card for Mrs Lyon. Received 6th letter from Tom from Tangier April 7th & 2nd letter from Gibraltar on his return there dated April 8th Papa Postcard from Tangier. Tom had just received my letters April 9th. They were to leave for Naples Tues April 18th. Sat on the river side drive, read Master & Maid. Rainy. Wrote & asked Augusta to drive Thursday - & posted it. Papa & I dined. Anna & I arranged the boxes for the shelves. Alice phoned & came for me in the motor. I lunched with her & she took me to Donovan's & we waited there until late in the afternoon. Wednesday April 26 Pleasant Alice's note arrived, I answered it & she phoned me. Miss Smalley called, but I was in bed & did not see her. Papa & I were in Tom's room & Papa was taking his tea. Papa dined alone & went out. Cora phoned. A letter form Jessie telling of Billy & Clara being thrown out of their motor a week ago Tuesday? Billy not injured. I answered Jessie's letter immediately dined in bed & finished The Lyon's Skin by Rafael Sabatim. Thursday April 27 Charmingly warm Papa's eye looked very red the right one. He has had gauze cloths wet in Boraic acid on it all day, & has slept most of the time. A note from Elizabeth Carson. I answered, & asked her for tea Monday. Miss Smalley phoned I asked her to come today. Anna out 1.15 to get her steamer ticket. Lilias here Julia's operation successful this morning. She's at Dr Bull's private Hospital. Papa went to see Dr Johnson who sent him to Dr Holzapfel 391 West End Avenue near 79th St. His phone Schuyler 9150. He examined his eyes & gave Papa a prescription to drop 2 drops of (sic) in his right eye every two hours – Pooler put it up – 53 118 April 28th 1911. His eye was not painful. Agnes here. I wrote & thanked him for it – answering his letter to me & his to Papa. Two years ago Father Burgess went to see Tom (Sunday evening it was) This afternoon I said a prayer for him at St Ignatius, & in memory of 2 yrs ago - when Mama and I were so grateful for Tom! Saw Mrs Johnson & Bunny in the street before lunch. Friday June 9 Perfect day Jessie phoned she would come for me at half past ten. She reached here almost 11. Jessie, Julia, Isabel & Lena & I went to Woodlawn. The pansies were lovely. Jessie brought the loveliest pink & white roses from the farm & the place was exquisite with them. The girls arranged most of them, I only a few. They went to the Polo match. Agnes here. I was glad to see Miss Smaley later. Cora came a little after two – on her way to Seabright. Saturday June 10 Emma lunched with Papa & me. I finished Anna of the five towns. Papa went out. Anna out for a short time. Papa home in lull of the thunder storm. Sunday June 11 Very hot I sat on the roof an hour & a half. Papa & I lunched together. I spent another hour on the roof. Went to Benediction. Phoned Miss Bradley to come & take tea with me she was out. Had tea & spent an hour on the roof. Papa & I dined together. Frightful thunder storm. Monday June 12 St Barnabas Day No ten Mass, only at 7. I went to the church in the morning for a little while. Went to see Miss Bradley. Egan's an hour & a half on the roof. Went to Kelsey's. Had tea & spent 1 hour & twenty minutes on the roof. Papa took tea with Eva. Alice called while I was out of the apartment. A letter from Augusta on board the Mauretania. Thursday June 15 Today 6 months since Mama left us. Perfect Day. Corpus Christi. Slept too late for 7 o'clock Mass. Went to St Ignatius no mass at 10. Had 2 trunks put in order, arranged things in boxes etc. Papa & I dined alone. He went to see Lilias. Friday June 16 Beautiful Went to Mass at 10. Alice phoned me twice. Agnes stopped in. Tuesday June 20 Very hot Bought waists etc & went to Roller's, arranged things until last minute. Hansom sent by Jessie. Papa & I drove to the boat. Jessie & Billy met us. Uncle Willie was on the same train but we did not meet until arriving there. Papa & Uncle Willie went to see the horses, Jessie & I were caught in shower in the rose garden. Papa & I motored with Jessie to Longbranch & after dinner with Uncle Willie there again & saw the illuminations. Jessie went too. My trunk arrived. Marie unpacked it about 11. Silver Brook Farm Thursday June 22 Hot I had a terrible headache. Stayed on the sofa until lunch. A hard shower & then clear. Jessie & Uncle Willie left Papa & me in the motor at Julia & Louis' for dinner while they dined with friends the Schwatz. We sat on the piazza after dinner had a very pleasant time. Papa & I chatted with her. Tuesday June 27 Very hot Jessie took Papa & me to Red Bank in the car. We reached home before 1 o'clock. The roses I bought were lovely. Mrs Johnson , Miss Bradley, Mrs Lyons had some. Mrs Johnson took tea with me. Papa only lunched at home. Mr Taylor phoned me. Alice's note arrived & she also phoned me. Lilias & Howard could not come here, so I went there to say good bye – they leave for Black Point tomorrow morning. A letter from Tom enclosing order for ten pounds. Saw Mrs Bradley & Miss Bradley – went into St Ignatius for a little while. Trunk arrived about five. I unpacked Papas dress suit case, & some of my things. Slept in Tom's room. Very tired. I wrote Aunt Lina, & sent Post office order to Uncle Eugene to Williamstown. I wrote & thanked Tom for the ten pounds. Wrote to Cousin Julia Munroe, & Jessie Fanshawe. Had tea alone. Went to ten Mass. After to Egan & brought white paper bags, & took some vegetables to Mrs Johnson. Paid Kelcey $15.00, & after went to market. Cora phoned phoned (sic) from place to take Seabright boat she would not come. I sent note to Mrs Johnson to come for tea, whi (sic) she did. Liebermann's (Mrs Dickey's cousin) wrote telling me of Mme Schiller's being unconscious since Friday night from the breaking of a blood vessel in her brain after an acute attack of indigestion, I answered it. Took Tom's pillows down & divan cover & packed all with his hangins etc. Bridget & I arranged things in the parlor, & the music room. A letter from Uncle Eugene acknowledging Post office order. Wednesday December 13 Gray Went to market, & to Higgins & Seiter's & two other shops. Cora phoned me while out. Went to see her she had gone to Brooklyn. Took things to Miss Blains Miss Bradley & Mrs Sigsten's tables at the sale. Cora here for tea. Mrs Barr a little later they bought 3 purses Mrs Tyler gave for the sale. After dinner Katie & I took the afgan & Sacque to Mrs Satphen's table – her daughter took them. They were returned the next morning. Papa went out. Jessie phoned me. Thursday December 14 Rain clear later Went to market. Wrote Cousin Julia. Jessie phoned me. I sat on the roof. Wrote to Tom. We three home alone. One year ago – Friday December 15 Rained A lovely note from Aunt Lina. Went to the ten o'clock Mass Fr Burnett remembered Mama at the Altar. Father Ritchie had prayed for her at the 7 o'clock Mass. Mrs Burnett spoke to me, & Mrs . Met Miss cope. Wrote to Aunt Lina. A box of exquisite pink & white roses from Aunt Lina & Uncle Eugene. Made tea for Papa. Went to Vespers. Spoke with Miss Hobbs & Mrs Moore. Josephine went to see her sister. Wrote to Julia White, & Aunt Lina. Monday December 18 Very cold A letter from Aunt Lena. Wrote & thanked Cousin Julia for L'illustration arrived this morning. Did up trifles. Wrote Mrs Lyon, went to market. On the roof 3.15 – 5.15. Mrs Johnson called. Kate called me up to ask Jessie to take me to Kate's to lunch Wed at 1.30. Jessie out when I phoned. Called me up after dinner. A beautiful gift from Tom for Christmas. A note from Alice. Wednesday December 20 Jessie sent her motor for me, I took Christmas things with me to 33 West 51st St. Mrs Woodward spoke with me while I was waiting in the motor for Jessie. We lunched with Kate & met Alice Lawrence there. Afterwards Kate showed me the Ritz tea room, & sent me in her car to Mrs Satterlee's. It seemed best to return in the car which I did – phoning Mrs Satterlee from 200. Marion answered. I called on Mrs Johnson who was out, & called up Kate, explaining why I did not wait for her to pick me up at Mrs Satterlee's. Papa phoned twice from the Club. Josephine & I dined alone. Thursday December 21 Went to Dr Johnson's office. Saw Mrs Johnson first & the baby. Friday December 22 Went to ten o'clock Mass. Kate phoned me while I was out. Papa answered. She sent her maid with note before 12 o'clock. A letter from Cousin Julia before 3 o'clock. Agnes here a little before 10 o'clock. Pouring. Left note with Dr J. before 5 o'clock. Alice sent me a note. I wrote & thanked her Friday? Wrote to Cousin Julia. Letter from Tom. Received a plant form Aunt Carrie. Saturday December 23 Rain Received at the 7 o'clock Mass. Father Ritchie celebrated. Out again. Letter from Tom. Wrote tom & enclosed cards for Christmas. A book from Augusta Childs, wrote & thanked her. Card from Mrs Lampher. Verses & picture from Mrs Lyon. Card from Edith Arnold. Went to St Ignatius before 3 o'clock. Sent a plant & card to Cora. Card from Miss Fanshawe Dec 23? Christmas Eve Day Sunday December 24 Received at the 7 o'clock Mass. Father Ritchie celebrated. Arranged things. Papa ill in bed with a cold. Augusta Childs here. Herbert Satterlee sent a book. Kate out. Papa & I dined together. Papa out after. Josephine & I had the Christmas shrine lighted. I had arranged it early in the day. Josephine opened her Christmas box from her sister & gave me my presents from her. Charming ones. Christmas Monday December 25 Cold Went to 9 o'clock Mass & received, Fr Ritchie celebrated. Wrote & thanked Herbert for his book. Papa left card for Lilias. Card from Miss Barrett – sachet from Patsey. Papa's cold better he went to the Club. I lunched in Tom's room & went to bed. J spent the day with her sister. Papa J & I dined together. Josephine & I went to bed early. Jessie phoned on her return from Shrewsbury – delighted with their things. I left two cards for Mrs Johnson early, & one for Mrs Lyon. Aunt Fannie phoned me a little encouraged about Julia – not well herself. Tuesday December 26 Alice Lawrence phoned me. Stayed in bed all day. Dr W here. Marie took hat to Jessie she had phoned about it. Cora phoned me. St John's Day Wednesday December 27 Was up in the morning & lunched with Papa. Went to bed afterwards, felt so ill. Papa phoned he would not be home till later. J dined alone. I read in bed during the day. Holy Innocents Day Thursday December 28 Terribly windy Went to ten o'clock Mass. To the market. Sat on the roof for over an hour. Sewed. J home all day sewing. Papa out after dinner. Went to bed early. Received Tom's letter. Sent Anna Wirwig card & thanked her for hers. Also a card & thanks to Mrs Lampher, & Edith Arnold. Papa out after dinner. J & I went to bed early. Friday December 29 Very windy Went to ten o'clock Mass. Spoke with Mrs Lyon, & Mrs Tyler. Went to market etc. A letter from Aunt Lina. Lilias told me over the phone Julia had had a quart of water taken from her lung. Wrote a card to Aunt Fannie, to Emma Jerome, to Miss Barretto. Wrote & thanked Tom. Cora sent me a lovely silver frame. I wrote her a card of thanks. Sat on the roof 2 ¼ hours. Miss Smalley joined me there. We had tea together. Papa, J & I dined together. Eva Thomson phoned asking Papa & me to lunch with her at one Sunday to meet Hall Purdy & his wife. Miss Bradley called me up. Saturday December 30 Gray In & out until lunch time & then out until after 2. Arranged things in Tom & Papa's room. Mrs Hogan here for tea. Phoned Cora to thank her for cakes. Mrs Barr answered. Cora phoned me later. J Papa & I dined together. Papa went to smoker. Met Lilias she told me of Julia how much better she was. Sent Uncle Willie card, Patsey, Miss Burnett, Aunt Lina & Uncle Eugene, Mrs Kellogg. Diary to Tom. Sunday December 31 Raining Tom came home with the dog early. Too story for me to go & lunch with Eva. I phoned I would not go. Papa went & phoned he would not be home for dinner. Tom & I lunched together. I went to Vespers. Miss Van Pelt walked a way with me. We four dined together. Went to bed early. Heard the horns & whistles blow at 12 o'clock. Katie out after dinner. Spent the night with her sister. Home in time to get the Breakfast.
