Ferris, Clerk City of New York applied as Nicholas Oliver but his full name was Richard Nicholas Oliver. letter sent to Norris S. Oliver of East Orange, NJ in 1929 another letter sent to Mrs. John R. Aust or Hust. (She intermingles him up with Nickerson/Nicholas Oliver of Halifax Co, VA but the data do not match.) Nicholas Oliver enlisted into Captain Rudolph’s Company and remained until the close of the war. His company was disbanded on 30 June 1783 in Charleston, SC. Witnesses were David Brown and Pilip Nulkerson, a classmate from NJ. His possessions totaled $59.57 1/2, with no real estate. A list is included. He states he worked as a Carpenter, Ship Joiner and Cabinet Maker after the war but because of a wound in his leg and rheumatism in his shoulders he can no longer do this much. on 6 April 1818 he was living in New York, aged 58 (therefore born 1760) Native of New Jersey. States wife was named Elizabeth and was 46 in 1821 and in poor health. States his son Simmons (sp?) is 22 and weakly and slender. Although he has tried mechanical jobs, these proved too hard and he has been hospitalized for months at a time. His daughter Caroline 13 is at home but is also weak and sickly. His son David is healthy but only 6. He is assisted in support of his family by a brother in New Bern, NC (not named) and a brother-in-law in Charleston, SC (not named.
