General Winfield Scott Hancock, senior major-general of the United States 
army, died very suddenly last Tuesday morning.  he was the nominee of the 
democratic party for president, in 1880, against Garfield, republican.  He was 
a patriotic and gallant soldier, spotless and accomplished gentleman, and 
liked by his fellow countrymen.  One by one the great men of America are 
passing away!
