BURTON-Robert J., 83, of Paris, France, died on Sunday, August 15, 2004. A Columbia College 1942 graduate, he was the youngest American diplomat sent to the Eastern bloc following World War II. Graham Rushing, 88, died peacefully on Friday, July 9, 2004 surrounded by his family at Francis House, a home for the terminally ill in Syracuse, NY. A 1937 graduate of the University of Mississippi, Rev. Hodges earned a bachelor of divinity degree from Yale University in 1940. He was a parish minister for many years for the United Church of Christ in northern and central NY and spent 23 years as pastor of Emmanuel Congregational Church in Watertown, NY. In 1971 he was elected moderator of the NY Conference of the United Church of Christ. He was active on the local and state levels with the American Heart Association and served as chairman of the board for the statewide NYS Heart Affiliate. He was a founder of the statewide NYS Coalition for Family Planning and of Planned Parenthood of Northern NY. He wrote several books of children's sermons published by Abingdon Press as well as many magazine articles and letters to the editor. He was an unwavering advocate for social justice and a caring parish minister as well as a devoted husband and father. His wife, Elsie Russell Hodges, whom he married in 1941, died in June 2000. He is survived by his children, Mary Buckley of Liverpool, NY, Graham Hodges of Hamilton, NY, Judith Rippeteau of Washington, DC and Janet Casler of Humble, TX; six grandchildren, Caroline, Maison and Eva Rippeteau, Rosemary and Andrew Casler and Elizabeth Buckley and two sisters, Jessie Anna Puryear of Senatobia, MS and Lucille Bennett of Austin, TX. KUPPERMAN Abner J. Born October 20, 1913 in Newark, NJ. Died August 18, 2004 in Hollywood, FL. Beloved husband of Mary, loving Pop to the late Ron; Ken and Kim. Stepdad to Gil and Richard. Grandfather of Keiko, Francis, and Jason. Brother of the late Adeline and Herbert. Son of the late Fanny and Isaac. Abner served the Jewish people as National Executive Director of JDA, worked for ADL and AJC, among other organizations, and served as Vice President of Brandeis University. Along with the late Abba Eban, he helped produce WNET's ``Civilization and the Jews.'' His impact on the fundraising community, and his desire to see his loved ones happy, will be felt for a long time to come. He'll always be remembered as a passionate cigar smoker and a high roller. August 12, 2004 at home, Lynchburg, VA. Born Devil's Lake, ND, June 8, 1907; graduated magna cum laude Rockford College; awarded fellowship (Philosophy) Cornell; chose Broadway. Starred in ``Fiesta'', two plays with Mrs. Fiske, ``Pursuit of Happiness'', and many roles on radio. With husband and C.D. Morris formed production company for the new entertainment medium. Some 35 daily and weekly programs came out of their shop, including ``Rinso Show'', ``Lux Theatre of the Air'', and ``The Shadow''. In addition, she read thousands of manuscripts in support of her husband's position as Editor-inChief of ``True Story Magazine'', which shared circulation honors with ``Life''. After her husband's sudden death in 1942, Mrs. Rapp was named to the Editorial Board of Macfadden Pub. and served on Education Committee of the Magazine Publishers Association. She wrote hundreds of articles for various women's magazines and lectured at over 50 colleges and schools of journalism on article writing and audience analysis. She is survived by her daughter Mrs. Bernard W. Hostrop of Warrenton, VA; her son Dr. William Venable Rapp of Scarborough, NY; two granddaughters: Stacy Rapp, Christina Rapp Prescott; three grandsons: Frederick and Richard Hostrop, Jordan Rapp; and four beloved great-grandchildren.
