Pantone, 5 Inc.'s officers and employees sadly mourn the loss of its long time Vice President Michael C. Garin. His dedication to his job and loyalty to the firm will be sorely missed. He was recognized by the printing industry as a leading contributor to its advancement. Mike Garin was instrumental in the development and evolution of the Pantone Matching System, the global standard for color specification and communication. Kaufer, Sonya Firstenberg 1922 - 2004 Sonya F. Kaufer, a long time editorial leader at the American Jewish Committee, died August 21, 2004 of lung cancer; she was 82. Mrs. Kaufer immigrated to New York from Bialystok, Poland as a young child, and became a US citizen through her father. She worked her way through Lincoln High School and Brooklyn College. She started as a staff writer at the AJC and finished her career there as director of publications. Along the way, she successfully advocated for excellent union contracts and benefits for AJC employees. Her activism also extended to ban-the-bomb work in the 1950s, promotion of civil rights in the 1960s, and support for progressive causes throughout her life. A lifelong learner, Mrs. Kaufer took university courses throughout her life, along the way acquiring an MA from Antioch College in communications, and enough courses for several more. After her retirement from the AJC in 1988, she took two courses per semester at Hunter College through the spring of this year. She volunteered during her retirement at Beth Israel Hospital. Mrs. Kaufer is survived by George Kaufer, her husband of 62 years; her daughters, Drs. Judith Kaufer and Katherine Kaufer Christoffel; her son-in-law, Max Von Hollweg; and her four grandchildren, Kevin Christoffel, David Von Hollweg, Kimberly Christoffel, and Timothy Von Hollweg.
