BARKER-James P. One of New York's most colorful, popular and sometimes controversial sons, died on October 3rd, 2004. He was the President of J.B. Marketing Inc., a national marketing and sale promotion manufacturer, and former Democratic leader in Queens. Jim was born in Woodside, Queens. His deceased wife Eileen was born in Rathmore, County Kerry and both his parents were born in County Monaghan, Ireland. Jim was a graduate for Cardinal Farley Military Academy and Villanova University. In June 1993, he received a Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Sienna College. He was active in his community, fraternal, political, educational and Irish organizations, foremost of which he was the titular head of the St. Patrick's Day Parade, the oldest and largest parade in America. Jim served as a member of the Development Council of Villanova University since 1974. He was also a member of the Division 4 of the Ancient Order of Hiberians, the Friendly Son of St. Patrick, the Americian Irish Historical Society, the Knights of Columbus, the American Catholic Committee and was former president of the St. Patrick's Society of Queens. Jim served on several boards and received numerous accolades and honors including Irishman of the Year, the St. Patrick's Day Medal and was named a Knight of St. Gregory. Heller, a vice president of Ingersoll-Rand Company Limited and the firm's corporate secretary and corporate governance officer, died September 28 in Brooklyn, NY. He was 58 years old and lived in Fair Lawn, NJ. Ronald G. Heller was born May 29, 1946, in New York. He joined Ingersoll-Rand in 1988 as assistant general counsel. His contributions to the company were quickly recognized and he held a series of positions of increasing responsibility. In 1991, Heller was named corporate secretary. He was elected vice president in 2000. This year, he was named to the newly created position of corporate governance officer. ``For those of us fortunate enough to know him, our respect for Ron's abilities was matched only by the admiration that we felt for him as a trusted confidant and valued friend,'' said Herbert L. Henkel, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Ingersoll-Rand. ``A person of keen intellect and compassion, Ron made a positive, substantial impact on virtually every area of the organization.'' Before joining IngersollRand, Heller served as vice president, secretary and general counsel for the apparel manufacturer Cluett Peabody and Co. Before that, he was an associate with the law firm Cahill, Gordon & Reindell. A graduate of the College of the City of New York, Heller earned a juris doctor degree cum laude from Fordham University School of Law, where he was a member of the law review. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association and the American Society of Corporate Secretaries. Heller is survived by his wife, Joyce, and daughters, Beth of Fair Lawn, Amy of New York, and Caren of Los Angeles. Heller is also survived by an aunt, Toni Heller, of Fort Lee, NJ. A funeral service was held in Fair Lawn on September 29. Donations in memory of Ronald G. Leahy, Jelka Makovicka LEAHY-Jelka Makovicka, 63, of Sarasota, FL formerly of New York City passed away Friday, October 1, 2004. She was born in Martin, Czechoslovakia on Novemeber 20, 1940. She moved from Switzerland and England to Whitinsville, MA in 1952 with her parents and brother. Her stepfather was director of Research at Whitin Machine Works. She attended Bennington College and the University of Heidelberg, Germany. She was employed by Dow Chemical Corporation in Paris and Frankfurt and was the head of the International Special Events Department at the Chase Manhattan Bank and was later employed at Rockefeller Family & Associates until her retirement. She was an avid supporter of Slovakia and Chair of the Annual Slovak Ball Committee in New York. She had joie-devivre and wonderful charisma. She is survived by her husband Thomas Leahy of Sarasota, FL and her mother Priska Szaloki of Charlottesville, VA. A Celebration of her life will be held at St. Peters Church, 619 Lexington Ave at 54th St., on Wednesday October 27th bet. 5-7 PM.
