D, 20th Reg, Iowa Infantry. Probably mustered in Davenport, Scott, Iowa, US. On 25 December 1860, Charles first married Sarah Elizabeth Eldridge, born 3 May 1837, the first white girl born in Davenport, Scott, Iowa. There was a man, last name Coulton, who had a son with a Native American girl. They killed it because it was a half-breed. Sarah was d/o Duncan Campbell and Rebecca Lippincott Eldridge. Asher family legend says Sarah was quirky. She went to Delmar, Clinton, Iowa, to meet a man in a hotel. They found her dead with a bottle of Laudanum next to her after Charles left her -no divorce - he went to Silver Creek, Merrick, Nebraska, and married Phebe Jane Gardner Jones. Her 1st husband was Jonathan H. Jones, no bio info, born ca 1850, from death date info 5 April 1872 - 20 years old on cemetery marker. Jonathan married Phebe on 26 July 1863 in her father's home in Silver Creek. Jonathan is buried Fairview Cemetery in Silver Creek, Merrick, Nebraska. At the time, the couple was living in Platte County, Nebraska, possibly in Columbus, county seat. Find-a-Grave only has Charles' birth as Niagara County, NY. No date or location. Additional Comments: Charles, Phebe and family lived on a farm. He had a history of heart problems and would black out. He died from being burned in a field fire. His step-son tried to put out the flames with his jacket and only made the flames burn faster, as 14 yo George was dragging deceased Charles out of the fire. It is not known if he died from a heart attack or smoke inhalation, also severe burns. Only his shirt collar and boots were not burned.
