Brown buwbrown@comcast.net August 27, 2008, 2:46 pm Camden, June 21, 1908 Dear Daughter It has been some time since I have heard from you & I guess longer since you have heard from me but I think of you often & your family. I suppose they are getting allmost grown up now. It does not seem possible that Chester & Adalade are allmost grown. We are all as well as could be expected. I have a good deal of rheumatism in back & shoulders but perhaps am as well as I could expect as I shal be 76 years old this fall. May is getting dinner on a new oil stove. I dont suffere. We shall have mutch to eat now but we will keep cool. Dara & John are well, Uncle George is prety well. I saw Sam & Marieh a few days ago they were well. Cousin Miles (illegible word) has been up to Maria this last week. I have not seen him but George says he is not looking well has grown old fast since last summer. Some says his young wife does not take as good care of him as she ought to. Do you hear any thing from Spencers folks have heard he was very sick with cancer. I had a letter from George last week. He is haveing lots of trouble. I can hardly make out by his letter what it all is. He says Julia is in a bad way. Is she haveing trouble with her mind or is it only over the two deaths so sudden. Hope she will be better soon. We are having a good season here. Crops are looking well. Are haveing a great deal of thunder & lightning for the season. Was a man killed & a number of buildings burnt last week. Love to all. Write soon. Dont wait as long as I have. W I Upson Additional Comments: The letter is from Wilbert Ives Upson of Camden to his daughter-in-law, Lucina Jane (Upson) Upson, widow of his deceased son Wilbert. I have been able to identify other individuals mentioned as: May: May Newland, his step-daughter Sam and Marieh: Samuel & Maria (Upson) Scoville. Maria was Wilbert's first cousin. Miles Upson was Maria's brother. Spencer Upson was also Maria's brother. George was son of the writer, who died in Lanham, Gage Co., Neb., of typhoid fever a few months after this letter was written (Sept. 29, 1908). George's widow, Julia (Colon), returned to her home state of Missouri with her children.
