Brown buwbrown@comcast.net August 31, 2008, 9:54 am Pension Affidavit for Commissioned Officer or Comrade (undated): Pension claim of LaFayette Empey of Camden, New York. John Swanson deposes that Empey was a Sergeant in Co. E., 146th Regiment of N.Y.S. Volunteers. On or about June 2, 1864, at the Bertherday Church battle in the State of Virginia, was taken prisoner and carried to Richmond, thence to Andersonville Prison, where he remained until sometime in September, 1864, receiving nothing but a small quantity of corn meal at sometimes cooked at others raw, when he was removed and as deponent was informed taken to Florence Prison and the deponent next saw him at Wilmington, N.C. the last of February 1865, at which time said soldier was very weak and thin in flesh and hardly able to walk, and complained of piles and rheumatism, and has continued to complain of the same up to the present time, and deponent has heard him complain of the same frequently. That the sources and reasons of deponents knowledge are his intimate acquaintance with said soldier and the fact that deponent was taken prisoner and confined with him in said Andersonville Prison, where nearly all of said prisoners were suffering from diorhea (sic) and scurvy and said soldier resided in the same town (2 miles distant) with deponent for several years after the war and deponent saw said soldier and heard him complain of piles and rheumatism frequently and has seen him 3 or 4 times since he went west and at each time said soldier complained of suffering from piles and rheumatism. That said soldier never complained to deponent prior to his being taken to Andersonville Prison but was a strong healthy man at the time of going to prison. Deponent further states that the foregoing affidavit was all written in his presence at Camden, N.Y. on February 10, 1896, by Geo. J.
