Brown buwbrown@comcast.net August 25, 2008, 3:06 pm Pension W 18084 Dec. 15, 1829: Ashbel Upson, aged 67 and upwards, of Camden, Oneida Co., New York. Enlisted March 8, 1778 for 3 years in Plymouth, Litchfield Co., Connecticut; Capt. Jairus Wilcox's Co., Col. Jonathan Baldwin's Regt., Connecticut Line. Swrved for 2 years, and then honorably discharged upon his procuring a substitute (Obed Blakeslee) for the remainder of his term. Re- enlisted for 6 months in July 1781 in Plymouth; Capt. Nehemiah Royce, 5th Connecticut Regt.; served until January 1782 and was then discharged at West Point. He hereby relinquishes any claim to a pension except the present. He has not made an earlier application because he has been able to support himself and family. All his children have now left him and for the last six years increasing infirmity has prevented him from performing labor sufficient to support his family while his debts have been constantly accumulating until he has been compelled to dispose of his property, leaving but little to subsist on. Is afflicted with a painful disorder, and for five years and more has been unable to discharge his water except by an instrument. His wife of 64 years old and is a feeble woman, never having been of sound constitution since we were married. Full inventory included 14 acres of land, farm animals and tools, "a small machine for making broom handles," household goods and furniture, a loom, great and little wheels, etc. Total of inventory: $426.37, including debts owed to him of $35.00. Debts owed by him: $402.50. Dec. 24, 1829: Jesse & Polly Penfield (she a sister of the said Ashbel Upson) of Camden deposed that they had resided in Plymouth when Ashbel enlisted and served 2 years. He hired a substitute because of his own ill health. Dec. 24, 1829: Beriah Pond of Camden deposed that he knew Upson personally and had certain knowledge of the facts of his service as given in the pension application. Aug. 27, 1838: Salmon Humiston of Camden, aged 67, deposes that he is well acquainted with Mary Hungerford, formerly the wife of Ashbel Upson. Her maiden name was Mary Munson. The deponent was present at her marriage with the said Ashbel Upson, which took place in Harrington, Litchfield Co., Conn., the marriage having been performed by Abm. Catlin, Justice of the Peace of that town and took place in March, 1784. Apr. 10, 1843: application of Mary Hungerford of Camden, aged 77, widow of Joseph Hungerford and formerly widow of Ashbel Upson. Oct. 25, 1844: Mary Hungerford deposed that she married Ashbel Upson in 1784. He received a pension until June 30, 1831, the day of his death. She was afterwards married to Joseph Hungerford, who died December 15, 1834. Mar. 27, 1855: Mary Hungerford, aged 89, of Camden, New York, applied for the Bounty Land to which she is entitled under the Act of Congress approved March 3, 1855. She was formerly the widow of Ashbel Upson, who was an artificer in the Revolutionary Way; on account of the services of her husband she now receives a pension at the rate of $240. per annum.
