Hughes [of Utica, New York] Edwin M. Hughes 56, 105 Boyce Ave., died June 3, 1949 in a local hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Barneveld June 7, 1893, a son of the late Edwin and Mary Gouge Hughes. He was educated in Barneveld and Holland Patent schools and later attended Syracus University. Mr. Hughes had been associated with the paint and glass business for many years. He was manager of the W.J. Schoonover Glass Co. for the past 20 years has been a salesman for the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co., covering the northern part of the state. He was active in music circles and sang with several organizations in Utica during the past 30 years. He was bass soloist at Calvary Episcopal Church for 15 years. He was a member of Oriental Chorus and the Central Methodist Church choir. Mr. Hughes was a 32nd degree Mason, being a member of Remsen Lodge 677, F&AM of Barneveld, Ziyara Temple, and Mohawk Valley Consistory. He was a member of Central Methodist Church and tis [sic.] official board. On July 18, 1917 he married the former Esther C. Crosier of Utica who survives with a daughter, Mrs. Clarence A. Jordan, Newport, Vt., a son, Orval D. Hughes, Forestport, NY, and eight grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday from the home with interment in Crown Hill Memorial Gardens.
