OBITUARY Mrs. David F. Pierce Dead ––– Expires at Utica after illness of ten weeks ––– Husband Once Minister Here ––– Was Pastor of First Methodist Episcopal Church From 1902 to 1907 and Was Superintendent on the Black River District in 1916, 1917, 1918. ––– (Special to the Times) Mrs. Mattie A. Powers Pierce, 70, wife of Rev. Dr. David F. Pierce, retired minister and former resident of Watertown and Great Bend, died this morning at her residence, 107 Boyce Avenue, after an illness of ten weeks. * Surviving her, besides her husband, are two daughters, Mrs. Edmund [sic.] M. Hughes, Utica, and Mrs. John Kilpatrick, Glens Falls, a son, Robert M. Crosier, Syracuse and two grandchildren. ––– Mrs. David F. Pierce as well as her husband, was well known in this section where Dr. Pierce help pastorates of Methodist Episcopal Churches. From 1902 to 1907 he was pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church here. * For six years he was the district superintendent of the Mohawk District until April 10, 1916, when he was appointed district superintendent of the Black River district at a conference session held here. He held the superintendency of that district in 1916, 1917 and 1918. * Dr. and Mrs. Pierce resided in Watertown for several years until 1920 when Dr. Pierce consented to take over the pastorate of the Woolworth Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church of Great Bend to succeed Rev. J.S. Eldridge, who resigned. He served as supply pastor of that church for two years and in April, 1933, he and Mrs. Pierce moved to Rome. * Additional Comments: My note: Mrs. Martha A. POWERS CROSIER PIERCE b. July 7, 1865 in Williamstown, MA [Massachusetts], was my maternal great grandmother and lived in Rutland, VT [Vermont] and died in New York.
