Johnson occurred at her home, 110 Huntington street on Saturday evening. Just one month before she had fallen from a stairway in the back part of the house and sustained a broken hip. While confined to the bed with this injury pneumonia set in and during the last week she failed rapidly until the end, which came very peacefully. Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of Daniel and Zilpha (Britton) Shelley, who were of Pilgrim and Puritan stock, and migrated from Connecticut in 1816 to the valley of the Geneseo. It was at Geneseo, Livingston county, that the deceased was born May 9, 1819. The greater part of her active life was spent in teaching, her last position being as principal of the Akiu street school in Utica, where she remained for over 20 years. Other places where she had taught were Oneida Castle, Chittenango, Vernon and in this city. Here she taught in the Liberty street school under the late Prof. M. W. Smith, afterward school commissioner for this district. Her husband, Harvey Johnson, died about 40 years ago. For the last 15 years Mrs. Johnson has made Rome her home. Since early girlhood she had been connected with Baptist denomination and had been a member of the First Baptist Church during her residence in this city. In her nature she was self- reliant and brave, while her unselfishness made her ever thoughtful of the welfare of others. As daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend she was ever faithful and sincere in her desire to do her best. She is survived by one daughter, Miss Georgiana Johnson, one brother, Henry S. Shelley, and one sister, Mrs. George F. Hodges, all of this city. There is a large circle of nieces, nephews and other relatives who will greatly miss her. She was a sister of the late Edward H., William O. and A. Judson Shelley. Two sons had died, William Smith Johnson in early manhood, and Edward Henry in his infancy. The funeral was held at two o’clock this afternoon from her late residence. Rev. H. H. Peabody, D. D., officiating. Interment was made in Rome Cemetery. The bearers were W. H. Chapin, A. F. Nash, J. J. Bundy and A. H. Wright.
