Rome Sentinel October 13, 1904
New York Mills: Gabriel Merklinger, aged 81, died yesterday. He was born in 
Germany and came to America when he was 11 yrs of age. His early life was spent 
in the northern part of NYS where he was engaged in farming and where in 1854, 
he married Miss Sophia Leclydner. Twenty-five yrs ago the family came to New 
York Mills. During his residence here he was employed by Walcott & Campbell. He 
was a very industrious hard working man and a careful competent workman, having 
the respect of the entire community. He is survived by his wife and seven 
children, Lewis, John, Mrs. Gus Mowers and Mrs. Bertha Wallace of New York 
Mills, George of Albany, Mrs. Lydia Gleasman of Ava, and Bert, who is employed 
at the State Hospital.
