New York Mills: The death of Sophia Lacklydner, widow of Gabriel Merklinger, 
occurred at the home of her son, No. 15 Porter Street, yesterday. Mrs. 
Merklinger had been ill for some time and he death was not unexpected. Sophia 
Lacklydner was born in Germany and came to American when she was 9 yrs of age. 
The family lived first in New London where Sophia married Gabriel Merklinger 58 
yrs ago. They went from New London to West Leyden, coming to New York Mills 
from West Leyden 32 yrs ago. Mr. Merklinger died here 7 yrs ago. When her 
health permitted Mrs. Merklinger attended the Presbyterian Church. She was the 
mother of a large family and was devoted to her home. Last Friday she 
celebrated her birthday anniversary and although confined to her bed, neighbors 
and friends enjoyed a pleasant visit with her. She is survived by six children, 
Mrs. Gus Mowers of Clockville, Mrs. Lydia Gleasman of Ava, Mrs. Bertha Meyers 
of Buffalo, George Merklinger of Utica and John & Burton Merklinger of New York 
Mills. She also leaves 29 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
