Upson. a well-known and respected citizen, died Tuesday night at the home of his daughter - Family first came to town in 1807. The death of Mr. Wilbert I. Upson occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.J. Davis, on the Florence Hill road, Tuesday night at 9 o'clock. Mr. Upson had been in poor health from heart trouble for some time and had been gradually failing for the past six weeks. The Upson family have been prominent in Camden for many years. Ashbel Upson, grandfather of the deceased, came from Plymouth, Conn., in 1807, returned, and a year later coming with three yoke of oxen and three horses and a family of eight children, and located on the farm occupied by W.J. Parke on the Seventh. The Upson family were among the organizers of the Congregational church and Mr. Ashbel Upson was made a deacon. There was a deacon Upson in the church until the death of Lent Upson in 1870. Deacon Upson and his brother Jesse served in the Revolutionary War and were two years under Capt. Wilcox and Col. Baldwin. He was with the company that helped to fortify West Point in 1777. In the year 1838, Ashbel Upson, Jr., father of the deceased, purchased the farm now the home of John J. Davis. Mr. Wilbert I. Upson was united in marriage to Louisa K. Empey June 14, 1854, and took up their residence there, where he lived until the death of Mrs. Upson March 23, 1868. There were five children born to them, two of whom survive. In 1888, Mr. Upson married Sarah Newland, widow of the late Josiah Newland. She died in 1902 and since that time Mr. Upson has made his home with his step- daughter, Miss May Newland, at the Newland homestead until about two weeks ago when he went to live with his daughter, Mrs. J.J. Davis. Mr. Upson is survived by one brother, George E. Upson of Camden, one son, Fletcher Upson of Oberlin, Kansas, and a daughter, Mrs. J.J. Davis of Camden. The funeral will be held from the home of his daughter Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. R.L. Rae will be the officiating clergyman and the bearers will be W.S. Peck, J.N. Nichols, W.I. Stoddard and John Warren. Mr. Upson had been a life-long resident of Camden, was well liked by a large circle of friends and will be greatly missed.
