Obituary of John H. Wilcox Died Feb 12, 1869. Born in Groton, Connecticut. At an early age he came with his parents to New York. At about 1832 he settled with his family in Rome and here he passed the remainder of his life.  He was a farmer by occupation and of choice, in his employment he felt a laudable pride.  He appreciated nature, perceived its beauties and his soul enjoyed its elevating? influence.   Thrift accompanied his mediating? or indicating? influence and was won by his mature judgment and refingh? character and an honorable foresight? was by him obtained, his counsel sought and the business of others was committed to his care and this fact secure? who referred? in him. His home attracted attention by the order, neatness and beauty that appeared. Everything observed that a model farmer was at its head while the eye was pleased, the taste was gratified. For several years he was Pres. & Treas. of the Rome Cheese Mfg. Society which greatly prospered under his supervision in 1867. He was chosen vice pres. and in 1868 he was elected to Pres. of the Oneida Co. Agricultural Society the members of which feel deeply his loss. But it was in his own family he was best known and loved. From his youth he had been a disciple of his Saviour, and always honored him by public confession. His religion was felt in his relations as husband, parent and friend and by these relations is deeply deplored? while his religion was never obtrusive it was seldom absent in his intercourse? of life. The Baptist Church of which he was a Member and for many years a Trustee will seriously miss his cheerful presence, wise counsel and liberal support. Seldom was he absent from the Sanctuary on the Sabbath and while death came to him suddenly, it found him prepared. He knew in whom he believed and felt that he was safe in His hands while he mourned the deficiences in his life his whole trust was in the merits of the Saviour. His end was peace. Those who loved him in life showed him respect at his death and all felt that a great loss was sustained.
