Williams, IHS Alumnus, age 87, of 98 Harrogate Road, New Hartford, [NY] formerly of Ilion, [NY] passed away Monday, December 9, 2002, at the Presbyterian Home. He was born May 22, 1915, in Poultney, VT. The son of the late Thomas James and Mary Elizabeth (Owens) Williams. Matt was educated in the Ilion School System and played on the 1935 Championship football team, he then attended college at his Alma Mater Northeastern University at Boston, where he was also a member of the football team. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the Army Air Corp., where for 5 years he was stationed in the Galapagos Islands, a place he became extremely fond of. On July 31, 1948, he married the former Helen Milstead. She passed away on September 30, 1998. Matt was employed as a design draftsman with General Electric in Utica, retiring in 1977. Mr. Williams was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ilion, where he also served as Deacon, Elder and Trustee and was in charge of the Men's Breakfast Club. Matt wa! s also a volunteer for the Mohawk Valley General Hospital for 5 years, delivered Meals on Wheels, and was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Ilion American Legion Post 920, a member of the Ilion-Frankfort VFW Post 502, a life member of the Ilion Elks Lodge 1444, and a life member of the St. David's society. Matt enjoyed Syracuse University sports and was an avid New York Yankees fan. He was a jazz buff and spent many hours studying art in the local library's. Mr. Williams is survived by a sister, Dr. Ann L. Williams of New Hartford, with whom he resided for the past five years; two special nephews, Russell and Judd Finegan. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Lana Williams of Utica, and several other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Norman, Hayden, and Clifford, and three sisters, Ellen Brown, Edna Gorney, and Mary Connor. Funeral services for Mr. Williams will be Friday, December 13, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, Secon! d Street, Ilion, with Rev. Victor McKusick officiating. Interment will be in the Armory Hill Cemetery in the spring. Friends may call Thursday from 2-5 p.m. at the Whiter-Henrix Funeral Home, 100 Otsego Street, Ilion. Friends are asked to consider Memorials to the Ilion Library, or the First Presbyterian Church, Ilion. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Matt's family would like to thank the 4th floor staff of the Faxton Hospital, especially Chris and Dr. Gasparovich for the excellent care provided during his stay and also a thank you to the staff at the Presbyterian Home.
