August 16, 2004 Richard A. "Dick" Allen, 77, of North Syracuse, died on Monday at Birchwood Health Care Center. A native of Syracuse, he attended Syracuse University and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He retired on July 1, 1989 after 27 years from the Postal Service, where he had been a carrier from the Colvin Station. He had previously worked for Crouse Hinds and General Electric. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, the former Joan M. Wunderlich; a daughter, Julie (Michael) Germano of Arlington, Washington; three sons, David (Dianne) Allen of North Syracuse, Philip (Lisa) Allen of Coral Springs, Florida, and James Allen of Baldwinsville; five grandchildren, Danielle, Tim, Dude, Jenny and Reese; and his brother William Allen of New Woodstock. Her husband Leonard died in 1982 and she was predeceased by her son James and his family in 1979. After marrying Robert L. Dartt of Bethlehem, PA, Nina taught high school Home Economics in Selma, CA, Carlisle, PA and Roselle, NJ. While raising her family in Cedar Grove, NJ, she volunteered with the P.T.A. and Congregational Church and managed a home tutorial service. After retiring as a senior clerk-typist from Montclair State College in 1986, she moved to Madison, WI and helped raise her three grandsons. In 1998, she moved to NY to live with her daughter. A kind and considerate person, she touched the spirits of all who knew her. Born in Chicago, IL, she was raised on Long Island and settled in Syracuse in 1951. She was a graduate of Sawanaka High School and a graduate of The Berkely School. Dorothy worked for Syracuse University and Onondaga Community College as an administrative assistant for 25 years. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Walter "Bud" Ellison. Together they enjoyed their family, friends and their canine companions, spending summers boating in the Thousand Islands and winters skiing. Survived by a brother Paul H. Gillen of Cutchogue, L.I. and a sister Nancy Maher of Greenfield, WI; sons, Richard D. Ellison (Laurie) of Minoa, Jeffery C. Komanecky, James August 16, 2004 James Komanecky, of Camillus, died on Monday at home after waging a courageous five-year battle with pulmonary lung fibrosis. A native of Auburn, New York, Jim graduated from the former West High School and served five years in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from the former Auburn Community College and SUNY at Oswego with a M.S. in Elementary Education. He completed graduate work at SUNY Oswego and Syracuse University. Until his retirement in 1997, Jim was employed by the Westhill School District for 32 years as an elementary teacher and guidance counselor. He also served as Director of Super Summer, a program for children with special needs sponsored by the City-County Youth Board. Over the years, many former students have acknowledged the impact Jim had on them, with some choosing teaching as a profession because of his influence. Over the past five years, Jim traveled to Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in NYC and later Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY, to take part in a study researching a new drug treatment. Although recent tests indicated that he was entering the final stage of his disease, he chose to remain in the study in the hope that his continued participation might benefit others in the future. Throughout his illness, Jim maintained the same sense of humor that he was known for all his life. The family's dogs, Tia Maria, Nikkos, Caesar and Dante, provided him with much love and comfort during his struggle with this disease. Jim is survived by his wife of 38 years, Evelyn "Evie" (Piedimonte) Komanecky; a son, David James Komanecky of Syracuse; a daughter, Jennifer Ann Komanecky of Liverpool; his mother-in-law, Maria Piedimonte; a brother, William Komanecky of Cayuga; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. S., Lyncourt, died Sunday at the Crossings Nursing Home. She was born in Ostdorf, Germany and came to Syracuse in 1923. She was employed for 37 years with L. C. Smith Corona Typewriter Company, retiring in 1972. Her husband, Arlington, died in 1977. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Services: 1 p.m. Thursday at Gang Memorial Chapel. Romano, Josephine (Marnell) Romano August 17, 2004 Josephine (Marnell) Romano, age 88, life-resident of Syracuse, passed away Tuesday at Community General Hospital. Her husband, John, passed away in 1995. She is survived by a son, Michael A. Romano of Syracuse; a granddaughter, JenniferRomano; a sister, Marie (Michael) Longo of Syracuse, also several nieces and nephews. Published in the Syracuse Post Standard on 8/18/2004. Stevens, Alice Mae July 30, 2004 Alice Mae Stevens of 1950 Shipley Road, Cookeville, Tennessee, died on July 30, 2004 at her home. She was born on February 10, 1928 in Syracuse, New York to the late Thomas and Clara May Whittenberg Kerlin. Ms. Stevens lived most of her life in the Syracuse area. She moved to Cookeville, TN after retiring from teaching at Marcellus Central Schools for over 25 years. Ms. Stevens was an avid reader and volunteered her time teaching to others how to read. In 1995, she received the Putnam County Adult Literacy Volunteer of the Year Award. Ms. Stevens is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Dave Fine of Manlius, New York, Shirley and Bob Seabury of Fulton, New York and Betsy and Mike Oliver of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Mary Elizabeth Stevens of Cookeville, Tennessee and Tom and Chris Stevens of Shaker Heights, Ohio; and 16 loving grandchildren. Yemma, Frank Florian August 15, 2004 Frank Florian Yemma, 81, of Vero Beach, Florida, died Sunday. Born in Syracuse, Mr. Yemma lived in Florida since 1972. He retired from the Syracuse Fire Department after 20 years and he also retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Vero Beach after 10 years. Frank was a veteran of WWII Marines 9th Battalion; he was a member of the Elks Lodge #1520 and the Jack Ivey Marine Corps League. He was past president of the Fire Fighter Union Local #280. Survivors: his daughter, Rosemarie (Ron) Carioggia of Baldwinsville; brother, Joseph Yemma of Syracuse; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
