Born May 4, 1918, in Oswego, she was the daughter of the late William and Lucy (Crump) Goodness. She was married for over 45 years to the late Richard N. Acker Sr. Dorothy retired from Prowda's Little Shop in Fulton. Surviving are her six children, William M. Acker and fiancee' Peggy Clark, U. Grant (Suzanne) Place, Lee R. (Suellen) Acker, Richard N. (Karen) Acker, all of Fulton, Dana M. (Rachael) Acker of Roxbury, MA, and Victor F. (AnneMarie) Acker of South Weymouth, MA; 23 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. Originally from a family of 10 children, only two sisters survive, Jeanette (Robert) Bullock of Columbus, OH, and Bethel (George) Thompson of Utica; several nieces, nephews and many good friends. Dorothy was predeceased by brothers, Kenneth, Leon, Francis, Pascal and William Goodness; sisters, Clarise Bushnell and Lila Schmitt. Effler M.D., Donald Brian August 24, 2004 Donald Brian Effler, M.D., 89, of Fayetteville, died Tuesday following a long illness. Born on Blackwells Island, New York, he had lived in Fayetteville for the past 29 years. Dr. Effler was a 1937 graduate of the University of Michigan where he also at-tained his medical degree in 1941. Dr. Effler was Chief Cardiac Surgeon at St. Joseph's Hospital from 1976 to 1985. From 1949 to 1975, he served as the Chief of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. He was a member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the American College of Surgeons, the American Surgical Association, the International Cardiovascular Society and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He served on the Board of Governors and the Board of Trustees (Emeritus) for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He had served on the Advisory Editorial Board for the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, the Editorial Board of Consulates for the American Journal of Cardiology, and was past president of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons from 1969-1970. Dr. Effler edited the acclaimed textbook "Blades Surgical Diseases of the Chest", and has written over 400 articles on thoracic surgery in various journals. He is survived by his wife, Joanna; his daughter, Gretchen Freidman of Chicago; his sons, Donald B. of New York City and Brian D. of Loveland, CO; his sister, Doris Machen of Minnesota; and six grandchildren. He was a lifetime resident of the Syracuse area. He was employed by Bender Ford Trucks and was formerly employed by Reynolds Ford, Koerner Ford, E. Syracuse and Salina Chevrolet. He was a Marine Corps veteran of WW II, having served in the First Marine Division, "The Old Breed," throughout the Asiatic Pacific area, including New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, Australia, New Guinea and Cape Gloucester. He was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and was a member of the VFW. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, the former Elizabeth A. McCarthy; daughters, Mary Stuhler of VA, Ellen Doupe of SC, and Theresa Jones of Fulton; son William J.
