August 14, 2004 George E. Abbott, 79, of Eastham, MA, formerly of Syracuse, died August 14 at Cape Cod Hospital from complications due to pancreatic cancer. He was married to Rosemary J. Abbott for 58 years. They moved from Syracuse to Eastham in 1974. Mr. Abbott was a longtime advocate of historical preservation and had been an active civic leader in Eastham for more than 20 years. He was born in Salem, MA, attended Salem schools and graduated from Dean Academy, Franklin, MA, and Syracuse University. Mr. Abbott was very proud of his World War II military service as an Army combat engineer in the European Theater, receiving a commendation and Purple Heart for injuries received when his combat unit landed with Allied forces at Utah Beach on D-Day, 1944. He remained in the Army National Guard for almost 30 years, retiring as a chief warrant officer. Mr. Abbott worked for the National Guard in Syracuse before becoming administrative assistant to the dean in the SU School of Engineering. He later became SU's Director of Career Services. Upon his move to Cape Cod, he began a second career working for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department Of Education and Training. He retired at age 70 in 1995. He was active in the Unitarian Church his entire life and was president of the congregation at May Memorial Unitarian Society when the present church was proposed and constructed on East Genesee Street. Surviving in addition to his wife is one daughter, Deborah J. Abbott and her partner, William R. Smith of Eastham; two sons, James F. Abbott and his partner, Victoria Vaughn of Santa Cruz, CA, and George E. Abbott Jr. and his wife Susan of New Brighton, MN; one brother, William F. Abbott of Westport, CT; two grandchildren, Kieran Abbott of New Brighton and Nickolas Abbott of Santa Cruz; and a niece and nephew of Westport, CT. Dorothy was a former member of Temple Society of Concord, a member of Temple Adath Yeshurun and the Sisterhood, the Seniors Group at the JCC, and theAuxiliary of the Jewish Home of CNY. In 1974, at the age of 57, Dorothy graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in Human Development, and Art. Besides her love of traveling the world, Dorothy was an expert gardener. She was a member of the Rose Society and won numerous awards for her roses, including ribbons at the NYS Fair. Dorothy was predeceased by her Husband Irving; daughter, Marcia Greenwald; and grandson, David Greenwald all in 1994. Her brothers, Bernard died in 1960, and Earl in 2001. Catalano, Sarah "Sally" August 27, 2004 Sarah "Sally" DeMauro Catalano, 79, of Oneida, passed away unexpectedly Friday, August 27, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica. She was born March 15, 1925, in Canastota, the daughter of the late Peter and Concetta Russo DeMauroand was a 1943 graduate of Canastota High School. On October 5, 1946, at St. Agatha's Church, Canastota, she married Philip T. Catalano, a loving union of over 57 years. Prior to raising her family, Mrs. Catalano was employed with Oneida Limited and General Electric. Mrs. Catalano was a well-known cakemaker and decorator. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Oneida, served on its bereavement committee, was a Eucharistic minister, was a member and past president of Altar Roasary Society and was a former religious education instructor. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters, the Adoration Society, Canastota Senior Citizens, the Canastota Card Club and was an active member of the AARP. Mrs. Catalano was a volunteer with the Oneida Health Care Center and was a former member and officer of the PTA. Mrs. Catalano was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her husband Philip; seven children and their spouses: Sam and Kathy Catalano of Cornelius, NC; Pete and Kelly Catalano of Oneida; Betsy Hauswirth of East Syracuse; Barbara and Tim Stevenson of East Syracuse; Philip Jr and Paula Catalano of Manlius; Marianne and Jesper Widen of Irvine, CA; and Tom and Carrie Catalano of Pittsburgh, PA; one brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Madge DeMauro of Canastota; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was born in Erie, PA, 96 years ago, moved to Mexico, NY, and resided there until she married Frederic J. Collin in 1935. Corleen graduated from Oswego Normal School with a teaching certificate. She was a dedicated teacher for more than 30 years in the New Woodstock and West Genesee school districts. She is survived by her only son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Collin of Denton, TX; her elder granddaughter, Patricia Howarth of Garland, TX, and her younger granddaughter, Kathleen Partridge of Wichita Falls, TX; four great-grandchildren; her sister, Mrs. F.A. Crossett, Alice "Ruth" August 28, 2004 Alice "Ruth" Crossett, 94, life resident of Orwell, died Saturday at Oswego Hospital. She was born in Orwell on June 26, 1910, the daughter of Foster and Anna Cobb Thomas. She attended Orwell schools and graduated from Pulaski High School in 1929 and Crouse Irving School of Nursing in 1932. She married Asa Crossett on June 6, 1936. He died on Sept. 13, 1967. She was employed at the Oswego County Tuberculosis Sanitorium, Richland, from 1934 until its closing in 1958, her last 10 years as charge nurse. She also was employed by Evergreen Nursing Home in Mannsville, employed by Dr. Warren Hollis in Sandy Creek and was a private duty nurse for many years. She was a charter member of Oswego County Halfshire Historical Society in Richland, an active member of the Oswego County Retired Senior Volunteer Program, a 50-year member of Ricard Grange #998 and a member of Dalked Class of Orwell Methodist Church. Surviving are one sister, Arline C. Clifford of Orwell; one nephew Elmer K. Coyer of Sandy Creek; and several nieces. She was predeceased by one sister, Emma Bellinger, and three brothers: George, Lacy and Carl. Feil, Beatrice I. Wright August 28, 2004 Beatrice I. Wright Feil, 90, of Syracuse, died Saturday at Birchwood Health Care Center. She was born in Perry, NY, and resided in Syracuse most of her life. Mrs. Feil had worked for the Community Chest and in the accounting department ofthe YMCA. She was a former member of the Pastime Athletic Club, was an avid bowler in several leagues and also enjoyed golfing. Her husband of 52 years, Francis A. "Frank" Feil, predeceased her on January 25, 2001. A brother, George, was declared missing in action during WWII and a sister, Lillian Yost, predeceased her on March 17, 1994. Fellows, native Syracusan and longtime Fayetteville resident, passed away on August 15, 2004 in Port St. Lucie, Florida at the age of 86. Born on July 30, 1918 to Harry Lawrence Fellows and Nellie O'Driscoll Fellows, he is survived by histhree daughters, Darcy Fellows Todia of Houston, Texas, Judith Fellows Froehlich of Loveland, Ohio and Lucy Llewellen Fellows of Columbia, South Carolina. He has three grandchildren, Jaime Todia Wooten of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Melissa Froehlich of Washington, D. C. and J. Rhys Todia of Solon, Ohio. His sister, Mary Jane Fellows Lasher, lives in Hobe Sound, Florida and his brother, Gary Lawrence Fellows, in Sumpterville, Florida. Driscoll, called Dick by many, graduated from Nottingham High School on Fellows Avenue in 1938 lettering in football, baseball, lacrosse and ice hockey. He graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1942. He was selected by "Esquire Magazine" as the "Best Dressed Man on Campus" the same year. Dick distinguished himself in athletics, playing lacrosse and left guard on the varsity football team. A member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and the Orange Pack, he remained a supporter of the University. After graduation, Dick entered military service and was selected for the Army Survival Swimming Team to make training films in Silver Springs, Florida. A year later he entered Robertson Aeronautical School in St. Louis, Missouri to complete pilot's training. March 11, 1945, Lieutenant Fellows received his wings flying B24s at Pampa Army Air Field in Texas. He married Syracuse graduate, Doris Price from Mountainhome, Pennsylvania on March 13, 1945. After World War II, Dick started D. H. Fellows Construction Company to build his first house. He continued building houses in Fayetteville, New York and within a few years, focused on commercial buildings. Some of the buildings his company constructed include the original Mohawk (now U.S. Air) concourse and the second story of the American Airlines concourse at Syracuse Regional Airport. He built many projects for the State of New York including 3 field houses for S.U.N.Y. at Oswego, Brockport and Cortland and agricultural barns at Cornell University. His company built the Methodist Church in Fayetteville, a H.U.D. home for the elderly in Manlius, dorms and an athletic building at Cazenovia College, a shopping center in Chittenango and a school in Pulaski along with many other buildings and road projects. Known for the efficiency and quality of his work, his most notable accomplishment was the construction of the new bridge on Freemont Road over the railroad yards one and one half years ahead of schedule. This unheard of feat, published in Fortune Magazine, allowed school buses to take children to school without an extremely long detour around the rail yards. An avid boater, outdoorsman and hunter, Dick spent his summers at the 1000 Islands, Lake Ontario and in the Adirondack Mountains where he was President of Five Mile Fish and Game for several years. Fetters, 76, of Syracuse, passed away on August 21, 2004, at Community General Hospital. Born, raised, and educated in Illinois, Samuel Fetters was a professor of law for over 30 years. Professor Fetters taught at Syracuse UniversityLaw School for 26 years where he was the Crandall Melvin Chair in Trusts and Estates. Professor Fetters is survived by three daughters, Deborah Fetters of Altadena, CA, Tracy Fetters of San Francisco and Kim Fetters of Syracuse; and her husband, Eric Prager; one sister, Eleanor Espensen of Santa Monica, California. Bennett and Estella Palen Bennett. She was a life member of Leavenworth Central School alumni, a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and the women of St. Stephen's of Wolcott. Isabelle operated a boarding house in Mexico with her husband John until his death in 1965. She carried on until she retired in 1982 and moved to Red Creek. She was predeceased by her husband John F. Gardiner in 1965; siblings: Esther Acome, Ruth Larkin and Verne Bennett. Isabelle is survived by her sister-in-law Helen Fellows and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Manning, Patrick Lewis August 26, 2004 Patrick Lewis Manning, 50, of Mattydale, passed away Thursday at University Hospital from injuries sustained from a fall on Tuesday. A native of Tacoma, WA, Pat resided in Mattydale for 23 years, where he was employed as an auto mechanic for thepast 15 years at T. Sprague's Auto in Mattydale. He was also an Army veteran in the early 1970s. Pat loved cars and was an avid racer at ESTA Safety Park until 1995 when he discovered Street Roding. He was heavily involved with the CNY Street Rods. His passion for Street Rods led him to be instrumental in building and working on many cars of his friends and his own, including his 1940 Ford pickup truck and his 1931 Pontiac sedan. Surviving are two daughters, Andrea J. of Liverpool and Anita M. of Mattydale; his former wife of 22 years, Margo L. Manning; a sister, Michelle Ellison of London, KY; his fiancee, Susan C. She left behind John Eaton, whom was sent from God to care for her. Her husband, Albert McClary died six years ago. She left a family that loved her dearly. She graduated from high school in Syracuse in 1922. She also lived in Florida, Hawaii and Illinois before moving to Pulaski in 1970. She was last employed at the YWCA in Syracuse for several years, retiring in 1970. She was a member of the Pulaski Baptist Church and the Pulaski Historical Society. Born in Nuremberg, Germany, on November 22, 1925, he immigrated to the United States in 1940. He served inthe U.S. Army from 1944-1946. A graduate of Syracuse University, he was employed by General Electric for 41 years, first in Syracuse, NY, until 1975 and then in Pittsfield until his retirement in 1991. He married his wife, the former Margot Lersy, in 1975. His first wife, Lilo Seidenberger, died in 1971.
