Bench, Howard E. December 6, 2004 Howard E. Bench, 90, of Liverpool, died Monday at Community General Hospital after a brief illness. Howard was born in Syracuse to Grace (Schaefer) and Howard H. Bench, on August 19, 1914. He spent most of his life on the North Side until moving to the Valley in 1967 and Liverpool in 1998. He graduated in the first high school graduation class of Assumption Catholic Academy in 1933. He was predeceased by his son, James Bench. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Catherine (Schloeder) Bench; sons, David (Sherry) Bench of Cary, NC, Ken Bench of Pontoon Beach, IL, Donald (Katy) Bench of Rochester, NY; daughter-in-law, Linda (Proctor) Bench of Liverpool and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Howard retired in August 1976 after 31 years with the Syracuse Police Department. He was a member of the Syracuse Police Benevolent Association, the Syracuse Police Retirees Association and the Pastime Athletic Club. He was a past member of the Anglers Association of Onondaga, the Knights of St. John and the Third Ward Republican Men's Club. In the early 1950's, he led and instructed District 4 Civil Defense Auxiliary Police. Howard enjoyed sports and pitched for the Syracuse Arrows baseball team in the early 1930's. He was an avid bowler and bowled in the Pastime Club House League and the Greater Syracuse League. Funeral services 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Assumption Church. Louis "Boppie" was born in Syracuse and was a graduated of Most Holy Rosary. Louis was a WW II veteran and was captured at theBattle of The Bulge. "Siggy" Brzostowski, 57, of LaFayette, died Saturday at University Hospital. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, LaFayette. Siggy retired from New Process Gear in 2004 as a forklift operator following 33 years of ser-vice. He was a member of the UAW #624, Syracuse, NY. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving two tours of duty in Vietnam; he was a green beret serving with the special forces. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was predeceased by a sister Rebecca Brzostowski who died in 1965. Croucher, Leslie December 6, 2004 Leslie Croucher, 91, of 4 Burkle Street, Oswego, died in the Oswego Hospital after a short illness. Mr. Croucher was born in Oswego and had been a resident of Florida for 21 years before moving back to Oswego two months ago. Mr. Croucher was employed on the Oswego Muck Farms, and with A. C. Hall Bakery. He later worked for General Electric in Syracuse where he retired as a technician. Mr. Croucher is survived by his wife Anna Croucher of Oswego; two sons, Thomas (Sonia) Perry of Indiana, Lawrence Croucher of Oswego; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. December 5, 2004 Audrey V. (Morse) Etz, 72, of Tully, died Sunday at St. Joseph's Hospital, following a long illness. Born in Tully, Mrs. Etz lived in Nedrow for 40 years before moving back to Tully nine years ago. She was a graduate of Tully High School, University of Rochester School of Nursing, received her Bachelor's degree from SUNY Utica/Rome, and her Master's degree from Syracuse University. She retired from Community General Hospital in 1995 as a nurse practitioner following 28 years of service. She was predeceased by her parents, Paul and Agnes Morse. Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Harold E. "Harry" Etz; five children and spouses, Paul E. and Suzanne Etz of Pulaski, Thomas R. and Kristen Etz of Austin, TX, David E. and Mary Etz of Cortland, Mary Ellen and Tim Fowler of Mt. A native of Dawson, PA, she was a graduate of Connellsville High School and a 1925 graduate of Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing. She retired in 1973 as a registered nurse having lived in the Philadelphia area, Washington, D.C., Florida, and since 1973, Centerville Court, North Syracuse. Mrs. Jones loved life, family, politics, Lawrence Welk and a good dinner. She was predeceased by her husbands Henry Ickes and William Jones. Surviving are her daughter Sally Harrington of Baldwinsville; three grandsons, Chris, Bruce and John Harrington; and six great-grandchildren, Anthony, Kelly, Heather, Morgan, Alexi and Serina. Born in Englewood New Jersey, he graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in Engineering and retired as Chief Water Systems Engineer for the Metropolitan Water Board of Onon-daga County. He was also past vice president of, R.L Vogel, Inc., in western New York. Mr. Lieneck was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. As an Army Air Force Veteran of World War II, Mr. Lieneck was a B-24 pilot with the Flying Tigers under General Chenault, serving in both China and India and earning the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal and the Chinese Pilot Wings. He was a member of the Hump Pilot's Association in affiliation with the Flying Tigers and of VFW Post #153. Mr. Lieneck is predeceased by his wife Arlene, who died in 1996. He is survived by a son, Walter C. Lieneck of Buffalo; daughters, Kathryn L. Derrick of Liverpool and Tracy E. Baron of Flower Mound, TX; six grandsons. Potter, 74, of Brewerton Rd., Cicero, died peacefully Monday at his home with his family by his side. Bob was the son of the late Edward J. and Arlene W. Potter, and was a life resident of Cicero. He graduated from North Syracuse HighSchool in 1948 and Morrisville College in 1950. He was a longtime member and past Trustee of the Cicero United Methodist Church. He worked the 350-acre family farm, milking 125 head of Holstein cattle and 48 head of White Faced Herefords. With Interstate 81 going through the center of the farm, the cattle were sold off at an auction. After his father passed away, Robert went to Syracuse University to get his insurance license. He took over his dad's insurance business which was started in 1925, and ran it out of his mother's home until 1961. With his father's passing, Robert took his position as a director of Cayuga County Patrons Insurance Co-op in Auburn, now known as Midstate Mutual Insurance Co. He also served as a director of Madison Mutual Co-op Insurance Co. of Chittenango, and was currently vice president. Mr. Potter was instrumental in starting the Town of Cicero Fire Prevention Board in 1962 and held the chairmanship of the board until 1992 and was still serving on the board. In 1968 an Olympic size inside swimming pool was built on Rte. 11 in Cicero and was known as the Aquatic Club. Mr. Potter and four men catered to nursery school age children, swimming lessons were given, and from 1968-1974 over 38,000 children learned to swim. For several years the Cicero and North Syracuse High Schools used the pool for their joint swim team, and during the summer the Town of Cicero used the pool for the summer community swim lessons. Along with the swimming lessons, a nursery school had to close in 1974. In 1992, with the help of 12 men, the Cicero Bank was established. Mr. Potter, along with other businessmen, thought it would be an asset to the community to have a "Home Town" Bank. Cicero Bank was the first new bank in New York State to make money in the first year of business. He was a 56-year member of the Cicero Volunteer Fire Department, four of which he served as Chief. Robert and his wife started collecting antique fire equipment and now have five motorized trucks, and three horse-drawn fire vehicles. One of the horse-drawn vehicles was an 1873 Silsby Steamer and held a respected spot in the lobby of his insurance office building. They also have created a museum housing several hundred items of early fire memorabilia dating back to the early 1800's. They are life members of Society for Apparatus in America and he was national president. Mr. Potter insured volunteer fire departments and ambulance corps across New York state. He represented over 100 fire departments and ambulance corps. He was also chairman of the Onondaga Fire Advisory Board, active in the Onondaga Firemen's Assoc., Onondaga County Fire Chiefs Assoc., past president of North Syracuse Kiwanis Club, charter member of the Cicero Chamber of Commerce. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Harriett E.; a son and daughter-in-law, B. Jay and Janice Potter of Cicero; a sister, Eleanor Lurcock of Cicero; and a granddaughter, Rhiannon. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Cicero United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Pine Plains Cemetery in Clay. Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale. Born in Fitchburg, MA, and retired after 32 years from Crouse Hinds in 1982. He was a U.S. Army WWII veteran, Thunderbirds 45th infantry division. He also coached Babe Ruth little league for over 25 years in E. Syracuse, was the commander of the VFW James F. Ray Post #3352, and a member of the LaPieta prayer group. Survivors: two sisters, Marguerite Berube of NH, and Sister Mary Francis of NH; one brother, Fabien Robichaud of Syracuse; two granddaughters, Joelle Scheurer of Liverpool and Christina Robichaud of New Woodstock; one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews. Wilczek, 69, of King St., Port Byron, died at her home following an extended illness. Mrs. Wilczek was born in Geneva, NY, the daughter of Dominick and Rose Marie Gullinese Gaglianese, and had worked as a bus aide for Bernie Bus Services in Port Byron. She loved arts and crafts and will be fondly remembered as "Rosie the Ripper" for her diligent crocheting. She was predeceased by her husband Louis J. Wilczek in 1994. Survived by four children, Kim Ward and her fiance Bud of Syracuse, JoAnn Gerrigan and her husband James of Port Byron, Stephen Wilczek and his wife Laura of Weedsport, James Wilczek and his wife Phyllis of Weedsport; 11 grandchildren; a brother, Anthony Gaglianese and his wife Nancy of Oriskany; several nieces and nephews.
