He was the son of Michael and Mary Allen of Warners. Pat married Margaret Orvis of Baldwinsville where they lived and raised five children, they were mar-ried 52 years. He retired after 42 years of service with Crucible Steel. Very active in the Baldwinsville community, he was a member of the Board of Education for many years and served as president in 1957. Pat was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, Baldwinsville. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret, July 6, 1989, a son, William "Bill", August 18, 1985 and a brother, Louis Allen of Warners. Besse, Janet Starkweather December 9, 2004 Janet Starkweather Besse, 79, died after a decade-long battle against multiple myeloma. She was a 1946 graduate of Vassar College and received a MS from Syracuse University in 1973. In the Syracuse area since 1953, Janet dedicat-ed much time to the community. She served as the president of the World Affairs Council and spearheaded the annual book sale of the Syracuse Vassar Club. She became a founding trustee and board member of the Erie Canal Museum after leading a Junior League project to save the Weighlock Building and to raise funds for its conversion to a museum. In 1975, she co-founded Concerned Citizens Against Drunken Driving, an organization that later became RID-NYS and eventually RID-USA. Around the same time, she became president of the Coalition Advocating Protection of the Environment and spearheaded a public campaign for recycling. In the late 1980s, Janet joined the Skaneateles Lake Pure Water Association and later organized and served as president of the Tri-County Skaneateles Lake Association. Janet was named the Post Standard's Woman of Achievement in 1977 and in 1988 received the Jefferson Award for public service from the Skaneateles branch of the American Association of University Women. She was also honored with a 2001 entry in the National Women's Hall of Fame 2001 Book of Lives and Legacies. Janet was an avid and accomplished sailor who volunteered with her sailboat for anti-submarine patrol in Western Long Island Sound during 1942 and 1943. She finished third with a crew of Skaneateles women in the Women's National Sailing Championships in 1976 and won many local and regional regattas. With her husband, Dick, she founded The Sailboat Shop and the Skaneateles Sailing Club in 1976 and did much to promote sailing and small boat racing on the lake. She is predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Richard Besse, who died on September 17, 2004. Janet is survived by her four children: Susan, Jonathan, Tina and David; nine grandchildren; and her brother James Starkweather. A memorial service will be held at Noon on December 18 at the Parish House of the St. James Episcopal Church in Skaneateles. Dales, Ruth Lindquist December 3, 2004 Ruth Lindquist Dales, 88, of DeWitt died Friday, December 3rd at the Nottingham Retirement Community. She was born October 19, 1916 in New York and graduated from Cornell University in 1937 with a Bachelor of Science degree. In October, 1939 she married Gardner Dales and moved to Buffalo, NY where she was employed as a Bacteriologist at Buffalo Children's Hospital. She also took part in numerous volunteer activities and subsequently taught biology at a private school in Buffalo. Ruth and Gardner moved to the Syracuse area in 1970 where they enjoyed many activities, including membership in DeWitt Community Church. Mrs. Dales was especially active in the Cornell Alumni Association of both the Buffalo and Syracuse areas. In honor of her years of service, a scholarship fund was established in her name in 2000. She was predeceased by Gardner in December of 2001. Survivors include a son G. Anders Dales, wife Judy B. Dales; a daughter Judith Dales Whitman, husband William Whitman; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. "Red" Killingbeck, 77, of North Syracuse died Wednesday after a brief illness. Red was born in Lackawanna, NY and raised in Michigan. Red settled in North Syracuse for the past 52 years with his wife Ruby and his 3 daughters, Cheri, Jolynn and Nancy. A Veteran of WWII and the Korean War, Red served his country, as his generation did so proudly, first in WWII as a Naval Sea-Bee and later in Korea with the Army's 82nd Airborne. He was also a supervisor for the Railroad and retired from Carrier Corp. where he was a fire inspector. Red is predeceased by a brother, Stewart Killingbeck. Lattanzio, Rocco "Rocky" December 9, 2004 Rocco Lattanzio, 76, of Syracuse, passed away Thursday with his beloved family by his side. Born on September 1, 1928 in the Bronx to Vincenzo and Nunziata Lattanzio, raised in Locorotondo, Bari, Italy, and went back to NYC when he was 19years old. In 1949 he settled in Syracuse and married his childhood sweetheart in 1950. Known as Rocky to his friends, he was self-employed for 50 years in the produce business and for the last 35 years was the owner of Dattler Foods Inc. and House of Bari Imports. Rocky had a talent for developing original recipes for the finest foods, wine, and friendships. He was the center of numerous gatherings and lit up every room he entered with a zest for life that he generously shared with all. With his wife of 54 years, he created a united and loving family. His family was always his priority and his children will continue the traditions he so lovingly handed down to them. Rocky has touched the lives of so many people and appreciated the little things in life. He helped us all appreciate them as well. He and his wife enjoyed traveling back to Italy each summer to visit family and friends. Rocky was a communicant and usher at Our Lady of Pompei Church.
