December 17, 2004 William H. Bell, 58, died Friday at his home in Quechee, VT. Born October 26, 1946, in Allentown, PA, a son of H. William and Betty Bell, he graduated from Fayetteville-Manlius High School and from Syracuse University. He later received his master's degree in computer science from Bemidji State University in Bemidji, MN. He has lived in Vermont for several years and has worked as a computer designer and drafter at Vermont Castings in Bethel, VT. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing and also was an accomplished woodcarver, having won awards for waterfowl carvings. He is survived by his son, Kevin H. Bell of Brooklyn, NY; his father, H. William Bell of Las Vegas, NV; his mother, Betty Bell Hutchinson of Deerfield Beach, FL; two sisters, Cynthia Andrews of Fabius, NY, and Keryn Piersa of West Palm Beach, FL; a niece and a nephew. Burstein, 86, formerly of Hubbardsville, passed into the hands of the Lord Friday, December 17, 2004, at Valley Manor Nursing Home, Norwich, NY. Born July 24, 1918, in Hubbardsville, she was a daughter of Lewis and Lena Wratten Brainard and was a graduate of Hamilton High School in 1935. On October 16, 1937, Olive was united in marriage to Arnold Burstein in Hubbardsville. He predeceased her on November 23, 1977. Mrs. Burstein was a lifelong Hubbardsville resident and a member of East Hamilton United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Hubbardsville Home Bureau. Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Donald (Sharon) Boise of Smyrna; three sons: Norman (Helen) Burstein of Morrisville, Ronald Burstein of Hamilton and Kenneth (Jane) Burstein of Hubbardsville; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; several nieces and nephews. December 17, 2004 Rita A. Cummings, 83, of Garden City Dr., Mattydale, died Friday at Crouse Hospital. A native of St. Anicet, Quebec, Mrs. Cummings resided in Mattydale since 1945. She graduated as valedictorian from Fort Covington High School in Up-state, NY, the Central City Business Institute and attended University College. During WW II, she worked for the L.C. Smith-Corona Typewriter Co. in Syracuse and for the Community War Fund in Washington, DC, while her husband was stationed at the Pentagon. She returned to Syracuse when he was sent overseas. For the next 20-plus years, she pursued the primary value of her life as wife and mother of five. She returned to the work force as the library secretary at North Syracuse High School in 1969 and retired in 1981. Mrs. Cummings was a retired member of the New York State Association of Educational Office Professionals and the National Association of Educational Office Personnel. She was the past president of the North Syracuse Association of Educational Secretaries. She was also a member of the Institute of Retired Professionals and a former Red Cross volunteer. She was a communicant of St. Margaret's Church and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. Surviving are one daughter, Rosemary (Charles) Metzler of W. Seneca, NY; three sons: Carleton Jr. (Beverly) of Houston, TX; Frank (Dorothy) and John, of Mattydale; three brothers: Roland Richer and Arthur Richer of Tupper Lake, NY, and Leonard Richer of Clay; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Carleton Sr. in 1981; a daughter Carol Anne Franklin in 1984; and three brothers: Marcel in 1994, Herbert in 1988 and Hervie in 2004. Edward was very active in the Freemasons, such as past master of the F. & A. M.
