Jack was born on October 6, 1922, in Oneida, the son of the late Fenton and Vera Louise Ingalls Bliss. He had resided in Wolcott for the past 57 years. He had been a carpenter for many years, retiring from Mott's Lumber in Red Creek. He was a member of the Wolcott Elks Club #1763, and the Red Creek Conservation Club. Born in Saratoga Springs on October 15, 1926, he moved to North Syracuse in 1952 after accepting a teaching position with the North SyracuseSchool District. He taught 40 years, retiring in 1983 as head of the business department of Cicero High School. Mr. Cortese was an Army veteran of WW II. He also served on the original planning board for the construction of St. Rose of Lima School. He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church and a member of the Bishop Curley Knights of Columbus Council 3717 and of the Optimist Club. Surviving are two sons, Michael (Leslie) Cortese Jr. and Anthony (Meg) Cortese; a daughter, Sandra (Raymond) Gale; five grandchildren; two brothers, Anthony of Hudson Falls and Joseph of Canastota; and two stepsisters in Italy. Born in Watervliet, NY on November 25, 1914, she was a graduate of Nottingham High School and lived in the Syracuse area most of her life. Mrs. Gifford was an original volunteer andlater bookkeeper for the DeWitt Community Library. She was a member of the DeWitt Community Church, a Sunday School teacher and was active in Circle "D" women's group. She was a life-member of Eastern Star. Surviving are her husband of 68 years, George W. Linda retired from Anheuser-Busch Inc. She was a member and treasurer of the Onondaga County Independence party and active with the Brighton Towers Tenants Assoc. Surviving are her husband, James E. Hood, Frances VanAuker December 17, 2004 Frances VanAuker Hood, 94, of Midland, MI, and formerly of Medina, NY, passed away Friday, December 17, 2004 at the home of her daughter, Sandra Clark, where she had lived for the past five years. Frances was born in the town of Yates, NY on January 29, 1910 to the late Clarence and Elizabeth (Rook) VanAuker and they moved to Medina, NY in 1921. Mrs. Hood graduated from Baker Teachers Training School and Brockport Normal and was a school teacher in a one-room school house for six years. In 1931, she married Linus Hood and they were married for 60 years. Mrs. Hood was very active in her community of Medina, NY. Among her many organizations she was an Eastern Star member, a faithful member of the Medina Presbyterian Church, a 4-H leader, and a wonderful homemaker and gardener. Mrs. Hood had three children, David Hood, Sharon Hood Cooke Brooks who predeceased her in 1983 and Sandra Hood Clark who lives in Midland. She had eight grandchildren, including Laurel Bucci of Midland and 12 great-grandchildren. A Memorial service will be conducted at the gravesite in Albion, NY at a future date. Huni, 78, of 4 Claremont Ave., Massena, died late Sunday evening at his home. He had been in failing health for the past few months. He was born November 19, 1926, in Harrisville, NY, the son of the late William C. and Anna (Schweitzer) Huni. He graduated from Black River High School. He was a Radarman Third Class in the U.S. Navy from November 8, 1944, until he was honorably discharged on August 7, 1954. He married Barbara "Bobbi" Severance on November 23, 1947, at the Methodist Church in Black River with Rev. Card. She died March 1, 2003. He was an electrician and electrical supervisor with the New York Power Authority, retiring in 1988. Bill was a very dedicated member of the Masonic Lodge # 513 of Free and Accepted Masons, where he served as the past master. He was a member of the York Rite Bodies, Massena and the Scottish Rite Bodies, Norwood and the Media Temple, Watertown, where he served as Potentate in 1991 and was a co-director of the Media Temple Circus. He was also a member of the Royal Order of Jester #142, Watertown, where is a past director and an emeritus member. He was also very active with the Massena Shriner's Club and is an emeritus member of the Shriner's Hospital of Montreal. He was also a member of the First United Church, Massena, where he was a former trustee and treasurer. He is survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Deborah Jayne and Dr. Craig Fleming, Vancouver, WA, Lynne and Jerry McClure, Baldswinsville, NY; three grandsons; three step-grandchildren; one sister, John and Helen Peck, Great Bend, NY; one brother, Robert "Bucky" Huni, Black River, NY. He was predeceased by a daughter Patricia Sue at birth and two sisters, Pauline Cowan and Doris Goodman. He was a member of the Tyrol Club of Solvay, past President of the Solvay Senior Citizens and was an avid golfer, bowler and square dancer. Petrella December 20, 2004 Retired Master Sergeant Nicholas A. Petrella (USAF), 47, of Solvay, went home to be with the Lord on Monday December 20, 2004 after a long battle with cancer at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was born in Syracuse and graduated from Sol-vay High School in 1975. He served in the best Air Force in the world for 22 years and received a Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal and the Southwest Asia Medal. He graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale Magnum Cum Laude. He was employed at Lockheed Martin, Liverpool, in the Radar Division for the past three years. Nick was an active member of The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-Day Saints. He served as a Sunday School teacher for the youth and also served in the High Priest Quorum. Wallace, 94, formerly of Oneida, died on Sunday, December 19, 2004. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at the convenience of the family, from the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., Oneida. Interment will be made in Glenwood Cemetery. There are no public hours of visitation. Published in the Syracuse Post Standard on 12/21/2004. Williams, Frank B. December 14, 2004 Frank B. Williams, 87, formerly of E. Main St., Elbridge, died Tuesday, December 14, in Mercy Health & Rehabilitation. Born in South Onondaga, Frank moved to Elbridge from Camillus in 1944. He was a 1935 graduate of Camillus High School. He was a farmer for most of his life. He also worked for the NYS Dept. of Transportation from 1970 to 1982. Frank was a member and former trustee and deacon of the Elbridge Community Church. His wife, the former Ruth Lyon, died in 1997 and his grandson Jason Walton died in 1993. Surviving are a son, Peter J. (Linda) Mitchell of Jordan; three daughters, Frances A. (Jon) Stahl of Meridian, Norma J. (William) Hage of Fla., and Susan R. (Stanley) Thomas of Ellisburg; a sister, Norma (Donald) Oliver of Marcellus; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Milan Lyon of Elbridge; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren. Services will be noon, December 29, at the Bush Funeral Home, 120 E. Main St., Elbridge. Spring burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Camillus. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to noon on the 29th prior to the services. Contributions may be made to the Elbridge Community Church.
