December 21, 2004 Helena S. Agan, age 91, formerly a longtime resident of Oneida, died Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at the Oneida Extended care Facility where she had resided since January, 2002. She was born on February 17, 1913 in Rome, NY, thedaughter of Henry A. and May R. Kapfer Smith. Mrs. Agan graduated from the Academy of the Holy Name in Rome. On June 9, 1934, she married Francis D. Agan in St. Mary's Church in Rome, NY. Mr. Agan died on July 19, 1985. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Agan was employed for many years as a secretary in the Sales Office of Oneida Ltd. Mrs. Agan was a communicate of St. Joseph's Church in Oneida. After her retirement she was a longtime volunteer at the Oneida Health Care Center. She was a member and past Grand Regent of Catholic Daughters of the Americas. In the early 1980's she was a District Deputy of the Onondaga and Oswego Co. chapters of Catholic Daughters. During the 1960's she was the local chairperson for the Red Cross bloodmobile drives in the City of Oneida. Mrs. Agan was also active in the Mother's Club of St. Patrick's School and the Seneca Street PTA. She was an avid bridge player. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and John Mancuso of North Bay and Summerville, FL, and Diane and Charles Kimball of Canandaigua; one son and daughter-in-law, William and Kristine Agan of Oneida; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Devine, Tully, NY, Michael Mancuso, Buffalo, NY, Scott Kimball, Bloomfield, NY, Brian Agan, Hamden, CT, and Emily Agan, Oneida. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, December 24 in St. Joseph's Church, Oneida at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Edmund Castronovo, Pastor officiating. Burial will be made in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Oneida. Bassett, Goldie (Hendrick) September 18, 2004 Goldie (Hendrick) Bassett of Tampa, FL, died Saturday, September 18, 2004, in Tampa, FL. She had a lengthy battle with senile dementia. She retired from General Electric and was former owner of Bassett's Exterminating. She is survived by two sons, Charles H. Marcott of Plant City, FL, and Leonard L. Marcott of Golden Valley, AZ; one daughter-in-law, Lillian Marcott of Golden Valley, AZ; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Birdsell, Reuben W. December 19, 2004 Reuben W. Birdsell, 81, of Fulton, passed away December 19, 2004. A native of Boise, Idaho, Mr. Birdsell had resided in the Palermo-Fulton area most of his life. He retired in 1988 after 47 years with Nestle Company, Fulton. Mr. Birdsell was an honorary member of the Palermo Volunteer Fire Department, Palermo. He was a life-member of VFW Post 569, Fulton. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, the former Marion R. Raymond of Palermo; two daughters, Linda L. Fravor of Mexico and Brenda M. Fietze of Liverpool; two sons, David R. Birdsell of Mexico and Dennis W. Birdsell of Volney; a sister, Ruth Roach of Eagle Bay; a brother, Harold Pelo of Mount Pleasant; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a niece and nephew. December 20, 2004 Mary Frances Foley Buskirk, 91, of Brewerton, NY, died Monday at her home after a brief illness. Born January 7, 1913 in Carthage, NY, the daughter of Stephen and Ellen McDonald Foley, she graduated as Salutatorian in 1929 at Immaculate Heart Academy High School and Watertown School of Commerce in 1931. She worked at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company there and married Carleton W. Buskirk August 27, 1938. Mary was predeceased by infant children, Joseph, Mary and Marietta. Her husband Carleton died in 1994. Mary retired as a Stenographer in 1968 from the North Syracuse School District. She worked at both the Allen Road and Roxboro Junior High Schools during the first years they opened. She and her husband spent winters in the Florida Keys and California, and summers at their cottage in Sacket's Harbor. At age 72 she passed her General Class Ham Radio test and became an amateur radio operator with the call sign "N2FIW". Mary had a long life and she lived it honorably well. She was a perfect mother, dear wife, loving grandmother and profound spiritual example of those blessed to share her life. Surviving are her children, James G. (Susie) Buskirk of Anahiem, CA; Ellen Buskirk of Fountain Valley, CA; Carleton, Jr. (Patricia) and Joel E. Buskirk both of Brewerton; seven grandchildren and a great-grandson. Hubbard, 81, of Watervliet, died Sunday, December 19, 2004, at Albany Medical Center after a brief illness. He was the husband of Mary Prentiss Hubbard. Born in Utica, NY, he was the son of the late Moses and Phyllis Hopkins Hubbard. A veteran of WWII, he served as a pilot in the US Navy. He was a graduate of Middlebury College, and Cornell Law School. He enjoyed spending time with his family at Piseco Lake in the Adirondacks. Since 1999, he resided with his wife in the capital district, having moved from Syracuse. Mr. Hubbard was an attorney with his late father, practicing in Utica. He was an attorney at American Benefit Life Insurance, in Minneapolis, MN, and later with American General Life Insurance of NY in Syracuse, retiring in 1992. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Nancy L. Berlind of Manhattan, NY, and Stephen H. Hubbard of Cambridge, NY; three grandchildren, Kate and Ryan Hubbard and Gabriel Berlind; and a great-granddaughter, Katrina Hubbard. He was predeceased by his siblings, M. She graduated from Pulaski Academy High School in 1931 and attended CCBI in Syracuse. She married Nelson J. Peters in 1964; he died in 1980. She was employed by Lincoln National Bank for 20 years retiring in 1964. She was a member of the Park United Methodist Church and a member of the Pulaski Historical Society. Smith, Carol December 19, 2004 Carol Smith, 80, formerly of 88 Whitcomb Rd., Fulton, died at St. Luke's Health Services. She was born in Syracuse, NY and had been a resident of Fulton for most of her life. She graduated from Fulton High School in 1941 and Central City Business Institute in 1942. She was a US Navy veteran having served during WWII and honored with the American Theatre Medal and the Victory Medal. She was a bank teller at First Trust and Deposit, Fulton. She was a member of Holy Family Church, the Oswego Latin Community and Catholic Daughters Court Per LeMoyne. She was predeceased by her husband, Byron Smith in 1999. Spina, Gaetana December 21, 2004 Gaetana Barile Spina, 92, passed away December 21, 2004. Gaetana was born March 2, 1912 in Campodipietra, (CB) Italy. She immigrated to the Unites States circa 1959 and settled in Syracuse. Gaetana retired from Syroco in 1975. She was adeeply spiritual and compassionate woman. Gaetana enjoyed many pilgrimages including: Loures, Fatima, Medjugoria and the Holy Land. She was a communicant at St John the Baptist Church and a member of the Legion of Mary. Gaetana is predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Donato Spina who died January 24, 1997. He was born on January 12, 1965, in Syracuse, the son of William and Virginia Teller. Scott enjoyed fishing and playing sports and was an avid Buffalo Bills fan and loved the Yankees. Mary's family were the owners of the Queen Anne Ice Cream Store in Elmwood, where she was em-ployed for many years. She was also formerly employed as a Teller with Key Bank, retiring after 18 years of service. Her husband, Steven C. Togias died in 1999; a daughter, Joyce Togias Falcone in 1990 and a granddaughter, Stephanie Falcone in 1990. She is survived by two sons, Charles S. and wife, (Linda) Togias and Nicholas S. Togias, both of Syracuse; three grandchildren; two brothers, Peter (Sophia) Copanas of Dewitt and Paul Copanas of PA.
