"Bob" Doran, 81, died November 23, after a long illness. Mr. Doran was born in Syracuse and attended Solvay High School. A Navy veteran of WWII, Mr. Doran was awarded several honors including the U.S. Navy Distinguished Flying Cross. Mr. Doran had also volunteered at the Upstate Medical Center's Pediatric Hematology Oncology Clinic, as Santa Claus. He generously contributed to the Children's Special Needs Fund, which developed into the CNY Ronald McDonald House. After 40 years with Crucible Steel, Mr. Doran and his wife retired to St. Augustine, FL, where they enjoyed frequent visits from their family and friends, and he was particularly active in celebrating his Irish heritage. Rizzo, Mary Vellone December 23, 2004 Mary Vellone Rizzo, 96, died Thursday, December 23, at Van Duyn Home and Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Born in Casanova di Carinola, province of Caserta, Italy, on November 22, 1908, she immigrated to America with her family atage four. Mary was especially well-known for her hospitality and Italian cuisine. Mary was a lifetime communicant of St. Peter's Italian Church. For many years she also attended Mass daily at the Cathedral. She was predeceased by her husband Carl in 1986. Rush, 81, of Syracuse, died December 24, 2004, at home. A native and life resident of Syracuse, Mr. Rush retired in 1983 as a Lieutenant in the Syracuse Fire Department after 37 years of service. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she attended Laurel School and Kingswood School. She was a graduate of Kirkland College. A formerelementary school teacher, she and her husband settled in Cazenovia and developed Oak of Mamre Farm to be a retreat for family, friends and parishioners. The farm reflects many of her passions, including a 300-specimen rose garden, a flock of Icelandic sheep, prize-winning Exmoor ponies, and chickens. Her passion for animals was also reflected by her volunteering at the Syracuse zoo and her support of The Heifer Project. An artist, she was a book illustrator as well as an icon painter and photographer. She was an avid student of history, Eastern Orthodox theology, horticulture and ornithology. Sarah was a member of the Syracuse Rose Society and the Cherry Valley Country Spinners. She was a board member of Christ the Savior Brotherhood and was an active communicant and a Psaltress at the Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Church. Sarah will be sorely missed in the lives of hundreds of friends in CNY and around America. They are only consoled by the trust that she now abides in Heaven with the God she served so faithfully for her adult life. He was a builder and general contractor in Cicero for over 45 years and also was a licensed real estate broker with World United Realty, Inc., for over 20 years. Ziverts, Eric December 22, 2004 Eric Ziverts, 73, of Liverpool, passed away Wednesday. He was born in Riga, Latvia, and came to the U.S. when he was 19 years old. He attended Syracuse University in the 1950s and the Institute of Foreign Affairs in Connecticut. Mr. Ziverts wasthe retired owner of Eric Ziverts Contracting Co. He was a former soccer player for the Syracuse Scorpions in the 1960s and later a coach for Liverpool Youth Soccer, an avid fisherman and a LaFayette Volunteer Fireman. Mr. Ziverts was an Army veteran and a First Lieutenant in the New York Guard. Survivors: his wife of 43 years, Rose Pulvirenti Ziverts; daughters, Eva (Rande) Lawrence of Dewitt and Ingrid (Scott) Clisson of Syracuse; son, Erik Ziverts of Liverpool; seven grandchildren.
