A lifelong resident of the Syracuse area, Helen was a graduate of Central High School. She retired from 25years of service with General Electric Company in 1981. Helen was a dedicated and loving wife, mother and grandmother and an extraordinary homemaker. She devoted her life to the happiness and welfare of her family, from whom she derived her greatest joy. Her unconditional love and support of her family serves as a perpetual inspiration and guiding light. Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Howard L. Bartolo; two sons, John L. She was born in Germany and grew up on Campbell Rd. in Mattydale. She graduated from North Syracuse High School in 1978 and at-tained her master's degree in special education from Saint Rose College in 1986. Madonna was married to David Fitz Simons on September 5, 1985, and moved to Middleville. She taught special education in the Little Falls area and later in the North Syracuse Central School District. Madonna dedicated her life to helping others and always put their needs ahead of hers. She loved her husband and family very much. She also had a dog (Sara) and cat (Zippy) that she loved. Her favorite hobby was to do her gardening in the summer. She is survived by her husband, David Fitz Simons of Little Falls; her mother, Sandra Teresko of Syracuse; her father, Steve Teresko of Saint Augustine, FL; her brother, Steven Teresko of Milford, MA, and his wife Rheta and their children, Alisha, Zachary, Matthew and Nicholas. A native of Auburn, Steve graduated from West High School, then served two years in the Marine Corps. He was a Kore-an War veteran. He attended Auburn Community College. Steve was employed by New York Telephone Company for 40 years. He was an outside plant engineer until his retirement in 1995. Steve was a member of Arrowhead Golf Club, the Association of Belltel Retirees and the Solvay Tyrol Club. He enjoyed visiting with his children and grandchildren. Steve had a passion for golf and enjoyed playing in his Monday, Wednesday and Friday golf league with all his friends. He was a communicant of Holy Family Church. December 18, 2004 Mark Calvin Michaels, 94, passed away Saturday, December 18, 2004, at Iroquois Nursing Home with his family at his side. He lived 18 years at Nob Hill Apartments and for the last two years at Altera Summerfield Village. Mark was born April 20, 1910,and grew up with his brothers Chuck and Kenneth in Riverside (Buffalo). They had an idyllic childhood swimming and using their canoes on the river. He graduated from Hutchinson Technical High School and got a job on the Great Lakes Freighter Octorora as a deck hand. He continued working on the lakes, earning his way through Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, where he was a member of the STAG Fraternity. He was a multiple letter winner for track and set several records for the mile race. Mark started working for Goodyear Wendy Oil Company in Buffalo, which was bought by the Texaco Company, for whom he worked 35 years as a business manager. He was a member of DeWitt Community Church, Valley VIPs, was travel Chairman for the VIPs, was a member of the Institute for Retired Professionals and the Great Lakes Historical Society. Mark enjoyed reading and traveling around the world with his wife of 54 years, the former Eunice Jones, who passed away in 1998. Surviving are his daughter, Marcia Michaels Schneider, and her husband Carl of Jamesville; his granddaughter, Kirstin Michael Purkiss, of Cicero and her daughter Nina Purkiss; his granddaughter, Tracy Karla Fee, and her husband Douglas of Richmond and their two children, Zachary and Samantha. December 25, 2004 Richard J. Mumford passed away peacefully to be with the Lord. Surrounded by his loving and supportive family in his home, Dick ended his long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Oneida on December 12, 1934, to Agnes (Loucy) and Robert Mumford, Dick lived a full and rich life as a great father and husband and a successful businessman. Dick met his wife Joanne in Rochester, and the two were married on March 5, 1957. Returning to Sherrill, Dick worked for Prudential before joining Oneida Limited and later was the owner of Sherrill Custom Windows. Active in his community, Dick was a member of the Oneida Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Knights of Columbus, the Moose Club, the Owl's Club and a parishioner at St. Helena's in Sherrill. Dick was also a great family man with caring and compassionate spirit and a wonderful sense of humor. Dick is survived by his wife Joanne; five daughters: Debbie and John Kemp of Florida, Cherie and Eric Stooks of Parish, Julie and Bob Sweet of Sherrill, Mary and Gary Bush of Vernon, and Judy and Rich Sullivan of Sylvan Beach; two sons, Richard and Cathy Mumford of Oneida and Michael Mumford of Colorado; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Lynda Mumford of Sherrill; and one brother-in-law, James Klipfel of California; as well as 18 grandchildren; three nephews; two nieces-in-law; his faithful companion Maggie and numerous friends. O'Brien, 71, of 49-1/2 Maple Street, Massena, formerly of Pennellville, NY, died Saturday, December 25, 2004, at Massena Memorial Hospital, where he had been admitted the previous day. He had recently been a resident of St. RegisNursing Home, Massena. He was born February 11, 1933, in Syracuse, the son of the late William Joseph and Kathryn "Kitty" (Warner) O'Brien. He graduated from Elmira High School and was very active with the class reunions there, publishing their newsletter. He served in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany. He married Rhoda J. Wilcox on August 28, 1964, in Elmira, NY. Mrs. O'Brien died March 22, 1999. After his military service, he attended various technical schools to become an electronics technician with the United States government for over 35 years. He first worked with the FAA and then retired while working with the NOAA at Hancock International Airport, Syracuse. He enjoyed flying airplanes and also model airplanes; he belonged to the Seaway Valley Model-Aires Club, Massena. He was also a member of the AMA. As an accomplished pistol shooter, he was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Syracuse Pistol Club. He also enjoyed his computer, repairing anything electronic and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Rick Gmyr, Massena; a son, James O'Brien, Syracuse; four grandchildren: Joshua, Zachary and Nicholas Gmyr, and Joseph House; one sister, Doris Coyle, Syracuse; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant son, William, and a sister, Eloise Maher. Calling hours and funeral services will be held in Syracuse at a time to be announced. He is a native of Syracuse and a World War II Navy veteran. He graduated in 1944 from Mount Hermon School in Northfield, MA, and in 1950 from SyracuseUniversity School of Engineering. He retired in 1986 from the heavy military division of General Electric. Mr. Powell was involved with many organizations including Andrews Memorial United Methodist Church, the Rescue Mission, Camp Fire USA, Village of North Syracuse Republican Party and North Syracuse Housing Authority. He was a Hiawatha Boy Scout Council member, served on the Camping Committee and was a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow. He was a member of Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity and was awarded their Chapter Distinguished Service Key in 2003. Rice Jr., 19, of Nedrow, passed away Saturday from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Shephard, Mary Bowers December 24, 2004 Mary Bowers Shephard , 76, of Roberts Road, Fenner, NY, died Friday, December 24, at her home after a courageous three-year battle with ovarian cancer. She was born in Cazenovia, the second and younger child of Ralph and Lucy Zogg Bowers. She resided most of her life in Cazenovia, except for six years in Middleton, NY. She was a graduate of Cazenovia Central School and received her associate's degree from the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. Mary served God with her many talents, including music and teaching. She was an organist in Middletown and at Cazenovia Village Baptist Church for 32 years. She had been choir director and 25 years as youth leader and Sunday School teacher. At the time of her passing, she was a member of First Baptist Church of Syracuse in Jamesville, NY. Mary was a homemaker who loved to cook, can, knit, make clothes, garden and care for her loving family of three sons and a daughter. In the community, she was a founding member of the Cazenovia area Habitat for Humanity and the Cazenovia CROP Walk. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Donald E.; three sons: Andrew (Lori), Tom (Ann) and Peter Shephard; her daughter, Meg (Jim) Foxvog; a foster child, Hung (Nancy) Lee and their four children; 10 grandchildren residing in Cazenovia and Tiskilwa, IL; and her brother, Gordon (Lois) Bowers. "Juice" Smith, 48, of Syracuse, was born in Jacksonville, FL, to Emma L. Williams and the late James Dawson. Born in Syracuse, he was a 1975 graduate of Cicero-North Syracuse High School. Tim was employed as greenskeeper at Arrowhead Golf Course the past three years. He waspreviously employed as a welder at Lambert Fabricating. He was a member of New York State Turf Grass Association, Arrowhead Golf Course, and coached and umpired Cicero Little League teams. Tim was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting and especially golf. His biggest enjoyment was his family. He was a loving and devoted husband, and there was nothing that gave him more joy than being father to his five children.
