Life member of St. Ann's Church, Owasco, and a trip coordinator for the Owasco, Moravia, Niles and Como Senior Citizens. Member of the West Niles Kitchen Band and NYS Grange. Predeceased by first husband Harry Hurst Sr. in 1987, second husband Robert Brokaw in 2000, and one grandson John LeFever in 1980. Mr. Calogero was a life resident of Syracuse before moving to Baldwinsville in 1991. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and served with the 101st Airborne Division. He worked as a self-employed repair and remodeling contractor for many years. Vince was a member of St. Peter's R.C. Church and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #1 in Syracuse. He was the son of the late Fannie and Anthony Calogero. Cirando, Marie A. October 31, 2004 Marie A. Cirando, a lifelong resident of Dewitt St., in the City of Syracuse, died on Sunday, October 31, at the Loretto-Cunningham Nursing Facility. Marie was the daughter of Daniel J. Cirando who died in 1976 and Anne M. (Farone) Cirando who died in 1991. Marie was a graduate of the Convent School and Nazareth College. She taught in the Diocese of Syracuse Catholic School system from 1966 until her retirement in October 2002. During her career she taught at Our Lady of Pompei School, Northside Catholic Junior High School, All Saints Junior High School and Bishop Grimes High School. Marie was involved with the Student Council, Mystery Players, Food Pantry and chaperoned many student trips to our nation's capitol, Ireland, England and Italy. She was honored in 1996 by the Federation of Catholic School Parents as their Outstanding Teacher of the Year. She loved to teach and was devoted to her students who were her extended family. Marie's endless supply of unexpected quips gave testimony to her wittiness. No one beat her at Jeopardy. She was an avid gardener and lifelong Yankee fan. Survivors: her brother, John A. He was born in Buffalo, NY, and in his youth excelled in many sports. He was an avid golfer and won many titles throughout his life. His father owned and operated several billiard estab-lishments, exposing Babe to the game from an early age where he practiced constantly for free, an advantage that combined with his natural gifts to produce an unusual talent. In the 1930's Babe attended Cornell University to study agricultural techniques that might benefit the family fruit farm in Hudson, NY. His studies were cut short when he accepted an offer to tour the country performing billiard exhibitions, which he did for the next five years. Babe has won many titles during his career and has the distinction of being the only billiard player in history to have won the U.S. Junior Championship at 15 years old, the U.S. Amateur Championship three consecutive times (1938, 1939, 1940), and the World's Professional Championship in 1964. He was inducted into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame in 1997, and is also a member of the Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame. He served in the Air Force during World War II after which he worked for the Muzak Corp. (formerly Davis Distribution) for the next 40 years, becoming Vice President of Sales. Babe and longtime friend Lawrence Moy have written two books about billiards, The Straight Pool Bible and Essential Pool. Survivors: Ruth Fish, his wife of 64 years; sons, Lawrence (Mary) and Gary (Lori); grandchildren, David (Jessica) and Kelley, Zachary and John; two step-grandchildren, Jason and Eric Dean; and step-great-granddaughter Dominique Barrett. While her children were young, she was an active member of the Sacred Heart Mothers Club. Pauline was an avid bowler in the Ladies Victory League and enjoyed fishing and spending time at her camp at Port Ontario. Johnson, George L. November 1, 2004 George L. Johnson, 80, of North Syracuse, NY, passed away Monday at Birchwood Health Care Center, Liverpool, NY. He was born in Herkimer, NY, and raised and educated in Ilion, NY. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, and was honor-ably discharged as an Aviation Chief Machinist's Mate in January, 1946. He graduated in 1950 from RPI with a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering. He was employed by General Electric for over 39 years, before retiring in March, 1989. He was a member of IEEE and Elfun. George and the former Merle L. Ammann of Rome, NY, were married in First Methodist Church in Syracuse, NY, in June 1955. George was the son of the late George and Ada Johnson. He was also predeceased by his brother Robert Johnson. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Merle; his three children, Lauren of North Syracuse, Alan of Baldwinsville, and Sharon Johnson of Melbourne, FL; his daughter-in-law, Christine Johnson; and his four grandchildren, Emily, Sarah, Rebecca, and William Johnson. Mr. LaForce was a college and high school basketball referee, and an IAABO 25-year member of Board 38. He played softball and enjoyed playing golf in the Greenview Country Club league. He was a volunteer with the Cicero Volunteer Fire Department and an avid Syracuse University football and basketball fan. Mr. LaForce was a veteran of the Army. He was predeceased by his wife, B. Peery, Robert J. November 2, 2004 Robert J. Peery, age 73, of Camillus, formerly of Liverpool, passed away Tuesday at VanDuyne Home. A native of NJ, he graduated from Gettysburg College and Rutgers University. He served in the Army as a lieutenant during peacetime. Bob was transferred to Syracuse from NYC by MONY and worked here as a life underwriter and was elected president of the NY Underwriters Association. Bob's passion was music, and he sang with the Syracuse Oratorio Society, his church choir, and various other sacred music groups. When he retired in 1994, he joined Literacy Volunteers and taught English as a Second Language. He also volunteered at WCNY, reading the newspaper on the air to the blind. Bob was an active member of the United Methodist Church, serving as a prayer partner with the pastor and as guitar player for the Vesper Service. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Lois; a daughter, Sarah (Ian) Clements of Alexandria, VA; a daughter, Gretchen (Maurice) DeLorenzo of Camillus; a son, Owen (Jean-Jacques) of Philadelphia, PA; a granddaughter, Olivia DeLorenzo; and two brothers in NJ, James and Richard. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on November 4, at Christ Community United Methodist Church on Stiles Rd., and a memorial service will follow at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Christ Community UMC Roof Fund, or the Alzheimer's Assoc. of CNY. A life resident of Auburn, she was a former employee of General Electric, Auburn, member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, and St. Marian Sisterhood. Survivors: her daughter, Sandra (Clair) Hildebrant of Lilburn, GA; sons, Nicholas (Elizabeth) Pingryn Jr. of Auburn and David (Judy) Pingryn of Becket, MA; her brother, Joseph Derevenko of Weedsport; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Smith, Harriet Florczyk October 31, 2004 Harriet Florczyk Smith, 89, formerly of Syracuse, died Sunday, October 31, 2004, in Bradenton, FL. She was predeceased by her husband William in 1977 and a daughter Harriet Pelon in 1995.
