Born in Utica, Grace retired as executive secretary from Bristol Laboratories, and was a member of the Liverpool Garden Club, a tax volunteer with AARP, a volunteer at Crouse Hospital, a member of St. Paul's Cathedral, and past president of Jewell Cemetery. She was predeceased by her husband Leland J. and a grandson Leland John Glavin. Surviving are three daughters, Joanne F. Ardune of Johnson City, NY, Patricia (Michael) Glavin of Liverpool, and Kathleen (Lawrence) Reschke of Mattydale; a brother, Philip C. MacArthur of Woodstock, GA; three granddaughters. She was the manager of a retail jewelry store in the Fayetteville Mall until retir-ing in 1986. She was an outgoing, gracious person. People loved her, and she loved them. Downes, Dorothy November 11, 2004 Dorothy Downes, 98, of Onondaga Hill, passed away at Community General Hospital on November 11 after a short illness. A native of Syracuse and member of a large, longtime Syracuse family, she had resided in Onondaga Hill for over 50 years where she was a communicant of St. Michael's Church. Dorothy was a graduate of Syracuse University Hospital of the Good Shepherd School of Nursing and became a school nurse teacher in the Syracuse City School District. She served in many of the city schools, including Nottingham High and Roosevelt Jr. High School during her 40-year career. Earlier this year she was recognized by Syracuse University on the 75th anniversary of her graduation. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, John and Virginia Will Downs of Onondaga Hill; and well more than 100 nieces, nephews and their spouses and 3rd and 4th generation family members, all of whom took great pleasure in her company and have revered and admired her for her effervescent spirit, her generosity and her tender concern for their welfare. A native of Syracuse, he was a graduate of Syracuse Central High School. He was a musician and member of Musicians Union Local of Syracuse, was a featured jazz trumpeter, and played for some Syracuse Symphony performances including the Civic Center opening with Ella Fitzgerald. He played locally with the Soda Ash Six, John Whitney Trio, and the Dixieland Update. He was also a member of the Skaneateles Recreation Center. November 10, 2004 Elaine Marie Johnson, 96, of Pulaski, passed away Wednesday at the Episcopal Church Home in Rochester, NY. She had her Masters Degree in Library Science and a teaching degree. Elaine taught high school English, French and was the school librarian at Jamesville High School and Jamesville Dewitt High School. She was a member of the NYS teachers Association and a Communicant of St. John the Baptist Church in Pulaski. She is predeceased by her husband, John in 2003 and daughter, Linda in 2001. "Jack" Mapes, 84, a longtime resident of Pompey Center, died Tuesday, November 9, at the VA Medical Center in Syracuse, NY. Jack was born in Monticello, NY, where he lived until 1960. He was a Captain in the Army Air Corps and served as a pilot in the Pacific during WW II. Jack followed his father into dairy farming, both in Monticello and in Pompey Center. While in Monticello, Jack was an active member of the Volunteer Fire Dept. For the past 20 years, he tremendously enjoyed the reunions of the 505th Bombardment Group. Jack is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alice; his children, John (Anne) of Kailua, HI, Bruce of Danbury, CT, and Janet of San Francisco, CA; his brother, Barth (Martha) of Freeville; and his sister Carol (William) Lane of Monticello. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 14, at the Community Covenant Church, 107 Pleasant Street in Manlius. A lifetime resident of the Syracuse area, she was a 1975 graduate of West Side Catholic High School. Karen attended Onondaga Community College.She was employed at Wegman's Onondaga for 16 years. Mevoli, Cosimo November 10, 2004 Cosimo Mevoli, age 80, of Atlanta, GA, passed away on Wednesday at the Atlanta Medical Center. He was born in Italy and lived in Syracuse most of his life. He served in the Italian Navy during WWII. Cosimo was a foreman with Eagle Lumber and then worked for the Rotondo Northway Lumber Co. He was a communicant of St. Peter's Church and a member of the Knights of St. John's at St. Peter's Church. His wife Rose Torchia Mevoli died in 1997. He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Monforte (Robert F. Krazmien) of DeWitt, and Jean (Joseph) Cannon of Atlanta, GA; two grandchildren, Joshua and Zachary Cannon; and a sister, Maria in Italy. Miller, 84, of Onondaga Hill, died Thursday. Born in Detroit, MI, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and the late Winifred (McCann) Layow. She retired in 1982 after 16 years from the New York State Dept. of Transportation. Shewas a communicant of Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. She was a lifelong and big time NY Yankee's fan. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Miller in 1966. Mother to her two daughters, she was also considered mother to her numerous nieces and nephews. She was the matriarch of the family and everyone looked to her for advice whether it was good or bad!
