She was born in Syracuse and was a crossing guard with the City of Syracuse for 23 years, retiring in 1979. Phil was a mechanics foreman for the town of Camillus Highway Dept. for 23 years, retiring in 1983. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of WWII. Hewas also a communicant of Our Lady of Peace Church in Lakeland, member of Solvay Geddes Veterans and life member of Pennock Post VFW in Solvay. His daughter, Joanne Marie Corrente, died in 1955. Phil's heart belonged to his family and his Skaneateles summer home. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, the former Grace V. Downing, Edward P. November 8, 2004 Edward P. Downing, 82, of 1704 Clark Hollow Rd., LaFayette, died November 8, 2004, at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse. Born the son of Elton and Grace Lockwood Downing in February 1922, he graduated LaFayette Central High School in 1943, worked on the family farm, in later years was a truck mechanic for Onondaga County Highway Garage of Jamesville and retired in 1984. Mr. Downing had a maple syrup business at the farm, which was a very sophisticated operation. His syrup was used all over the world. He lived his whole life on the family farm. November 13, 2004 Herbert A. Gates Jr., 82, of Cortland, and formerly of Albany St., Homer, passed away November 13, 2004, at Cortland Memorial Hospital. Mr. Gates served his country with the United States Army during WW II. He was associated with Stevralia and Gates Public Accounting, Herbert A. Gates Public Accounting and, most recently, with Joseph H. During CPA. He enjoyed golf and purchasing new cars. His many friends meant a great deal to him. Mr. Gates was a founder of the Cortland County Recreation Center, now known as Maple Hill Golf Club, in Marathon; a former member and past president of the Cortland Kiwanis Club; and former member of the Cortland Country Club. Mr. Gates is survived by his daughter Robin (Larry) Neider of Cicero; his son Gregory (Peg) Gates of Binghamton; his grandchildren: Ryan Mary (Ben) Gold, Connor Gates, Lauren Mary Neider, Andrew Neider and Adam Neider. He worked as a nuclear operator at Constellation Nuclear Engery in Scriba for one year.He was a graduate of Onondaga Community College. He was completing his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at SUNY Institute of Technology in Utica. Shamus was a graduate of G. Ray Bodley High School Class of 1995. He operated D & J Construction in Fulton with his father for many years. Shamus was a communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Fulton. He was a member of Pathfinder Fish & Game Club and enjoyed all things to do with the outdoors. All were welcome at "Shamus' Riverside Retreat." He was selfless, giving and simply beautiful. The descendent of pioneer settlers, he was born and lived his entire life in Syracuse, NY. He attended the old Nottingham School and was agraduate of Mount Hermon School and Hobart College, where he was a member of Theta Delta Chi Fraternity. He served in the Army Air Force in World War II and retired in 1981 as president of C.L. Amos Company. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Syracuse, Cazenovia Golf Club, and Cazenovia Club and was a former member of The University Club of Syracuse. Stuart-Whistler, William Thomas Stuart-Whistler November 8, 2004 William Thomas Stuart-Whistler, a resident of Foulkeways at Gwynedd, Gwynedd, PA, was an electrical engineer and advocate for peace who died of the complications of liver disease on November 8, 2004. He would have observed his 79th birthday on November 10. Mr. Stuart-Whistler, born in 1925, was committed to working for a nuclear free world, safe for his grandchildren and all children. He was a member of the Episcopal Church Without Walls. Born in Watertown, NY, Bill spent his childhood in Syracuse. He spent almost three years in the U.S. Navy and earned, through the G.I. Bill, a BS in electrical engineering from Cornell University. As a civilian, he worked at the Naval Ordnance Lab in Washington, DC. From 1953 to 1980 he worked at General Electric designing radar and satellite antennas, and from 1980 to 1988 he worked at the University of Pennsylvania in a lab for radar and antenna design. Bill married twice, first to Gloria Giocondo in 1948, then to Lillian Stuart in 1983. For the last five years, the Stuart-Whistlers have lived at Foulkeways at Gwynedd, Montgomery County, PA, coming from Media in Delaware County, PA. Bill Stuart-Whistler is survived by his children and grandchildren from his former wife, a daughter, Janice Beaucar and five sons, William, Kenneth, Thomas, James and Michael. He is also survived by his wife, Lillian Stuart-Whistler, her children and grandchildren; his brothers, Jack and Leonard Whistler, and a sister, Jill Lowrie.
