Mr. Byers was a graduate of Mount Saint Mary's College in Emmitsburg, MD. He worked as a reporter for the Geneva Times, and as an editorial writer for the yracuse Herald Journal. Mr. Byers served as a speech writer for former Mayor Lee Alexander for 16 years. He also worked in Albany for former Governor Mario Cuomo and for Senator Nancy Lorraine Hoffman. Mr. Byers was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in WWII and the Korean War. He is survived by a daughter, Jeri D. Byers of Anchorage, Alaska. Don, as he was known by family and friends, was a bible scholar, and is most remembered for his sense of humor and his love of music, particularly singing and theater. Born in Syracuse, he grew up in Cazenovia, attended South Kent School (CT), and graduated from Cazenovia Central School and The RCA Institute in New York City. He had been a member of Toastmasters, Cazenovia, Cavac Ambulance Corps, and a lifelong member of Willow Bank Yacht Club where he was Race Chairman. Groat, nee Jane Brewster Durston, of East Lyme, born December 8, 1906, in Syracuse, NY, daughter of Jessie Brummelkamp and Alfred Howlett Durston, died in Niantic on Thursday, November 4, 2004 She attended Miss Porter's School in Farmington from 1921 to 1925. She married Lewis P. Smith, Jr., of Syracuse, who died in 1951. She married Robert Andrews Groat in 1953; he died in 1987. She had two daughters, Barbara Smith Day-Schoen of Steamboat Springs, CO and Janet Smith Wickersham, who died April 2004, and a stepdaughter, Gretchen Groat Blake of Shelton. Mrs. Groat lived in Syracuse for 54 years and moved to New York City and Old Black Point, CT, in 1961. For many years Mrs. Groat spent her winters in Santa Barbara, CA, and was a member of the Birnham Wood Golf Club. While residing at Old Black Point, she was for many years a member of the Old Lyme Beach Club and St. Ann's Church in Old Lyme. Keyes, 61, of Cicero, died Monday at University Hospital. She was born in NYC, lived over 20 years in North Kingstown, RI and since 1994 in Cicero. In 1966 she graduated from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing as a registered and is a certified registered oncology nurse. She was employed by Hill Radiation Oncology in Syracuse, the Roger Williams' Institute at Rhode Island Hospital where she founded the Aids and Hemophilia Wing, Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in NYC where she was a pediatric chemotherapy nurse and for the National Institute of Cancer in Bethesda, MD. The Special Olympics were her primary volunteer activity. Surviving are her children, Daniel and Beth of Cicero; a sister, Kathy (Nick) Tri of Oregon; a brother, Donald (Valerie) Keyes of Georgia; an aunt, Mary Hetherington of Basking Ridge, NJ; two nieces; two nephews; and several cousins.
