November 20, 2004 Norman L. Barr Sr., 91, of Mattydale, died Saturday in Iroquois Nursing Home in Jamesville, NY. His wife Lucille died in October 1982. A lifelong resident of Central New York, Mr. Barr was a retiree of Bristol-Myers Squibb, where he was an op-erating engineer for over 33 years, retiring January 31, 1978. Mr. Barr Sr. was born in Syracuse, NY, the son of William and Pearl Halsey Barr. He was a former member of Konosioni Lodge #950 F&M, Syracuse, NY, and Operating Engineers 100E #11 and 81 for several years. He was a member of Delaware Baptist Church and of Bristol-Myers Squibb Quarter-Century Club since 1970. He enjoyed traveling, camping and dancing. Survivors: daughter, Norma L. Beyer, 90, of 121 Forrest Way, Camillus, died Sunday at Community General Hospital. Born in Syracuse, he was a graduate of Most Holy Rosary School. He lived in Camillus since 1971. Frank was a pressman for the Syracuse Her-ald-Journal for 43 years, retiring in 1978. An Army veteran of WW II, he was the recipient of the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars and the Conspicuous Service Award from New York State. He was also a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and a former member of the Ushers Club and Holy Name Society. He was a member of the American Legion Tipperary Hill Post 1361 and Local 66 of the Pressmen's Union. His wife of 54 years, the former Alice Hennessy, died in 1997 and daughter, Mary Ellen Gardner, died in 1998. Surviving are his daughter, Ann (Douglas) Llewellyn of Rochester; sons, Frank T. (Debra Gallagher) Beyer of Fayetteville and Larry E. (Deb) Beyer of Camillus; son-in-law, Maurice Gardner of Clay; sisters, Betty Drake of Auburn and Kathleen Byrne of Syracuse; and eight grandchilden. She graduated from State University College in Oneonta. She taught fifth grade in Laurens for 21 years and retired in 1974. She attended the Laurens Presbyterian Church and was very active in the women's group. She was a member of the Otsego County Retired Teachers' Association and the Laurens Golden Age Senior Citizens Group. She had teaching articles published as well as poems and stories for children. Other interests included volunteer work, crafts and reading. She was predeceased by her husband, Ward Brownell; her son, John Brownell; four sisters; and five brothers. Helen led a long, happy and healthy life. Helen's sense of humor remained with her until the very end. Helen was a resident of the East-wood areasince 1947. She was a homemaker who was the beloved mother of seven children, 24 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Her husband, John E. Hayes Sr., died in 1972; and her daughter, Barbara Rich of Henderson Harbor, died in 2004. Helen was a great cook and was accomplished at knitting and crocheting.
