November 22, 2004 Robert Bays, 81, of Virgil, NY, passed away November 22, Cortland Memorial Hospital. In his early years he was involved in farming and later was employed in the implement and real estate business. He also was the Virgil Code Enforcement Officer, retiring in 2001. He was a 63 year member and two term Chief of the Virgil Fire Dept. and a member of the Cortland County Firemen's Association as well as a past member and Director of the Central NY Firemen's Association. Bob also served for ten years on the Executive Committee of the Firemen's Association of the State of New York (FASNY) and was also a member of the State Fire Police Committee. Mr. Bays was a past Supervisor of the Town of Virgil, a member of the Cortland County Board of Supervisors and past Chairman of the Cortland County Legislature. Survivors include his wife, Frances Becker Bays; son, Kevin J. (Beth) Bays of Willet, NY; many grandchildren; two brothers; two sisters; nieces and nephews. Chapman, Laurel Kennedy November 18, 2004 Laurel Kennedy Chapman, 85, formerly of 115 Castle Rd, North Syracuse, NY, passed away Thursday, November 18, 2004. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Sherman and Alta Canfield Kennedy. She was born May 17, 1919. She was brought upin Warners, NY, and graduated from Warners High School in 1937. She also graduated from Syracuse University in 1941 with a teaching degree and later earned a master's degree in library science. She was employed by the city of Syracuse library system and retired after more than 30 years of service. She was very active in her church, Andrews Memorial United Methodist Church in North Syracuse. She was also a volunteer for North Area Meals on Wheels and the American Heart Association. Genealogy was one of her great interests, and she wrote two books on the Kennedy family history. She was predeceased by her husband Glenn Chapman, whom she married in 1954, in 1985. Her sister, Amorette Kennedy, and two brothers, Neil D. Kennedy and Rev. Roger B. Kennedy, also predeceased her. Surviving are two brothers, Sherman L. Kennedy of Kansas City, Kansas, and Hugh Kennedy of Cheyenne, Wyoming; one sister Martha DeSeyn of Warners; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Leon was born in Pennsylvania and moved to Upstate New York after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from Crucible Steel as a crane operator following 36 years of service. Born in Niles, Mary was the daughter of Michael and Mary Paluch Salata. She was a graduate of Auburn's East High School and a graduate of Auburn Business School. For many years, Mrs. Slobodiak worked along side her late husband, Mike at Nolan's Shoe Store. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, where she was a member of the Rosary and Scapular Society and the Catholic Daughters. November 21, 2004 Colonel John A. Stewart, Jr., 82, Fayetteville, died November 21 surrounded by family. Known to his friends and family as Jack, he was a 30 year career officer with the US Army and decorated war veteran. He earned his undergraduate degree at Okla-homa University and an MBA from George Washington University. During his career, he was stationed around the world and the US, commanded 800 troops in Germany, fought in WWII, the Korean War and was stationed at the Pentagon during the Vietnam War. His last four years with the Army were spent at Syracuse University as the head of the ROTC. He then worked 10 years for the Downtown Committee of Syracuse, among other duties, running the Downtown Farmers' Market. Jack volunteered as a Boy Scout leader, and gave time working for Contact and as a member of the Planned Parenthood and Fayetteville Village Planning Boards. He was an avid tennis player for over 60 years, skied, ice skated; played the accordion, the banjo, and harmonica by ear, and charmed all who came in contact with him with a rare humor and affection. He is survived by his wife, Nona Stewart; daughters, Allyn Stewart, Cazenovia, Jean Dally, Cornwall, Kate Stewart, Cazenovia; son, Mark Stewart, Florida; brother, Lt. Colonel K. M Stewart, Indiana; grandchildren, Alex and John McCarroll and Joshua and Katie Stewart. Lauderdale, FL, died Wednesday, November 17, 2004. Mrs. Strong was born Catherine Piraino in Syracuse, NY to Thomas and Oleria Piraino. She was employed by Syracuse Trust Company untilshe joined a newly formed Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in 1942. Mrs. Strong served for 20 consecutive years as an enlisted woman and officer in various assignments in the U.S., the Pacific and European Theaters. Upon retirement in 1962, Mrs. Strong worked for the National Council of Catholic Women in Washington, D.C. where she was also a member of the Army/Navy Club, the Opera Society, Washington Performing Arts Society, and volunteered at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts from its inception until moving to Fort Lauderdale, where she became a devoted volunteer at Holy Cross Hospital and active member of the Florida Opera society, Museum of Arts , Florida Philharmonic Society, Retired Officer's Association, Coral Ridge Yacht Club and St. Sebastian's Catholic Church where a Memorial Mass was celebrated November 20, 2004. She was predeceased by two husbands, Lt. Col. Nicholas M. Errig in 1981 and Casper H. Strong in 2000. He grew up in Binghamton, and served in the U.S. Army in 1945 and 1946. He was a graduate of the N.Y.S. College of Forestry at Syracuse University. He worked in the Engineering Dept. of New Process Gear for over 40 years, most significantly in the highly specialized position of gear designer, working with computers when they were a new technology. He had many hobbies. The most enduring was golf, which he played at Drumlins and Orchard Valli, and at Pinebrook - Ironwood in Bradenton, Florida. For years he played ping pong at the YMCA, and played chess with the Syracuse chess club. He was also a bird watcher with the Audubon for many years. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Doris Field Sutliff; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Gregory Cone of Nashua, NH; and sons and daughters-in-law, William and Carol of Lafayette, James and Nancy of Lafayette, John and Jennifer of Burnt Hills, NY, and son, Richard P. of Fayetteville; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. November 22, 2004 Edward L. VanDeBogart, 82, of Manlius, died Monday at Community General. He was a life-resident of the Town of Pompey. Retired as Head Custodian in 1984 for the F.M. Central Schools. Member of VFW Post #7872 and American Le-gion Post #141 of Manlius. Ed was an Army Veteran of WWII serving in the European Theater of Operations. He is survived by his beloved wife, Blanche (Jane) VanDeBogart; several nieces and nephews. Services: Friday 11 a.m. at Hartwell Funeral Home, 11 Clinton St., Tully. Interment Watervale Cemetery. "June" Wroblewski, 81, of 206 Wright Ave., Mattydale, died Monday at St. Joseph's Hospital. Mrs. Wroblewski was born in Fulton and was a life-resident of the Syracuse and Mattydale area. She was a member of St. Margaret'sChurch in Mattydale. Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Anthony T.; three sons, Louis W. "Topper" (Kathie) and Anthony T. "Tony", Jr. (Kathy) both of Chittenango, and Michael A. of Palm Springs, CA; a sister, Rose Ditch of Fairmount; four grandchildren, T.J., Tracie, Tony and Jeremy; five great-grandchildren, Taylor, Marti, Jordan, Tristen and Aiden and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the G.F. Zimmer Funeral Home, Chittenango. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse.
