November 19, 2004 Mabel G. Hawley Asselstine, 98, formerly of Baldwinsville,
died Friday, November 19, in Orangevale, CA. She was born in Warners and lived
in Baldwinsville all her life. Mabel was a bookkeeper for the A&P Food Company
over 20 years and formerly was an operator for NY Telephone. She was a member
of Baldwinsville First United Methodist Church and First Baptist Church. She
was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Henry L., in 1973 and her son
Leighton in 1998. Survivors: a daughter, Jane A. Fehl of Erie, PA; seven
grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services at the convenience of

Blok, John   
November 22, 2004 John "Blokie" Blok, 62, died of cancer at home on Monday,
November 22, 2004. He was born in Germany and lived in Syracuse for over 40
years. He was a longtime employee at the Regional Market. Survived by his
brothers, Eddie of Craw-fordville, FL; Jerry of Ft. Myers, FL; Fritz of
Bowling Green, KY; Val of Syracuse; sisters, Theresa of West Palm Beach, FL,
Lucia of Jacksonville, FL; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are
Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Frasier-Shepardson Funeral home with a
service at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions to American Cancer

Clark Sr., Richard E.   
November 25, 2004 Richard E. Clark Sr., 54, of N. Syracuse, passed away on
Thursday. He was born in Syracuse on March 18, 1950, to Gerald Sr. and
Georgette Clark. Richard owned and operated his own business for many years.
He enjoyed bowling and car racing. Richard is predeceased by his stepmother,
Susie Clark. He is survived by his longtime friend, Susan Potter; parents,
Gerald Sr. and Georgette; two sons, Andrew and Richard Jr.; three daughters:
Michelle, Jackie and Kristen; two brothers, Gerald Jr. and Donnie; one sister,
Kathy Booth; one aunt and uncle; several cousins, nieces and nephews. A
memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 30, at 8 p.m. at DeWitt
Memorial Funeral Home. Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. at the
funeral home, prior to the services. A private burial will be held at White
Chapel Memory Gardens.

November 16, 2004 Anne Catherine Dineen, 62, of Waikoloa, Hawaii, died
Tuesday, November 16, 2004, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. She was born
in Syracuse on April 27, 1942, and was a housewife. Survivors: son, Scott
(Marnie) Pauli; two grandchildren, Luke and Kalai Pauli, all of Waikoloa, HI.

November 25, 2004 Helen V. Fortner, 89, of Liverpool, died Thursday. Born in
Syracuse, she grew up in Pennellville, and for the last 66 years resided in
Liverpool. Mrs. Fortner was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church since 1931.
She is predeceased by her hus-band, Loren M., who died in 1991; a son,
Lawrence E. Fortner; her sister, Anne Saarie; two grandchildren, Ray and Susan
Fortner; and a great-grandchild, Corey Winguay. Surviving are daughters,
Shirley (Thomas) Galloway of Independence, MO, and Joan (Douglas) Damm of
Cicero; son, Richard (Mary) Fortner of Tucson, AZ; brothers, John and Henry
Dausman of Pennellville; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren. A
calling hour will be held Monday, November 29, 2004, 10 to 11 a.m at Maurer
Funeral Home, with a funeral service to follow at 11 a.m at the funeral home,

(Blair) Gearhart November 19, 2004 Mrs. Mary Kathryn (Blair) Gearhart, 84, of
Annapolis, MD, formerly of Camillus, NY, from complications of Alzheimer's.
She was predeceased by her husband, William F. Gearhart, in 1994. She is
survived by two sons, William R. (Nancy) Gearhart, Plainfield, NJ, and Kevin
B. Gearhart, Rockaway, NJ; two daughters, Susanne (Michael) Boyle,
Millersville, MD, and Janice Gearhart and Peter Farr, Johnson, VT; 11
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Services were held in Freeport, PA.

Holton, Leila L.   
November 25, 2004 Leila L. Holton, 91, formerly of Central Square, died
Thursday, November 25, 2004, at her daughter's home in North Syracuse. Born in
Rome, she had lived in Central Square since 1956 before moving to North
Syracuse two years ago. She was an inspector at General Electric Co.,
Liverpool, for 10 years before retiring in 1962. She was a member of the
Central Square M.I.A. Senior Citizens' Group and was predeceased by her
husband Raymond in 1986. Surviving are two daughters, Sharon Price of North
Syracuse and Jane Schill of Albuquerque, NM; a son, Joseph Schill of Hastings;
two stepsons, Gene Holton of Sandy Creek and Jack Holton of Smithsfield, RI;
11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday,
November 29, 2004, at Watson Funeral Home, Inc., 631 S. Main St., Central
Square, with burial in Carley Mills Cemetery, Hastings. Calling hours will be

November 25, 2004 Kathryn F. Izzo, 84, of North Syracuse, formerly of Central
Square, beloved mother of Edward J. (Linda) Izzo of Liverpool and Gloria Curdt
of TN, died Thursday. Born in Canastota, she was a beautician for 40 years and
operated Kay's Beauty Salon in Brewerton. She was a member of St. Michael's
Church. Her husband Edward Q. Izzo died in 1991. Surviving besides her
children are brothers, John and Joseph (Carmella) Gugliotto of Central Square;
sisters, Santa French of AZ and Agnes Gugliotto of Pennellville;
grandchildren: Gina Curdt and Edward Jr., Andrea, Daniel and Jeffrey Izzo; and
a great-granddaughter, Courtney. Services: 9:15 a.m. Tuesday at Traub Funeral

Keefe, Mary C.   
November 24, 2004 Mary C. Keefe, 80, of Syracuse, passed away November 24 at
St. Camillus after a long illness. Born in Cardinal, Ontario, to Evelyn and
Victor Smith, she resided in Syracuse most of her life. Mary graduated from
St. Lucy's High School. She worked for Syracuse City Schools for many years.
Mary retired from her last position as library assistant at Nottingham High
School in 1982. She was predeceased by her first husband, Syracuse police
officer James M. Considine. She is survived by her husband of 44 years,
Edward; one son, James Considine; two daughters, Kathleen Wilson and Barbara
Kawecki, all of Colorado; one sister, Margaret Manser of Syracuse; one
brother, Donald Smith of Liverpool; four grandchildren; several nieces and
nephews. Memorial service: Thursday, December 2, at 5 p.m. at Edward J. Ryan

McMullin, Gradie   
November 22, 2004 Gradie McMullin, 79, of Syracuse, passed Monday with his
family at his side. He was born in Tallassee, Alabama, and was a resident of
Syracuse most of his life. Gradie retired from Crucible Steel after 35 years
and was a WW II U.S. Navy veteran. Hewas predeceased by his daughter Celeste
Morrell in 1999. Survivors: his wife of 40 years, Dorothy Marie (Brown)
McMullin; daughters: Theresa A. (Lorenzo) Booker, Donna M. Johnson, Valerie J.
(Anthony) Mitchell and Bernice R. (Willie) Jackson, all of Syracuse; son,
Grady (Tiffany) McMullin Jr. of Albany; sister, Helen Kindred of Cleveland,
OH; brother, Eugene McMullin of Cleveland, OH; 16 grandchildren; nine
great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Walter Nally OSF November 26, 2004 Sister Mary Walter Nally OSF, 74, of Utica,
NY, died Friday, November 26, 2004, at the Wilson Center, 1024 Court St.,
Syracuse, NY. Sister was born in Utica, NY, to the late Frank and Elisabetta
(Calabove) Nally. Sister entered the Sisters of SaintFrancis on September 8,
1947, and professed her Final Vows on August 19, 1953. Sister taught in
elementary schools in the Syracuse diocese and in Camden and Riverside, NJ.
Sister is predeceased by two sisters, Victoria Skinner and Pauline Nally, and
a brother, Paul Nally. Sister is survived by a sister, Gloria DeCola, and
brother-in-law, Joseph R. DeCola, and many cherished nieces, nephews and
cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 30,
2004, at St. Anthony Motherhouse Chapel at 1024 Court Street, Syracuse. Burial

November 25, 2004 Patricia A. Notcher, 70, of Henderson Harbor, and formerly
of the Valley, died Thursday in Watertown. Patricia was born June 21, 1934, in
Syracuse, the daughter of Henry and Christine Shetler. She attended Onondaga
Valley High School and was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. She
enjoyed crafting and the outdoors, including flower gardening and bird
watching. Patricia is survived by her husband of 30 wonderful years, Thomas;
son and fiancee, Christopher D. Johnson and Linda Chiasson of Syracuse;
grandson, Nathan Johnson of N. Syracuse; and granddaughter, Emily Daily of

O'Neill, Theresa F.   
November 24, 2004 Theresa F. O'Neill, 80, of Manlius, passed away Wednesday at
Iroquois Nursing Home after a long illness with her family by her side. Born
in Syracuse, she was a graduate of Most Holy Rosary High School in 1941. She
began working at Cru-cible Steel where she met her husband of 51 years, James
D. O'Neill. She was a longtime resident of Elbridge, where she worked at
Cherry House Furniture in Camillus. She later moved to Long Valley, New
Jersey, and worked at Bambergers-Macy's Department Store. She retired to
Manlius in 1987 as a homemaker, where she enjoyed gardening, sewing and
shopping. Theresa was a great conversationalist and had a great love for her
children and grandchildren. She was a communicant of Immaculate Conception
Church in Fayetteville. Survivors: three daughters and two sons-in-law,
Marilyn and Ted Kerwin, Patricia and Ed Connell, all of Syracuse, Elise
O'Neill of Casselberry, FL; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert and Nancy
O'Neill of New Jersey and James O'Neill of Manlius; a sister, Sr. Mary Elise
Frank of Scranton, PA; seven grandchildren, Bryan, Tim and Megan Kerwin, Marie
and Beth Connell, Robert and Thomas O'Neill. She was predeceased by her

Schultz, John "Jack"   
November 25, 2004 John "Jack" Schultz, 85, of Roxboro Circle, Mattydale, died
Thursday at his home. Mr. Schultz was a life resident of Syracuse before
moving to Mattydale in 1989. He was an Army veteran of WWII; while serving in
the European Theater he par-ticipated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy. Jack
owned and operated Schultz's Restaurant in Mattydale from 1956 to 1973 and
then operated Schultz's Liquors on the North Side and was a car salesman for
Courtesy Ford in Mattydale until his retirement in 1980. He was a communicant
of St. Rose of Lima RC Church in North Syracuse and the Disabled American
Veterans Chapter #1. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Marie Phalen,
in 1995. He is survived by a stepson, William (Dorothy DiCarlo) Rhoads; a
stepdaughter, Kathy (Art) Salvetti of Fairfax, VA; three grandchildren: Jenna,
Jessica and Jared Paul, all of Fairfax. Services will be 9:15 a.m. Tuesday at
Krueger Funeral Home, and a 10 a.m. Mass in St Rose Church will follow. Burial

November 26, 2004 Leona C. Snyder, 87, of East Syracuse, died Friday. Born
February 24, 1917, in Florence, NY, she was the daughter of Henry and Carrie
Walker. She was a graduate of Camden Central Schools. Mrs. Snyder was a
resident of Syracuse for many years. She retired from Acme Markets in 1979.
She was an avid bingo and card player. Surviving are a son, Donald (Anne)
Snyder Sr. of Brewerton; two grandsons, Steven (Laura) Snyder of Brewerton and
Donald Jr. (Andrea) Snyder of Clay; two great-granddaughters, Danielle and
Allison Snyder; a brother, Donald Walker of Stanwix, NY; a nephew, Kenneth
(Susie) Walker of Camden; a special cousin, Patricia Klein of Syracuse; and a
sister-in-law, Mary Walker of Camden. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m.
Tuesday at Forest Park Cemetery, Camden, NY, under the direction of

Wednesday at St. Joseph's Hospital. Barbara was a member and Sunday School
teacher at the Hope Presbyterian Church. She retired as an inspector with B.G.
Sulzle, Inc. Shewas a volunteer for the International Students at SU and for
the American Literacy Program. She was predeceased by her husband Robert Truax
in 1980 and her brother Paul Bomyea and her sister Hilda Sawyer. Surviving are
five daughters, Karen (Tony) Williams of Jamesville, Cindy Monaghan of
Syracuse, Joanna Lynn Marie Hosler of Maryland, Danielle (James) Baines of
Nedrow and Patricia Ann Paige of Syracuse; one son, Gary Charles (Rosemary)

Tucker, Catherine Wright   
November 26, 2004 Catherine Wright Tucker, 92, of Homer, died Friday at
Cortland Care Center. Born to Frederick and Catherine Aherin Wright on
December 1, 1911, in the town of Van Buren, she lived in Jordan and
Baldwinsville most of her life, moving to Homer in 1991. Catherine graduated
from Jordan HIgh School in 1929 and took a year's teaching training course at
Oswego Normal School. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse for a year before
she was married. She was a retired employee of Harris Red & White Store and a
communicant of St. Mary's Church in Baldwinsville. Survivors: a son, Gerald
(Patricia) Tucker of Homer; a sister, Adeline Salisbury of Weedsport; six
grandchildren: Michael (Paula) of Cato; Jeffrey (Jenny) of McGraw; William;
John (Pia) of Cortland; Ellen (Victor) Marchetti of Cortland; and Mary Tucker
of Homer; 11 great-grandchildren; a niece, Sue Salisbury-Van Camp; four
nephews: Dennis, Terrence, Timothy and Dean Salisbury. Services: 10:30 a.m.
Tuesday at Falardeau Funeral Home, Baldwinsville, and 11 a.m. in St. Mary's

Turtura, Barbara J.   
November 25, 2004 Barbara J. Turtura, 79, of Liverpool, passed away Thursday.
Born in Fulton, she worked for the town of Salina in the office of the
assessor for many years. Mrs. Turtura was an active member of North Central
Assembly of God and amember of VFW Post #5540 Ladies Auxiliary. She is
predeceased by her father and mother, George and Laura Martin, and her
brother, Stephen Martin. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Richard;
son, John R. Turtura and his fiancee Margery Snyder of Michigan; son and
daughter-in-law, Richard R. and Rose Turtura of Oregon; daughter and
son-in-law, Mary E. and James Lindberg of Virginia; nine grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.
Besides her family, Mrs. Turtura is survived by many wonderful friends and
neighbors. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 30, 2004, at 1 p.m
in North Central Assembly of God, 7463 Buckley Road, North Syracuse. Burial
will be in Mt. Adnah Cemetery, Fulton. Calling hours will be Monday, November
29, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Maurer Funeral Home, 300 Second Street,

Verish Jr., Nicholas   
November 25, 2004 Nicholas Verish Jr, 52, of Cicero, NY, died Thursday at
home. Mr. Verish was born in Cincinnati, OH; he was the son of Nicholas and
the late Gloria Hammer Verish, who predeceased him on March 17, 2002. Mr.
Verish received his bachelor's de-gree from Juanita College and his master's
degree in petroleum geology from Oklahoma State University. He was a petroleum
geologist, employed by many oil companies. He is survived by his father,
Nicholas P. Verish Sr. of North Syracuse; and one sister, Lori J. Verish of
Liverpool. Funeral services will be held at St. Rose of Lima Church, 409 S.
Main Street, North Syracuse, on Tuesday at noon. Burial will be in North
Syracuse Cemetery, North Syracuse. There are no calling hours. Contributions

Zych, Helen B.   
November 24, 2004 Helen Brown Zych, of Manlius, died at home after a brief
illness on Wednesday, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Geneva to
Katherine (McNamara) and William Brown, she was raised in Cortland and
graduated from St. Mary's HighSchool. She graduated from Wilkes College in
Wilkes-Barre, PA, and received her master's degree in education from the State
University of New York at Cortland. Helen was a teacher in the Red Jacket and
Jamesville-DeWitt school districts and, after raising her family, returned to
work as a career counselor for the Regional Learning Service. At RLS, she was
the coordinator of the Education Information Center and wrote a weekly "Learn
to Work" column in the Syracuse Herald American/Post Standard. An active
participant in her community, Helen was a longtime member of the League of
Women Voters, serving on several League committees and as president for two
terms. She was a member of Thursday Morning Roundtable and received its Award
for Meritorious Community Service. Helen helped organize the Fair Campaign
Practices Committee at the request of the Onondaga County Board of Elections.
She served on the executive committees of the Onondaga Citizens League,
Onondaga County Charter Commission, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Citizens
Advisory Committee to the Family Court and the Onondaga Lake Partnership. The
beneficiaries of Helen's numerous volunteer hours include the Manlius Village
Library, the Manlius Historical Society and the F-M Food Pantry. She was an
active member of St. Ann's Church in Manlius. Survivors: her beloved husband
of 46 years, Louis E. Zych; children, Anne Mary of Albany, John of Syracuse,
Kathleen (William) Buchanan of Altamont and Kevin (Jessica) of Weston, CT; six
grandchildren, Meghan, Michael and Katherine Buchanan, and Andrew, Oliver and
Ellery Zych; her brother, William E. Brown of Cortland; and a large, loving,
extended family. Memorial Service: Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday
at St. Ann's Church, Manlius. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at
Newell-Fay Funeral Home, 8171 Cazenovia Rd. (Rte. 92), Manlius. Contributions:
