"Bill" Derocher Jr., 82, of Erie Village, East Syracuse, died at home. A native of Glens Falls, he graduated from Glens Falls High School. He retired as a boiler machinery engineer, having worked for various insurance companies. He wasa member of the Blue Goose Insurance Association and enjoyed big band music, golf, bowling, playing the harmonica and drums, and riding his Honda Helix. He served in the Navy aboard the USS Torrence during WWII and enjoyed many reunions with his shipmates. He was predeceased by his parents, and his daughter Susan died in 1980. Ellis, Helen Mary October 3, 2004 Mrs. Helen Mary Ellis, 71, of Gloversville, died Sunday at Nathan Littauer Hospital Extended Care Facility, following a brief illness. Born December 10, 1932 in Syracuse, she was the daughter of the late Bruno and Jenny Calabro Giordano. She was educated in Syracuse schools and a graduate of Syracuse High School. Mrs. Ellis was employed for about 40 years as a teller at the former Merchant's National Bank in Syracuse, retiring in 1985. The family subsequently moved to Pennsylvania before coming to Gloversville in 1990. Helen and her husband enjoyed many years of traveling in their retirement. They traveled with their "RV" through 48 states, throughout the years. An avid bingo enthusiast, Helen also loved cooking and gardening. She is survived by her husband, Paul Stanley Ellis, whom she married April 25, 1952; one daughter, Paula J. Gifford of Gloversville; two sons, James B. Ellis of Springfield, Oregon, and Timothy A. Ellis of Tucson, Arizona; four sisters, Frances Schneider, Antoinette Young, and Grace Beach all of Syracuse, and Jenny Hermann of Colorado; two brothers, Dominic Giordano and George Giordano, both of Syracuse. Helen is also survived by six grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Giordano. A former resident of 118 Legion Dr., Liverpool, Mr. Esterson was a life resident of Syracuse and had been employed at GE for over 35 years, having retired in 1985. Mr. Esterson was a ham radio operator, with call letters of W2YRL and was a member of Radio Amateurs of Greater Syracuse. He was also a veteran of WWII. He was predeceased by his wife Mary in 1997. Messing, Alice October 7, 2004 Alice Toft Messing, 83, formerly of East Syracuse, died Thursday at home after a brief illness. Born Alice Toft in the town of Tonawanda, she graduated from Heidelberg College. In 1952, she moved to the Syracuse area, where she lived until returning to the town of Tonawanda in 2002. Mrs. Messing worked for many years as an administrative assistant at Syracuse University. After that she worked for the State Department of Taxation and Finance, retiring in 1980. She was a member of University United Methodist Church in Syracuse and, through the church, hosted foreign visitors in her home. A member of the Sons of Norway, she was a patron of the arts who enjoyed classical music and opera, as well as knitting and singing in choirs. Her husband, Raymond P., died in 1993. The couple worked and played together side by side and enjoyed each other's company every step of the way. Born in Atlanta, GA, she resided in the Fayetteville area for many years. She was the owner of Thorne Sewing Machine Co. in East Syracuse. She was a founding member of GoodShepherd Lutheran Church in Fayetteville, a founding member of Syracuse Musical Theatre, a member of Oglethorpe College Alumni Assoc., very active in the Fayetteville-Manlius Meals on Wheels program and a Girl Scout leader in East Syracuse. She is survived by three sons: Frederick of Tully, Andrew of Connecticut and Charles of Salt Lake City; a daughter, Rachel d'Entremont of Aiken, SC; and a sister, Katie Blumer of South Carolina; four grandchildren: Ethan and Evan Wilson and Brian and Anna d'Entremont; five nieces and four nephews. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 7248 Highbridge Rd. (Rte. 92), Manlius. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
