Necker, Robert October 22, 2004 Robert Necker, of Columbus, NY, died Friday, October 22, 2004, his life mission completed six days short of his 67th birthday. He was born on October 28, 1937, in Weehawken, NJ, to Robert and Alma (Frank) Necker. Almost 40 years ago, death tapped Bob on the shoulder. He struggled back to life and his family with the command to join the army of artists in the sacred mission of planting the seeds of truth, grace and beauty. That first brush with death left him unable to meet the physical demands of his profession, journalism. He worked for newspapers in New Jersey and at the Herald Journal in Syracuse, NY. In his new career, he took up the more difficult requirements of his new life assignment, poetry. No one worked harder at his profession than Bob did - certainly not for so little material gain. However, that didn't really concern him. All he needed was his typewriter, a ream or two of copy paper and the support of those he loved. He wrote hundreds of poems, then reworked many and reworked them again, honing them down to succinct expressions that really count: Death Speaking, I do nothing in particular, and I do it very well.... Bob's work appeared in countless literary magazines, such as The Saturday Review, Abbey, American Poetry Review, Poettalk, Blue Unicorn, Stone Country and North Woods Journal. A chapbook is scheduled for publication within the next few months. Although his sphere was limited to a particular audience, his words continue to walk in the world. Once his poems are read, they resonated in the mind of the beholder, changing one's outlook imperceptibly, just as a song or a painting or any other work of art would. Now Bob is on a journey to the stars. He leaves behind his wife Barbara; his mother Alma, his brother and sister, Ron and Roberta; and his four-legged family: Midge, Bentley, Maisie, Willie, Ophelia and Petunia. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 26, at 3:30 p.m. at R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, Norwich. All are welcome. There will be no calling hours.
