Stanley, Manfred September 7, 2004 After 13 years of humor and courage living with Parkinson's Disease and a brave 9-month battle with cancer, Manfred "Manny" Stanley of Syracuse, died on September 7, 2004. Manny was a Syracuse University Professor Emeritus of Sociology.Born in Berlin, Germany on November 19, 1932, Manny came to the United States as a refugee from Nazi Germany When he was seven years old. His experience as a refugee was always present in his scholarship, teaching and writing. Manny tried to understand how societies can collapse into evil or support rich understandings of human dignity. He taught at Syracuse University for 31 years before retiring in 1998. His major work, The Technological Conscience: Survival and Dignity in an Age of Expertise, was an exploration of the challenges to human dignity raised by the idolization of technical expertise. At Syracuse University as a faculty member of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Manny founded and directed the Center for the Study of Citizenship. The Center provided a setting for faculty and students to explore the meanings and implications of democratic citizenship. Through the Center Manny directed and coordinated a multiyear study of civic associations and deliberative democracy in an upstate community that included the production of a documentary and televised forum on the nature of work in American society. Manny loved the drama and believed in the moral calling of being a professor. His twofold commitment to reasoned inquiry and passionate concern for public life were at the core of his graduate and undergraduate teaching and move throughout his scholarly writings. During his years at Syracuse as a much loved teacher, mentor, friend and colleague he never forgot that the life of the mind, though a serious calling, was also about friendship, love and humor. He believed that the institution he served, the university, was an essential part of democratic life. His writings on the role of the university in a democracy are eloquent and compelling. Surviving to tell his stories, honor his legacy and miss his smile are his wife and partner of 25 years, Mary Stanley; his sons, Marcus and Jason Stanley; his daughter-in-law, Njeri Thande; his sister-in-law, Louise Werner; his father, Alexander Intrator and his stepmother, Bella Intrator; his brother-in-law, Edward Breya and family; his brother, John Intrator and his family; his sister, Liz Intrator and family and many dear friends, colleagues and former students including Dr. Robert Daly, Rev.
