Gast, William Emery September 27, 2004 William Emery Gast, 90, of DeRuyter (Mariposa), New York, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, September 27, 2004. Emery was the son of the late John Orr and Leah Zybach Gast. He was born in Zybach, Texas, on September 23, 1914. His family came to this area by train in 1921 and settled in Mariposa. Emery married Marcia Baldwin on November 25, 1941. Together they operated a successful dairy farm for many years. Emery was industrious all his life. His enterprises included dairy, maple, firewood, logging, milk hauling, custom combining and trucking. He was an active dairy farmer until he and Marcia sold the farm in 1999 to their daughter Betty and her husband. He wintered in Arizona for the last three years with his son John. Together they traveled and explored the Southwest. Emery continued to be an active helper on the farm as the farm became "Apple Creek Golf Course". Until the last few weeks of his life, Emery enjoyed mowing the driving range and washing golf balls. Emery became a member of the South Otselic Methodist Church on August 19, 1928. He loved to hear the choir and especially enjoyed seeing children participate in the service. Emery and his brother Arthur started making maple syrup when they were young teenagers. Later this endeavor developed into Gast Bros. Maple Syrup. Many people have come to the sugar house over the years to watch the sugaring process and taste the warm golden syrup. The Gast brothers were members of the N.Y.S. Maple Producers Association and participated in the Marathon Maple Festival for several years. In the spring of 2004, Emery passed on his knowledge of boiling the sap to the next generation so that the sugaring will continue. Emery enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping. Emery was the Lincklean Town Justice for 32 years, from 1947 to 1977. He was also a lifelong member of the Madison County Grange. He served as Deputy Master.
