Moore, 79, of 303 East Main St., Elkland, PA, passed away Thursday afternoon, March 31, 2005, at Manor Care North in Williamsport, PA, with her family at her side. She died peacefully in her sleep after suffering from Alzheimer's disease and a brief illness. Mrs. Moore, the daughter of George B. and Cora B. Dorrance, was born in Elkland, PA, on December 24, 1925. Mary was a graduate of Elkland High School and Mansfield State Teachers College (now Mansfield University). A lifelong learner, Mary Moore earned 90 graduate credits beyond her bachelor's degree by attending night school and summer school classes at Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD; Elmira College, Elmira, NY; SUNY Cortland, Cortland, NY; Ithaca College and Cornell University, Ithaca, NY; and Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY. This was accomplished while working full time and raising her family. Mary's first job was as a waitress at one of the Hot Spot restaurants, the predecessors to the Marriott Hotel chain, in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Moore taught home economics and history in Harrison Valley, PA, for three years, and was a common sight riding her Whizzer motor bike 25 miles home to Elkland on weekends. After a time, she saved enough for a down payment on a 1949 Ford that was her prized possession and a much warmer ride home during the winter. Mary Moore also taught home economics in Addison, NY, for 31 years, retiring from there in 1985. She also served as advisor for the Future Homemakers of America club, the Student Council, and the senior class. Mrs. Moore belonged to the local Eastern Star chapter for more than 50 years, was a member of Elkland TOPS, and was a member of Parkhurst Memorial Presbyterian Church in Elkland. Mary wed Leland U. Moore of Elkland, PA, on February 12, 1949, in Harrison Valley, PA. The couple raised two children and spent many wonderful years of retirement together in Elkland and Haines City, FL, until Mary's husband Leland passed away in December 2004. Mary Moore is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia M. and Michael G. MacDonald, Jamesville, NY; granddaughters, Alexis C. MacDonald, Alexandria, VA, and Hillary E. MacDonald, Jamesville, NY; daughter-in-law, Lisa Moore Bock, Williamsport, PA; sister-in-law, Catherine Dorrance Drawdy, Elkland, PA; and several nieces and nephews. During WWII she was employed by Owen Dyneto; she also worked for Cramer Refractories, Judge Donald Whitney in Liverpool, and retired from the Duke Electric Co., where she worked for 28 years. Ethel was past president of the Saradaga Chapter of the American Business Women's Association, past Matron of Liverpool Chapter 219 OES, past Grand Officer of the Grand Chapter of the New York State OES, past Queen of Ilderim Temple #15 Daughters of the Nile, and past Supreme Officer of the Supreme Temple Daughters of the Nile. He was a tool and die maker by trade, and owned and operated a Christmas tree farm in Port Byron for many years. Bud remained active until his death and was an inspiration to everyone who knew him. Ross Sr., Ralph P. April 3, 2005 Ralph Parker Ross, Sr., 85, of Fayetteville, died Sunday morning at Crouse Hospital after a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Nassawadox, VA on July 10, 1919, and attended the University of Virginia before being called to duty with the U.S. Army in World War II. After leaving the service, Mr. Ross settled in Fayetteville where he lived for nearly 50 years. He founded Ross Empire State Brokers, Inc. - a confectionery manufacturer's representative firm - for which he worked until shortly before his death. He was a longtime member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Fayetteville. Mr. Ross enjoyed gardening, bridge, and relaxing near the ocean on his annual vacations. A voracious reader, he was fascinated by the nuances of the English language. At the least provocation, he would commence reading aloud from the unabridged dictionary as though it were a work of Shakespeare. Mr. Ross had a wide circle of friends from all walks of life. He also was immensely fond of cultivating acquaintances with unique and somewhat eccentric people and did so with great success. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Hertha; sons, Thomas of Chittenango, Ralph (Angela) of Richmond, VA; daughters, Marguerite of Baltimore, MD, and Kathryn (John) Wainwright of Raleigh, NC; seven granddaughters; one grandson, and one great-granddaughter. Simko, Wilma April 4, 2005 Wilma Simko, 91, of Palermo, NY, died on April 4, 2005, at her home in Palermo. Mrs. Simko was born in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and has resided in Palermo since 1955. She is the daughter of the late Joseph and Theresa M. Yanosko Krivus. She owned and operated the Drive Way Inn, Palermo, and also owned a mobile home park for over 50 years. Mrs. Simko was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Simko Sr. She is survived by three sisters, Helen Marinelli, Mary Ann Harrold and Francis Vidakovich from Greensburg, Pennsylvania; two sons, Joseph M. Simko and Robert E. Simko, both of Palermo, New York; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery in Fulton, on Thursday, April 7, 2005, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Peter A. Williams officiating. March 30, 2005 Aleta B. Terpening, 88, of Weedsport, died March 30, 2005. Survivors: son, Harold (Kathy) Terpening; grandchildren, Tammy Lipiska, Dennis Terpening; five great-grandchildren. April 4, 2005 Edward A. Zacholl, 72, of Syracuse, died peacefully early Monday morning at Community Hospital. Born on the north side of the city, "Big Ed" was an avid sportsman and enjoyed fishing, bowling and softball. He served in the Army during the Korean War. Ed married the love of his life, Diane McNamara, in 1963. His fast pitch softball exploits are legendary in the Tipperary Hill area, and he was a die-hard Yankee fan. He was a member of the Camillus Elks, and a former member of the Pastime Athletic Club and the Beer Drinkers Club of America. Ed retired from Niagara Mohawk in 1987. Above all, he was a wonderful husband, father and friend with a zest for life who relished conversation, family activities, and good times. He was a gentleman and a jovial soul who touched the lives of many. He is survived by his wife, Diane; his sons, Eddie (Laurie), Mike (Julie), and Danny; his sister, Betty Garvey; sister-in-law, Agnes Zacholl; grandchildren, Tyler and Jessie; and several nieces, nephews and friends. Services will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Edward J. Ryan & Son Funeral Home, and 10 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church. Burial will be private.
