Burress, Michael April 6, 2005 Michael Burress, 30, Ithaca, New York, died at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at his residence. His wife, brother and best friend were at his side. Michael was born in Southern California and raised by Susan and James Lee and John Burress. He attended Racecar Engineering School in Monterey in 1993. There he met his future wife and soul mate, Melissa, and the adventures began as they moved to New Orleans, back to Los Angeles, then to Syracuse before settling in Ithaca, NY, in 2000. Michael had an entrepreneurial spirit and started Lightspeed Motorsports in 1999, which took him across the United States to various racing circuits. Michael was known for his attention to detail, precision and professional attitude. However, he always made sure to give gratitude where thanks were due and managed to have lots of fun with the crew and clients. After being diagnosed with cancer in 2002, Michael continued to live his life to the fullest, utilizing his leadership skills to coordinate travels with friends to Spain, Italy, Prague and the California wine country. Friends and family will miss Michael's sense of character, strength, positive energy and pure spirit. He accepted people for who they were and was enriched as a result. Melissa will continue to honor Michael's motto to pursue your dreams, and both encourage all who knew and loved Michael to do the same. Michael lives on in our hearts as that spark to pursue learning, love and life. You will honor him to act on your dreams and to live each day to its fullest potential. As Michael always said, "Always try your best - it's all that family, friends and God can ask for." Hopkins, Joseph Tormey April 6, 2005 Joseph Tormey Hopkins, 87, of Niskayuna and St. Augustine, FL, died April 6 at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine. A native of Syracuse, Mr. Hopkins served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a captain in the paratroopers in the Pacific Theater. He also served 20 years in the Army Reserves, retiring as a major. He was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, Syracuse University and Syracuse University College of Law. He was an assistant attorney general of the state of New York and headed the Bureau of Claims and Litigation for several years before returning to private practice. Mr. Hopkins was a communicant of St. Helen's Church in Schenectady, where he served as lector, and of St. Anastasia in St. Augustine. O'Tier, 73, of Marcellus, left her earthly home on April 8, 2005, following a heroic battle with multiple myeloma. Born in Utica to Richard and Ruth (Seelye) Avery, she grew up in Syracuse and resided in Marcellus since 1965. She wasa 1950 graduate of Onondaga Valley Academy. Sue will assuredly be missed by her loving family and friends. She was employed by the New York Telephone Co., The Hartford Insurance Co. and retired after 31 years with the James P. Reagan Agency in Marcellus. She also enjoyed several years as a member of the Hancock Field Officers Wives Club. Survivors include her husband of 48 wonderful years, Harry; one son, Craig (Shirley) of Liverpool; granddaughters, Jennifer, Caitlyn and Allison; sister, Barbara (Donald) McNamara of Pittsburgh; cousin, Mrs. Charlotte Van Brunt of Denver; several nieces and nephews. A life resident of Syracuse, he was a state highway engineer for the New York State Dept. of Transportation, Division of Highways, retiring in 1984 after 40 years. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes and a Coast Guard veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita Merluzzi Osborne, in 1992. He played soccer for Bishop Ludden School and Baldwinsville Youth Soccer Assn. He also played basketball for Holy Family. He was a communicant of Holy Family Church.
