August 4, 2005 Audrey Virginia Arnold, 80, of Liverpool, died peacefully in the company of her family at University Hospital. A native of Syracuse, Audrey lived in Liverpool for over 50 years. Audrey was a successful jewelry craftsperson for over 30 years, was pastpresident of the Baldwinsville Art Guild and Syracuse Allied Arts and was a driving force behind the annual ArtMart in downtown Syracuse. Audrey balanced an independent and entrepreneurial spirit with a deep love and concern for her family and friends. If she even thought that a friend or family member might need her help, she was there to lend a hand. Audrey was predeceased by her husband, Roger F. Arnold, and her granddaughter, Paige Arnold. Survivors include her sons, Roger (Margo) of Tavernier, FL, and Chris (Ellen Yeomans); and daughter, Cathy VanBrocklin of Baldwinsville; grandchildren, Michael, Joshua and Alexandra Arnold, Erin and Nicole VanBrocklin, Jennifer (DeLand) Schouten, Eric and Sean DeLand; and great-grandson, Ryan Schouten. She was previously employed by the Grandparents Program for the Syracuse schools and also worked for Goldberg's Furniture. She assisted at the polls during elections. A native of Syracuse, he graduated from Nottingham High School and Syracuse University. He retired from the NY State Department of Transportation Real Estate. He was co-owner of DeWitt Sports. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta, the German-American Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Adirondack Mountain Club, 46's. He was an avid skier. He served in the Army during the Korean War. Born in Wrightsville, PA, Tom was a 1943 graduate of Dickerson College and Dickerson School of Law in Carlisle, PA. Tom served in WWII as a captain and a pilot for the Air Force. He was an avid sports enthusiast. Tom coached Little League baseball in Williamsport, PA. He was an employee of U.S. F&G Insurance Co. for 36 years. In his retirement years, Tom enjoyed antique collecting, fishing and golf along the St. Lawrence River from his family cottage in the Thousand Islands. Tom is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Mary Virginia Comp; two sons, Thomas G. (Christine) Heckel Jr. of Dedham, MA, and Alexander G. Norris-Plis Funeral Home Marcellus Published in the Syracuse Post Standard on 8/7/2005. Hickey, Dr. Eugene J. "Pat" August 3, 2005 Dr. "Pat" Eugene J. Hickey died this past Wednesday at his summer home in Lake Clear, NY. He was born November 5, 1916, in Brooklyn and was raised in the Saranac Lake Region of northern New York. He graduated from Saranac Lake High School and then attended St. Lawrence University, where he received his bachelor's degree. He received his dental degree from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. His advanced post-graduate degree in oral and maxillofacial surgery was obtained at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. He then enlisted in the Army Air Force and served in the China-Burma-India theater during World War II. He was discharged as a major in the Army Air Force Dental Corps. He started his oral surgery practice in the Wilson Building in downtown Syracuse in 1946 and eventually opened two satellite offices, one in North Syracuse and another in Fayetteville. During his career he served on the Community General Hospital Planning Board; was president of the Onondaga County Dental Society; a member of the Fifth District Dental Society; a member of the New York State Dental Society; and president of St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center 1974-1975. He was instrumental in the development of the Heart Surgery Center and General Dental Residency Program at St. Joseph's. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Ambulatory Anesthesia, a member of the American Society of Oral Surgeons, a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and a member of the Great Lakes Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He was very involved in the dental treatment of individuals and children with special needs and disabilities, both at St. Joseph's and in his private offices. He served on the Fabius-Pompey School Board for 10 years and was a member and chairman of the Pompey Planning Board. He also served on the boards of Continental Information Systems and Hamilton Digital Controls. He is the founding father of Toggenburg Ski and Board Center (circa 1953). In 1987, he was elected into the Ski Areas of NY Hall of Fame in recognition of services to the sport and the industry. He was one of the pioneers in the use of snowmaking in New York State. He once stood all alone in a difficult legal battle in a fight against the common practice, at the time, of charging royalties for the snowmaking process. As a result, all ski area operators have been spared a huge additional cost of operations. He established a program for deaf skiers 31 years ago, which also led to the present ARISE and Ski Program. Toggenburg has hosted the Special Olympics for two years. Surviving are his devoted wife of 59 years, Virginia "Ginny"; Jim and Kristen Hickey, Manlius; Dr. Kevin and Mary Hickey, Manlius; four grandchildren, Melissa, Daryn, Reilly and Ryan. He was a graduate of Syracuse University engineering program, with numerous honoraries, including Tau Beta Pi. He was a registered professional engineer and a member of the American Society of Heating and Refrigeration Engineers. Bev retired from General Electric and was a member of the Elfun Society. Through GE, Mr. Horsman was a consultant to Wright Field during World War II in the development of electronics for fighter aircraft. Robert had a great love for the outdoors and his community. He was active in the Westvale Optimists, Westvale Golf Course, Carpenter's Fish Hatchery, Boy Scout Pack 82, Mid-State Youth Hockey and Make Sure-Make Shore Boating Program. He attended Sidney Johnson Vocational Center, where he received an associate degree in architectural drafting and design. Mr. Jamison had the distinction of being the first professional African-American glazier in Syracuse. He was employed at Flower City Glass for many years, until his retirement in 2002. Jill was the daughter of Elizabeth and Vernon Lasher. Born September 22, 1920, in Chittenango, NY, she attended school in Chittenango and was a graduate of Central City Business Institute, which was established by her grandfather, Carroll Boardman. She and her husband, Rev. Keith R. Shinaman, were married on New Year's Eve 1942. They had five children: Keith McLean Shinaman of Hartford, CT; Linda Handville of Guntersville, AL; Alan (predeceased in 1991); Jack Shinaman of Flagstaff, AZ; and Jill Ann Shinaman of Syracuse; two sisters, Grace Atkinson and Jean Jones; brother, Robert Lasher; 12 grandchildren. Jill worked at Merchants Bank, where she met Keith. She was also employed by the New York Telephone Co. and the Marcellus School District. Jill was instrumental in establishing the Marcellus Presbyterian Day Care Center. She was an ardent leader among young people, having taught in the Marcellus Presbyterian Church School. She also led a Girl Scout troop and a Cub Scout pack. She was active in the League of Women Voters. She was an elder in Marcellus Presbyterian Church, president of the Women's Association, sang in the choir and was elected delegate to the Presbytery, Synod and General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, USA. She also was a strong supporter of human, animal and environmental rights. Her contributions to her family and community were many.
