Ayling, Robert William August 14, 2005 Mr. Robert William Ayling, 82, of Columbia, SC, husband of Margaret June Ingrahm Ayling, died Sunday evening at Duke University Medical Center. Mr. Ayling was born and raised in Syracuse, NY, where he was valedictorian of his class at Eastwood High School. He graduated from MIT before serving as a naval officer during WWII aboard the "USS Sante Fe". Mr Ayling was a design engineer, holding 21 US Patents, while working for Carrier Corporation, Westinghouse, and other major companies. He was an avid sailor on both Otisco Lake, NY and Lake Murray, SC. In addition to his wife, Mr. Ayling is survived by his sons, Charles W. Ayling of Roanoke, VA, Robert S. Ayling of Liberty, SC; daughter, Elizabeth A. Keith of Kunia, HI; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Donald C. Ayling of Liverpool, NY; and several nieces and nephews. She leaves behind her husband of 30 years, William; three sons, William, Ronald and Bruce; two stepchildren, Kevin and Karen; one sister, Lila; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Eilleen August 15, 2005 M. Eilleen Driscoll, 90, of Oswego, died Monday. Miss Driscoll was born in Ithaca, the daughter of the late Michael and Hannah (Mahoney) Driscoll. She was a graduate of Cornell University. After graduation, she began teaching at the Tully Central School. She later moved to Oswego, where she taught for many years at the Fitzhugh Park School, and the Oswego Middle School. She retired in 1974. She was a member of the NYS Retired Teachers Assn., the NYS Home Economics Teachers Assn., and was a former member of the Oswego Ladies Home Board of Directors. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church. She is survived by several cousins. She was especially close to her cousins, Thomas, Peggy, and Patricia McInerney of Ithaca, and their children and grandchildren. Eger, Marian Wetzel August 16, 2005 Marian Wetzel Eger, formerly of Barnes Avenue and just three weeks away from her 95th birthday died Tuesday at Iroquois Nursing Home. Mrs. Eger was a life resident of Syracuse, and a member of Onondaga Valley Presbyterian Church where she was a past president of the Women's Association. Marian was also a member of the Onondaga Guild, Women's Auxiliary of Van Duyn Home & Hospital, Order of the Eastern Star, Onaway, Medicians (formerly Ka-Na-Te-Nah Jrs), Auxiliary of Onondaga County Health Dept. and served on the Board of Directors of Camp Fire Girls. Worked at Letchworth Village for 13 years. Moved to Sandy Creek where she lived happily with her predeceased husband, George E. Hill, for 23 years. August 11, 2005 Neil A. O'Brien, 85, of North Myrtle Beach, SC, husband of Helen Gartland O'Brien, and a graduate of Syracuse University, died Thursday, August 11, 2005 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. Born April 21, 1920 in Syracuse, NY, he was the youngest of four sons of the late Jeremiah P. and Nora Foyne O'Brien. Neil made significant contributions to the Syracuse business community including his directorships on the boards of the Camillus Nursing Home, Credit Bureau of Syracuse and Central New York, and the Mortgage Banker Association. He held a number of senior management positions in the banking community as well, serving as President, First Federal Saving & Loan and Senior Vice President, New York Bank for Savings. During WWII, Neil served in the Army Air Corp. as a Captain with duties as a B-29 Bomber pilot and flight instructor. This experience qualified him for his membership in the exclusive Order of the Daedalians. Retired in North Myrtle Beach, Neil was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Myrtlewood Golf Club & Barefoot Golf Resort Club. Neil is survived by his wife, Helen; two sons, Kevin and Jerry; two daughters, Joanne and Maureen; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Born in Ripabottoni, Italy, she came to America as a bride in 1931, living in New Rochelle until 1942, when they moved to Syracuse. Her daughters, Antoinetta (Ann) Corp, Felice (James) Ferris and Evelyn (Evie) Komanecky survive her. She had nine grandchildren, Michael, Robert (Felicia), Steven and Thomas (Alexandra) Corp, Susan Dunham, Karen (Stephen) Sequin, and Sharon (James) Bellso, David and Jennifer Komanecky. She had 12 great-grandchildren, Lauren, Heather and Michael Corp, Andrew and Kevin Corp, Eric and Brendan Corp, Nicholas Dunham, Adam, Matt and Jake Sequin and Joseph Bellso. Two sisters, Angela Colucci and Giovannina DiIorio of Montreal and many nieces and nephews in Montreal and Toronto survive her. Her husband, Cosmo, died in 1992. Two sons-in-law, George Corp and James Komanecky, also predeceased her. An accomplished seamstress, she was employed by Elman's and retired from Learbury's. Maria was involved in many activities. She was a parishioner of St. Brigid & St. Joseph Church for 55 years. She was a member of the Altar Rosary Society and the Young at Heart luncheon group. She belonged to the Salina Town Hall Seniors and their bowling league. Maria often joined her daughters in volunteering. She worked at the Liverpool Athletic Booster Club concession stand during sporting events and volunteered at the Empire State Games. She helped raise funds for the restoration efforts of the Octagon House of Camillus. She assisted the North Syracuse Junior High School Builders Club, a student club that did volunteer work in the community. Throughout her life, Maria was interested in staying physically fit, belonging to various exercise clubs until the last years of her life She attended the school and athletic events of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed attending the Syracuse Symphony concerts with her daughter. Mary was born on the island of Kefalonia in Greece and moved to the United States over 40 years ago. Mary was an active member of St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church and the Daughters of Penelope. She was an integral part of several family businesses most notably Kefalonia Seafood and Archie's Place Restaurant on the S.U. hill where she was lovingly referred to as "Mama Archie". Mary enjoyed gardening and spending time with her four loving grandchildren. Born in Chicago, she had lived in Kendallville, IN for over 60 years before moving to Sacramento, CA where she lived until moving to The Oaks in 2002. Adele was loved by all who knew her because of her kindness and her ability to see the good in all people. She loved her family, bridge, golf, crossword puzzles, scrabble and lifelong learning. She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Abe, in 2002. She had celebrated her 97th birthday on June 11. She was the widow of Ludwig F. Schlecht, with whom she had shared more than 56 years of marriage. Mr. Schlecht died in 1988. She retired as the accountant for the Cerebral Palsy Clinic in Syracuse. After retirement, she tutored math and reading at John T. Roberts School in Syracuse. She was the daughter of the late John G. and Frances Zopfi Rieth. She graduated from Syracuse Central High School and attended University College (connected with Syracuse University). She was an active volunteer: President of the Porter School Mothers Club, Sunday School teacher and superintendent, etc. She was a volunteer at the Ware Presbyterian Nursing Home. Survivors: son, Ludwig F. Schlecht of Allentown, PA; daughter, Gretchen S. Hassenplug of Downingtown, PA; brother, William L. She was a homemaker and later a secretary in her late husband's business, Syracuse Realty Corp. She had been active in Wagon Wheel. She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Rus O. Sposato in 2004, and by her son Gerald F. Sposato in 1963. VerDow, 83, music lover, of Minoa, died Wednesday at Francis House. She was born in Fayetteville, the daughter of the late Hubert and Nellie Hale and graduated from Minoa High School in 1939. She retired from Agway in 1987 and also was a former employee of the Syracuse newspapers. Gert was well-known locally for entertaining with her singing, yodeling, and playing her Dobro. She was a former square dance caller and currently a line-dance instructor. She was a member of the Minoa United Methodist Church Choir, the Eastwood Seniors, and the Senior Theatre Troupe. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert Krusse in 1944, her second husband, Edwin VerDow in 1949; two sisters, Gladys Wilcox and Elcena Barnes; and a brother, Duard Hale. Gert is survived by her son, James A. (Mary) Krusse; two grandchildren, James Robert (Sheila) Krusse and Christine (Robert) Maroney; five great-grandchildren and several nieces. "Pattie" (Dineen) Wirkes, 85, of Brentwood Village Apartments, Liverpool, died Tuesday at the Francis House. Born in Massena, the daughter of the late Dennis Dineen and Alma Arnold Dineen. She moved to Syracuse as a young child liv-ing in this area most of her life before moving to Liverpool in 1983. She attended Central High School. Pattie retired in 1983 after 20 years as a Sales Representative with Sears and Roebuck Co. in Syracuse and in Fayetteville Mall. She loved Music, dancing, travel and casinos. She was predeceased by her sisters, Dorothy and Marian; and a brother, Bernard. Born in Syracuse, she was the daughter of the late Glenn R. "Bob" and Verda Moore and had resided in Brewerton for more than 30 years. Sandy was an Onondaga County Certified Day Care Provider and did so for 15 years until the late 1980's. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and volunteered with the Food Pantry in Brewerton. She was a member of the Disciples of Christ Church in Brewerton and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star chapter # 180 in Brewerton. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard "Porkchop" Wright, September 8, 2003 and her sister and brother, Jane Hilts and Bobby Fowler.
