Schoeck, Paul August 19, 2005 Paul Schoeck, 102, of Syracuse, passed away at his home on Friday. Paul may have been a one-of-his-kind for a neighborhood in Syracuse. He lived at 125 Schoeck Ave. in the Schoeck Tract in a house between James Street and Grant Boule-vard put up by Schoeck Builders in 1940. Paul was Schoeck Builders. People asked him about that. "They say to me, 'Well, if you live in the neighborhood you built, it must be all right,'" he said. He thinks it is. Yes, he built the neighborhood, this pioneer of ours, and helped build a few others, including parts of Winkworth, Broadview Heights, Bradford Hills, Lyncourt, Nedrow, Eastwood, Salt Springs and the Manchesters in Geddes. Paul lost track years ago of how many modest frames of wood, brick and stones he's raised around us. Hundreds, for sure. If he was asked about that, his standard answer was, "Just another one." I could build stories like those all afternoon. It's that kind of place, these 50 or so Cape Cods and bungalows of two to three bedrooms, fireplace and attached garage on Schoeck Avenue, Woodlawn Terrace, Mertens Avenue and the 600 block of Sedgwick Drive. In the Depression era of the 1930s, as a young carpenter from Austria - Paul Schoeck - had immigrated to our town in the 1920s and started working for contractors. Before long, he'd moved up to boss carpenter, and then, when the bottom dropped from home construction, he decided fate had whispered to him to start his own company. Most Schoeck homes have a standard design which the builder varied if the client convinced him the changes could work. Paul's notion in more than 60 years as a builder was to provide his clients with a decent, practical design the average working man could afford. He told me he backed off when he found himself finishing a half-million dollar home in Winkworth. "We have to cater to all people, but there are still more working-class buyers than people in upper brackets," he said, his voice holding the tone of the Alps, where he grew up. "Someone has to take care of the working people." He's retired, sort of, the last couple of years. His son Richard was a partner early on. After over 40 years, a plaque from current owners of the homes he built on and around Schoeck Ave. was given to him thanking him for his work. It said the following: "The residents acknowledge a debt of gratitude to Paul Schoeck for his excellent craftsmanship and foresight in having created a fine neighborhood. The fruits of his labor have enhanced the quality of life for many generations. Thank you, Mr. Schoeck, for a job well done." He was predeceased by his wife, Theresa. His son, Paul F. predeceased him in 2002. He is survived by his dear friend of many years, Roselyn Benz; one son, Richard K. of Bernhards Bay; one brother, Frederick of Syracuse; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
