February 4, 2005 Donald W. Alnutt, 55, of 123 Van Anden St., Auburn, passed away at his home on Friday, February 4, 2005, following an extended illness. Donald was born in Auburn on February 8, 1949; he was the son of the late Wilfred and Ruth Mae Thompson Alnutt. Mr. Alnutt was a former self-employed truck driver and also had been employed with Automatic Rolls and most recently with Mulcorr Container Co. of Auburn. He enjoyed being involved with youth baseball, having been a former president of the Auburn Sandlot League. Donald was a street and hot rod enthusiast and an owner of classic cars. He was a member of the Prison City Ramblers and the Antique Auto Club of America. Mr. Alnutt was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church. Donald is survived by his wife of 31 years, Pamela Salata Alnutt, and his two sons, Donald F. and Timothy T. Alnutt, all of Auburn; a sister, Bea (Rich) Conklin of PA; his two brothers, Wilfred (Marge) Alnutt Jr. of Auburn and Robert (Sharon) Alnutt of Port Byron. He is also suvived by an aunt, Velma Thompson of Sennett; his mother-in-law, Fannie Salata of IA; and sisters-in-law, Marianne (Frank) Tindall of MI, Kathy (Pat) Charles of Auburn and Patricia (Michael) Gullion, of Blue Grass, IA; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Donald was predeceased by a sister, Gloria Mills (2000) and her husband Earl Mills (2002). He will also be sadly missed by his pets, whom he adored--his two dogs, Max and Roxie, and his cat, Buzz. January 13, 2005 Dr. Stanley J. "Sandy" Bolanowski, 54, of Skaneateles, died unexpectedly on January 13, 2005. At the time of his death, he was on a research sabbatical at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. Dr. Bolanowski was a professor of bioengineering and neuroscience and a member of the Institute for Sensory Research at Syracuse University. Previous to Syracuse University, he was on the faculty of the Center for Brain Research, Department of Physiology and Center for Visual Science at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. A native of Utica, NY, Dr. Bolanowski became an internationally recognized scientist for his work on tactile sensation. He received many academic honors, including becoming a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America. Bolanowski is survived by his wife, Pauline Dimitry; stepchildren and their spouses, Paul and Eileen Smith of Nashville and Dena and Al Germano of Rochester, NY; three granddaughters: Emma, Sophia and Francesca; a brother, Thomas Bolanowski; and two nephews, Thomas II (Christine) Bolanowski and Daniel Bolanowski. Brunner, 84, of 109 Canfield Dr., died Saturday at Iroquois Nursing Home. Born in Buffalo, NY, she moved with her family to Westvale, where she resided since 1958. A graduate of Fosdick Masten High School, she was employedat Buffalo Savings Bank. Marion wed Robert J. Brunner in February 1945. She was a communicant of St. Charles Church, past president of the Altar Rosary Society and volunteered for 10 years as librarian at St. Charles School. She was voted St. Charles Parish Woman of the Year and was also a member of Women's Aglow. She was an active volunteer for many years, visiting many nursing homes and spent 16 years volunteering at St. Joseph's Hospital. Marion was loved and adored by her children, grandchildren and friends. She was predeceased by her true love, Robert J. Brunner. Bryndzia, Stefania February 3, 2005 Stefania Bryndzia, 81, of Geddes, died Thursday at University Hospital. She retired from Niagara Mohawk in 1987, where she worked in maintenance for 37 years. She was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, member of the Apostleship of Prayer and was named Mother of the Year 2002-2003. She was an active volunteer in the church kitchen and at many church functions. Her husband Alex died in 1993. Survivors: a son, Michael of Baldwinsville; a daughter and son-in-law, Nadia and Ron Tressler of Syracuse; a granddaughter and grandson, Katelin and Eric Tressler; and two sisters in Ukraine. January 4, 2005 Rick Casey, 11, of Liverpool, passed away Friday at home with his family and friends at his side. Born in Syracuse, Rick was a sixth-grader at Jamesville-Dewitt Middle School. He enjoyed baseball, soccer and basketball, having participated inthe OCC summer basketball camp. Rick was an avid snowmobile racer on the Rock Maple Racing Circuit. Ernest Delmonico Jr., 84, formerly of Syracuse, passed away at his home in Palm City, Florida, on January 28, 2005. Born in Syracuse, he was the son of Josephine Coughlin and Dr. J. Ernest Delmonico. He was a graduate of North HighSchool, Syracuse University and the Syracuse University College of Medicine. He served in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Navy during World War II. A pioneer in cardiac and thoracic surgery, Dr. Delmonico performed Syracuse's first open heart surgery on November 12, 1958, at St. Joseph's Hospital. Dr. Delmonico was a Fellow in cardiac and thoracic surgery at the Lahey Clinic in Boston and at the Bailey Thoracic Clinic at Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a founding member of the American Society of Thoracic Surgeons, a member of the American College of Chest Physicians, and the American Trudeau Society. Dr. Delmonico was a Clinical Professor of Surgery at the College of Medicine at Upstate Medical Center and a Diplomate of General Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Emergency Medicine and Trauma. Following his retirement from cardiac and thoracic surgery, Dr. Delmonico was an Emergency Room physician at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital for 10 years and a physician at Syracuse University's Student Health Center for seven years until his retirement and move to Florida in 1992. Dr. Delmonico was a member of the Onondaga County Medical Society, the New York State Medical Society, the American Medical Association, and Martin Downs Country Club in Palm City, Florida. He was a former member of Cavalry Club, the Syracuse Golf Bandits, Rotary Club of Syracuse, Syracuse University Club and Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Dr. Delmonico was predeceased by his infant son Stephen, granddaughter Michele Torrisi, and his siblings Margaret Bell, Elizabeth Piskor, Patrick Delmonico and Dean Delmonico. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Jane Roche; six children, Patricia (Les) Woodcock of Cazenovia, Mary (Paul) Torrisi of Skaneateles, Christine (Chuck) DeBergh of Sunrise, Florida, Jed (Barbara) Delmonico of Skaneateles, Jane (Bill) Cummings of Manlius, and Josie (Harry) O'Brien of Manlius; 20 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A daughter, Rev. Lynn Holmes of Scotland, predeceased him in 1974. John was a graduate of the Mt. Hermon School, Connecticut, Wesleyan University, and the University of Rochester School of Medicine. J.G. in the U.S. Navy, he returned to a fellowship in pathology at Strong Memorial Hospital before beginning his practice of general medicine in East Syracuse and DeWitt for 50 years. John was a 49-year member of the Rotary Club of DeWitt and a past president of the club; a Paul Harris Fellow; Fellow of the American Academy of General Practice; life member of the AMA, American Academy of Family Physicians, and American Legion Post 359; and a longtime member of the Cazenovia Golf Club. He was district supervisor for Personal Finance and Beneficial Finance until he retired.He organized and led a local big band orchestra called Ken Myers and the Merry Makers. After Vivianmarried former Pittsburgh Pirate's Coach John "Jack" Onslow, she traveled with him for six years during his baseball career as manager of the Chicago White Sox and as a scout for the Boston Red Sox. She was a communicant of St. Elizabeth's RC Church in Acton and a member of its Altar Rosary Society. She was also a member of the St. Jude League. After her husband's death in 1960, she worked at the Middlesex Dry Cleaners in Acton, MA, before moving to Liverpool in 2002. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by much of her family, including Frank and Stella Skrupa, Rose and Shirley Machol, Joseph Skrupa, Conrad and Josephine Skrupa, Genevieve and James Kearney Collins, and Regina and Walter Wituszynski. Smith, Lynda Dickinson January 31, 2005 Lynda Dickinson Smith, 86, of Chapel Hill, NC, died of pneumonia on January 31, 2005, at the Carol Woods retirement community in Chapel Hill, NC. She was a summer resident at the Smith Camp of West Lake Road, Cazenovia. Mrs. Smith was born in New York City and was a direct descendant of John Dickinson, signer of the U.S. Constitution. She graduated as valedictorian from the Nightingale-Bamford School. She lived in Washington, DC, in the mid-1940s, in Bethesda and Chevy Chase, MD, from 1950 to 1969, and in Jamesville, NY, until moving to Chapel Hill in 1979. Mrs. Smith volunteered in the League of Women Voters, the American Red Cross's Gray Lady hospital program, and Meals on Wheels, and was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Bethesda. She was a member of the Cazenovia Club and the Cazenovia Golf Club for many years. She had three children from her marriage to Richard Linkroum, which later ended in divorce. In 1955 she married Fred Burton Smith, the general counsel of the U.S. Treasury Department during the Johnson administration. He had five children and daughter Meredith, child number nine, was born after they married. Mr. Smith died in 1998 after 43 years of marriage. Survivors include nine children, Martha L. Jordan of Sun City West, AZ; Susan L. Crowley of Washington, DC; Lynda L. Copper of Cazenovia, NY; Meredith S. Scott of Mt. Pleasant, IA; Jeanne W. Smith of Lincoln, VA; Susan S. Tegner, Nils Roy February 3, 2005 Nils Roy Tegner, 71, of Cazenovia, died Thursday. Roy was born and raised in New York City. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School and received a B.C.E. from Cooper Union. He was past president of the NYC District LutherLeague and as such, in 1949, attended a conference at Cazenovia College, little realizing he would return 40 years later to retire in Cazenovia. Roy retired from Grumman Aerospace Corp. in 1990, where he was a vehicle design engineer. He spent most of his career working on space programs, including the lunar module and many satellites, and "Star Wars" designs. He helped develop the configuration of the current space shuttle. In the early 1960s, he worked on a study of how to repair satellites in orbit. After retirement, he co-founded the Grumman Upstate New York Retiree Club and served as its first president. He also spent eight years as director of the Cazenovia Duplicate Bridge group. Roy was an avid gardener, bird watcher and stamp collector. He was predeceased by his sister, Ruth Wetzel, and a niece, Tara. Roy is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Elsa "Fritzie"; two daughters, Lisa (Terry) Cochrane of Cazenovia and Karin (Bob) Berrian of Glenville, NY; four grandchildren: Ryan and Kyle Cochrane, and Peter and Erik Berrian; brother-in-law, Tony Wetzel; and one niece and nephew. She was 75. Rita was born in Syracuse in 1929, the daughter of Marie and Aidan Hickey. After high school, she continued her education at Syracuse General Hospital, where she received her nursing degree. In 1980, she graduated from Wilmington College, Boca Raton, FL, with a bachelor of science degree. She moved to Florida in 1959 and started nursing at Bethesda Memorial Hospital, where she worked for 35 years. She moved to Charlotte, NC, three years ago.
